Actually, little thought she may like to hear it, Edward made the right decision. The age of consent is sixteen in Washington state, but eighteen when the other person is in a position of authority. As Edward was her teacher and supervisor in her volunteer position, he would be considered to be a person of authority, She was seventeen, and did not yet have the legal right to make that decision. Edward should have explained himself better, though.

awwwwwwwwww! Bless poor Edward. Her being so young, I totally get why he thought it wouldn't work out, and that people would think he was a perv! Despite her youth, Bella seems to have her shit together. I've always been an "old soul" like her, too. My dad says I went from 4 to 40 :)

There’s something very icky, borderline pedo, about a 32 year old man having sexual feelings for a 17 year old child, yes she’s still a child in the eyes of the law. Why did you have to make her so young? It’s spoiled it for me sadly. I know I’m obviously in a minority, but I can’t help it. When I was that age an older guy paid attention to me and in wasn’t nice, it scared the hell out of me.

It just bugs me she had to do that in the first place... If she wants Edward and has... And is letting try with her. That shouldn't even be a problem to criss out..

Actually, I think Edward made the right decision about not pursuing a relationship with Bella the summer he met her. She was still only seventeen. While the age of consent in Washington State is only sixteen in most cases, there are a few exceptions to that rule that raise the age to eighteen. As she was a volunteer at the hospital he was working at, and could have been considered to be in a position of authority over her, that rule may come into effect. In any event, Charlie most certainly would have evoked it if he had disapproved of a relationship between them. Edward should have explained himself fully to Bella, though - both about how he wasn't ready, and his concerns about her being only seventeen while he was fifteen years older. She is now older, so this won't be a problem any longer for them.
