One year on from the end of canon, Elsie and Charles' world has moved on. It's now Elsie who is retiring. The next day and the new year will begin the new phase in their lives together. Neither of them will be employed at the Abbey anymore. They will be just them, the Carsons. Their future will belong totally to them, and it's now their chance to decide what to make of it , together. A moment full of possibilities and challenges.
You've shown these two amply ready for this. They still love each other, think of each other, consider each other, enjoy their love life, being together, the warmth of their cosy home,sharing wine and Mrs Patmore's cooking. I like how you explain Elsie missing Charles' company and presence while she continued to work at the Abbey. I've often thought she would, too. Charles had ALWATS been there while she worked there, until the past year. It must have felt a strange hole everyday for her, even as she helped Mr Barrow and Miss Baxter move into their new roles. And the party. Yes, it should happen, and Charles would be pleased and proud to accompany her to it - maybe even in the Great Hall!
I loved how you used their canon banter in new and very appropriate ways, simultaneously showing how they enjoy this verbal , gentle sparring.
This was a gem. Thanks so much. Looking forward to some more Chelsie adventures in their retirement.

Thank you for sharing csota’s birthday gift with us. It’s an absolutely lovely bit of Chelsie New Year’s sweetness and everything I could hope for them in their post-series married life. I love how incredibly happy they are, how in love, how they feel like two halves of a whole soul.
