The plot is interesting and all but there is zero suspense throughout the entire thing. I don't even know what's wrong, I'm just not invested in anything that happens.

Yes, it might be true that the OC used them as such, but you present a different truth to the others: he was on watch, and did his duty protecting the group despiteminor story ~continuity~ issue} watch duty having never been mentioned.

Seriously, during the time of Ancient Rome, during times of war (well, when a legion was mobilized for war) any night sentry found sleeping on duty was executed by crucification .

Because the lives of everyone are at risk if they fail in their duty.

Also (mostly opinion), just make go full dragon. Or have the scales continue to progress like a cancer, slowly changing him. By making him half elf just seems rather forced (OC&Aura pairing... and hopefully nothing else, such as the cross dressing individual).
