Marcus S. Lazarus chapter 33 . 1/13/2019
An immediately engaging concept that gives us a fascinating twist on an intriguing series, to say the last.
I will concede that I haven’t been able to keep up with ‘The Blacklist’ as much as I would have liked (so many shows to watch, so comparatively little time to watch them in), but the idea of it intrigued me from the start, so putting this kind of twist on it wins you points for originality. There’s a fascinating balance between Hiccup’s natural compassion and Astrid’s cold practicality, with Hiccup actively avoiding death where Astrid has no problem killing people who might get in her way. With that said, your exploration of the campaign against Drago is handled rather well, as Astrid’s stealth skills allow Hiccup to take a more pro-active approach to dealing with an enemy rather than forced to react when the attack’s already underway, and you continue to explore the balance between Astrid’s existing skill and the issues Hiccup faces being this out of his element.
That said, while the central idea is good, on some level I wish you’d drawn out Hiccup and Astrid’s chances to interact with each other before they left to confront Drago. The preceding hunt for Dagur was well-handled, particularly with such complications as Hiccup being briefly captured and tortured and him agreeing with Astrid’s plans for Dagur over Stoick’s, but I felt that you missed an opportunity in that part of the storyline. While the readers obviously ‘benefit’ from seeing what Astrid is like in this version of events, it could have been interesting from the perspective of the characters to give Astrid a chance to see what HICCUP is like beyond the obvious tales she’s heard about him using dragons against Berk’s enemies, such as having to deal with Toothless running off to hunt that Whispering Death or the riders having to help Scauldy (situations that could have been subject to the ‘butterfly effect’ of Astrid’s new life causing them to be somewhere else until now, you know).
After all, even if they had met before the events of this storyline, one brief encounter as children isn’t enough to establish a full view of someone as a person. Astrid may have had faith in Hiccup from past experience, to say nothing of her agents’ research, but it might have been good to give her more evidence of who Hiccup was on a personal level via direct experience before they began their main mission.
Still, in the end, you created a very interesting new take on the series with definite long-term potential; I look forward to seeing what’s coming up for this new version of Hiccup and Astrid.

This was very interesting and entertaining to read, even with an OOC Hiccup and Astrid. Well done!
Aconite72 chapter 30 . 8/4/2018
Okay. Even though the story is stellar, there’s one thing that’s bugging me was that we never get to know what Astrid actually does as a criminal warlord, sword for hire? Drug trade? Weapon running? It’s like for the entirety of the story we only knew of her through the title. We never knew why that title was granted.
Aconite72 chapter 7 . 8/4/2018
I was so sick of how other writers shied away from killings. So refreshing with this story!
CleverAsEver chapter 33 . 7/10/2018
Oh my good god.

When I finished reading Embers and vowed to read Burning, I knew I’d be taken for a ride.

I didn’t think it’d be like this.

It’s incredible. The whole story, all 33 chapters. It’s absolutely incredible. I love it. I love it, I love it, I love it. Your characterization is on point - even behind the facade of a battle hardened criminal, I can still see the Astrid I know and love (and the Hiccup I know and love too, for that matter) through it. Your writing is so compelling, I didn’t put my phone down once even though it’s 3am and I desperately need sleep. I especially love how you’ve made it so realistic - let’s be honest, even though we all love a good fluff fic Astrid and Hiccup in this scenario wouldn’t be getting together and having smexytimes even by the end of the story. You’ve captured this slow burn beautifully and the evolution of their relationship and their characters so well I think I’m going to cry.

Well bloody done. You’ve knocked this one out of the park. Now to read the sequel.

Loved it! I'm glad you're not afraid of killing people :)
Diavo chapter 25 . 4/10/2017
Um, i think he would have killed that bastard if he had actually gotten any further. He would probably regret it later, but he'd still have done it.
ReverseHarem chapter 33 . 1/28/2017
Ahhhhh. This was so good! I loved both of their amazing personalities and the undercover thing was so cool. I was so mad tho when bang! he just friendzones her, lol. Hilarious, but slightly annoying so I'm very happy for a sequel! (I meant that in the best possible way, not criticizing:)
