The Grangers' age means they grew up with the 1960s, and so would have been more aware of feminism, and of pro-gay and lesbian politics in the UK. It's because lesbian and gay relationships were becoming more acceptable that Pride started in 1992, not in spite of it. There was a strong push back against Section 28 at the time. I'm really surprised that as middle class parents of a certain age, the Grangers don't have their minds made up either for or against the matter. Not surprised that they might not have spoken about it in front of Hermione, but I'd expect them to have discussed it themselves.

What you don't have here (assuming they're anti gay in a rather unthinking way) is the contempt about lesbians and gay men that goes with that idea. If they're pro gay, they should be worrying about the social prejudice their daughter will be facing. If they're anti gay, they should be thinking in terms of "everyone we know will say it's because Hermione just can't get a man", and that old favourite, that because there isn't a penis in the bed with them, "it's not like they can have real sex". You touch on "it's just a phase", but if they are really anti gay, they should be thinking "and of course Hermione is going through that phase, we sent her off to a school where she's isolated from the real world for 10 months, and she sleeps in a room with six other girls, no wonder she's a dyke..."

In the early 1990s, the debate about homosexuality had been going on in the UK ever since it was decriminalised in the 1960s. There were strong feelings both for and against, but there wasn't so much of the wishy-washy vague "but isn't it wrong?" feeling the Grangers show here.

If Emma Granger has "Our Bodies Our Selves"on her bookshelves, and various other similar titles, I'd be very surprised if there weren't a few issues of "Spare Rib" laying around. It was almost impossible to read about feminism without reading about lesbian politics as well, so Emma ought to have an opinion. I don't claim that she should have ended up for, rather than against; only that she would at some point in the last 15 years have looked at her daughter and wondered what she would do if her daughter was gay.

This is what comes of trying to keep the books in their time, rather than quietly updating the attitudes; it means paying a lot of attention to what attitudes were at that exact period - which isn't always easy...
