I loved it from the start; that light appears in Alex’s eyes after Piper's rambling introduction (both parts easy to imagine), and that throughout all of this, Alex knows Piper completely.

If only Alex did have someone (Piper) to share all this with in canon. Instead of keeping it in forever. I hope that one day Alex does get to do that.

Love the basketball scene and conversation (and every other scene and conversation). That Alex just wants Piper to be happy.

The fact that Piper shows Larry all around her past but leaves out all the important parts is sad too. She’s so good at not being herself. "She's been hiding phone calls and the person on the other end of them for years."

Love the Java banter. You know what's coming when it’s mentioned it's been six years... and that Alex, alone, is going to prison. Bless that Alex has her greeting all planned out. Ha at the Nicky bit too.

Of course Piper reads up on articles on prison, and that she makes up a book club as an excuse, and realises her guilt should probably be stronger than it is. But that the soup kitchen lie does make her feel guilty, and that she thinks about Diane when she volunteers at one...

Of course Alex can instantly tell that something's wrong.

Woo. Love the ending.

I was happy when I saw the word count of the chapter. I spent a chunk of my first holiday day of the year reading this. And would have read all day if there was more.

I'd been working through my lunch hours, but not when I knew I had this to read!

By the time Piper gets on the plane she's already convincing herself of lies. And soon after not thinking about it. So canon, and so sad.

Oof at Alex's call. How non-affecting this can be for Piper, in comparison to Alex. Your Diane-related fics are always a bullet to the feels.

Just some of the memorable lines and parts: ‘Alex wilts against Piper, and it hits her that Alex found out her mother died three days ago and this is probably the first time she's been hugged.’ Stop it.

‘The minister says a prayer, but Piper just keeps murmuring her own into Alex's ear.’

‘This is such a terrible way to realize she still loves her.’

'Alex isn't going to remember this in the morning, and that's why she's able to say, "I miss you, too."'

Sometimes it's good for Alex to know someone else remembers her mother... Piper asking if Alex is safe because Diane used to... Piper /still/ being able to switch Alex out.
