Really wish someone would tell Kilgharrah he contradict himself, if destiny is absolute and Mordred is destined to kill Arthur, then trying to kill Mordred is utterly meaningless, as destiny mean even if you succeed, Mordred will just be raised as an undead and kill Arthur, if Mordred can be killed and prevented from rising again, then Mordreds destiny wasn't set in stone, and if Mordreds destiny wasn't set in stone, then you killed an innocent, for what they might do in the future.

If the future is set in stone, then you might as well act as if foresight don't exist, as regardless of what you do, things will happen as it was written, and if you can't change anything, then there's no point to worrying.

If the future isn't set in stone, then you should treat prophecies as warnings, they tell you what might happen, so that you can try to avoid the bad and insure the good, which make killing people for what they do in the future a valid option yes, but far from the only valid option, and since it's only what they might do, unless they have already done something unforgivable, killing them make you an extremist, as there are other ways you might solve things.

So basically if the future is set in stone, Merlin shouldn't care about Mordred at all, as he can't do anything at all, and if the future isn't set in stone, then getting Mordred to catch a boat to another country and not return, is a just as valid option to dealing with him as murder.

Please update! Is this going to be a story where Magic is allowed in Camelot? Will Morgana return to the light? If the fake Mithian is related to Morgana being captured then maybe under the right circumstances when Morgana is freed especially if she is freed by Arthur who knows and accepts that she has magic and will not make the use of magic for good illegal in Camelot, then Morgana will become peaceful and work with Arthur, Gwen, the real Mithian, Aithusa, and Merlin for the good of Camelot and Albion. I think that if Merlin told Arthur about how he used magic to heal Gwen's father then that might help Arthur realize that magic can be used for good.

I'm sorry I'm so late in posting this after you updated, and I'm sorry I didn't post for the other previous chapters, but I sort of binge-read the rest of the chapters to get to this one. I loved, loved the letters. So heartbreakingly beautiful, and I agree with Arthur, that Gwaine's had a sharp bite to it. Nice to see Arthur is finally seeing Merlin in a different light, and seeing things that he so willfully looked over. It's sad it had to take Merlin's "death" for him to do it properly.

I've always liked the idea of Merlin receiving some actual training for his magic, and now that everyone thinks he's dead, he has time to do it. And Kilgharrah is again telling Merlin to do nothing. Hmm... we'll see how long Merlin can go before he does something. Unless he actually follows Kilgharrah's counsel for once. (I won't bet on it.)

Welcome back! I had despaired that this story would not be continued. Sigh. However, a new chapter and the adventure continues.
I love that Merlin is finally having formal instruction on magic. Awesome. Aithusa - bless her - was priceless in telling the young warlock that he was more a dragonlord now. Snicker.
Well done with the letters to Arthur. Brilliant. I agreed with every word Gwaine wrote. Yes Arthur, the truth does often hurt.
Merlins letter was rather heart breaking. Taking all the blame on his shoulders once more. I guess the question now is just what will Arthur do with this knowledge. We will see.

Hi!

For the most part, I really enjoyed this chapter. Leave it to Gawain to drive the point about Merlin through Arthur's thick skull relaying the message many of us at least were thinking all along. Your portrayals of Arthur, Gaius and Alator are what I would've envisioned them and, if I was writing this story, presented them in the tale. Merlin's resistance to Alator is also predictable. Patience is the key. Wish he'd wake up and realize that. (In many ways, this so reminds me of Clark Kent on Smallville when Jor-El wanted him to train and he wouldn't. I also see Luke Skywalker in Star Wars when Yoda tells him to have patience.)

One thing you might think about and this borrows from Star Wars directly. Perhaps, since Merlin has that guilt and needs to face it, he might face Morgana's and/or Nimue's ghosts directly? He might learn a few things.

Another thing-I'm eager to see where you take Mithian. Cautiously watching this.

Awww. That was such a sweet end to the chapter!

Good chapter. Oh, Guinevere. All I can say is 'too little too late.' It always made me sad, when I saw how Gwen becoming queen affected the friendship between her and Merlin. And it even started before that, I think. (In "Servant of Two Masters" when she was almost trying to persuade Arthur not to go look for Merlin... that's not what a friend does, Gwen, even if you're worried about Arthur.)

Although Gilli is not my favorite character, I am curious as to how that soldier found out about him. Hmmm...

And was that Aithusa who was talking to Mordred? That's definitely Aithusa. She said "Listen to your brain" to Merlin as well... I wonder what she was doing in the Valley of the Fallen Kings. All these questions need answering, so on to the next chapter! And I missed Mithian in this chapter. Hopefully she'll be in the next.
