The galaxy at large did not know of the Emperor's status as a Sith Lord. That was a critical component in Palpatine's conversion of the Republic into an Empire, that people would so it willingly. He was seen as a kind but strong old man who had been attacked by the Jedi. Were he to suddenly also have their powers or a weird and sinister name easily traceable back to the Sith of old, people would become suspicious of his persona. So, by extension, Luke does not know the Emperor is a Sith Lord until Return of the Jedi, nor does he or really anyone but a select few know his Sith persona Darth Sideous. People know he's evil, but not that he has powers.

Well in the Vader comics, he has his moments where his Anakin somewhat tempers him. Rare moments but still.

Despite of the fact that the last scene was very touching I can’t help but think of Darth Vader’s reaction if someone ever brought up to him the fact that he was crying. **internally cringes**
