One quick question on the whole Crow mention this chapter, do you mean Ruby's Uncle Qrow, or Crow Hogan from the Yu-gi-Oh! franchise, as it is a little ambiguous as to which you're refering to.

Ultimate Black Ace chapter 7 . 2/5/2016
Sorry for not reviewing for all this time, but a large part of me wanted to wait until this chapter, where the partnerships would form. We already knew that Reiji, Yuya, Gongenzaka and Yuzu would form RYGY and it was easy to assume that Masumi, Hokuto, Yamba and Sawatari would form a team (presumably being the JNPR, secondary team, of the story). We did not know the specific partnerships up until this point.

First off, RYGY
Yuya and Gongenzaka, not much to say here. They already know one another, Yuya's the more energetic one while Gongenzaka keeps him grounded. This is a relationship that I imagine is going to be more static.
Yuzu and Reiji, on the other hand I find a lot more interesting. I believed that Reiji's partnership was in several ways the most important to the team, due to how few fleshed out dynamics he has in Arc V, even if he's not entirely the same character here due to a different upbringing.
Reiji and Yuya's relationship in Arc V is half adversarial (Yuya's side) and half utilization (Reiji's), which would still probably be present but very much toned down due to Reiji maintaining an aloof attitude and being pragmatic. This also would have stuck Gongenzaka and Yuzu together, when they haven't had much one on one interaction in canon. Any other partner would have had the other half of the team in an established dynamic with Yuya and his own partner with Reiji's half of the team being something with little basis.
So, I like this one in large part because this is honestly the partnership that I did not see coming. Yuzu and Gongenzaka are already friends, Yuya and Yuzu are already friends, so I expected either Yuya or Gongenzaka to be Reiji's partner to form the Reiji and Yuya dynamic I talked about earlier or to keep the Yuya/Yuzu friendship/romance/however you wish to interpret it that has had a lot of focus in the anime's narrative.
I also like this because Yuzu and Reiji are already keeping one another on their toes. Reiji was concerned about Yuzu because her heightened senses can penetrate his Semblance to an extent. Yuzu is creeped out by Reiji because she has trouble picking up on him, something that's especially unnerving since her Semblance is something that's always active, which is unusual, so the "void" that he leaves is especially noticeable. And since they're partners, Yuzu is going to have a harder time shying away from Reiji than she would have if they were just teammates.

Not much to say on Hokuto and Yaiba. Masumi and Sawatari however have a more interesting dynamic. Maybe you just make the team leaders have the interesting partnerships? ;)
Hokuto is rather arrogant as a primary defining attribute, but loyal to his friends. Yaiba is brash, but surprisingly kind and respectful in spite of this. Once again, static relationship. Yaiba tolerates Hokuto's attitude so they can be friends.
Masumi and Sawatari though... Masumi's the most dismissive of the three "extra deck specialists" with an ego that's focused on others more than Hokuto's is. Sawatari, while surprisingly competent after his character development, is an arrogant blowhard who folds when put under pressure (as he seems to be equivalent to when he first appeared and thus has yet to receive this development) and so is going to be a target of a good deal of scorn from her.

Now onto the chapter itself
Huh, after all the build up to the Emerald Forest, I was rather surprised to see that the characters are actually taking their exam in Forever Fall. It does however show that this is not taking place in the same RWBY that I'm familiar with. The world is the same, Ozpin and Glynda are the same (so presumably we may still see more RWBY characters), but the time and events are not. So, if nothing else, the change was great for that.

Yuzu's making a very good showing here in terms of her fighting ability, something that I never got too much of a sense of in her chapter for Tales of Remnant (review incoming for that one, by the way. Have not had much time before today, which is why this is coming after a few days and that one's coming after... months. I'm sorry). She doesn't have the brute force to get through an Ursa's plates, she's surrounded and... she still gets out okay. Parries, strikes at weak points and the like.

Tokens? So presumably not the chess pieces of canon. Makes sense, Cinder's symbol seems to be the black queen, so there's less need to make use of the same symbolism, since she's probably not the antagonist here.

Reiji's inner thoughts are intriguing. Mostly in that he was partially relieved to have Yuzu as a partner INSTEAD OF AN OPPONENT. That indicates a wariness of the world around him that I'm rather surprised to see. Everyone at Beacon is training to become a Huntsman or Huntress, the other students shouldn't be considered a threat. So to give him a somewhat hostile perspective is quite the surprise.

Haven't quite had a full look at Masumi's semblance yet, so I can't say much on it.

So, if Yuzu has trouble sensing Reiji, she seems to have trouble sensing the Grimm as well, albeit not as much since they don't quite teleport the way that he can.

Yaiba has a time based glyph semblance and Hokuto has energy (electricity?) channeling, it seems. Fitting. X-Sabers focus on speed and swarming with how Yaiba uses them, so the ability to speed and slow himself and the things around him fit thematically. Hokuto's energy being described as golden could invoke the "heavens" which are the basis of constellars.

So, given Yuzu soloing a group of Ursa as well as Yuya and Gongenzaka's save for Hokuto and Yaiba, the main protagonist team definitely seems to have a power advantage starting out. It certainly reflects Masumi's earlier musings on Signal's quality vs. LDS's quantity.

Just curious, are you planning to add in some mentions or appearances of more of the main RWBY characters? Not that you would absolutely need to with this awesome story, I just think it could add in a bit more detail and action, while reducing the need for repurposing any more Arc-V characters.
Ultimate Black Ace chapter 3 . 8/10/2015
All around a rather interesting story, and one that I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes. The writing is mostly good, with everything rather easy to keep track of. I did however notice a few spelling and grammar mistakes throughout, but nowhere near enough to destroy my reading experience.
The Semblances and weapons made for this story (I did look at the tumblr for this story) are mostly quite interesting and I look forward to seeing them in action. I say mostly because I don't really see Yuya's as all too great so far, but it's probably one easier to see the effects of in battle than to read how it works on tumblr. I also find it funny that Yuzu is the character who has a weapon most closely resembling both a Duel Disk and one that goes with the RWBY "it is also a gun" theme.
It's fairly evident that things have changed a lot for Yuya and Reiji. Yuya has it worse than in Arc-V canon in several respects, since Yoko seems to have replaced Yusho as his famous, vanished parent. Furthermore, Yusho doesn't seem to be able to fit Yuya into his life all too well, judging by their conversation. Reiji also seems much less certain and is significantly more shy than in canon, presumably due to not having the goal of stopping his father's plans. I look forward to seeing how they develop.
And it seems that Leo Corporations have filled the other half of the Dust Industry that the Schnee Corporation leaves open.
