I do feel Hermione freaked out a bit much over Harry killing Quirrelmort. I mean, this is the same person who almost got her killed by releasing a troll, and is also hosting/merged with the dark wizard who murdered and tortured countless people including Harry's parents, AND has made it pretty clear he is going to kill Harry and Hermione as well. That's not murder, that's justifiable homicide due to self-defense. It actually feels like a very clear-cut example of self-defense too.

That was unexpected, but hopefully a fun ongoing plot thread.

Fay is clearly the most competent first year, aside from Harry.

I've always imagined potions to be more like a magical ritual, where the mage making the potion is imbuing their own magic through the brewing process, to reshape the magic present in the ingredients. The problem when it being all ingredient-based, is that you could potentially automate the magic, which just seems wrong somehow, aside from how it would completely break the potterverse.

I lose some respect for Harry for being so uninterested in wand magic. Yes, it certainly has some limitations in comparison to his own magic, but it also lacks some limitations his own magic has. Wouldn't it be better to know both? Nobody ever complained about being able to do too much magic :P

Harry might be a little too suspicious. Yes, people might be out to get you, but properly recovering from injuries is also a good idea if people are out to get you.

Huh, so even his custom wand doesn't seem to do anything. That could be a problem in classes.

It didn't even occur to me that Harry's tattoo would block the Sorting Hat! That's actually pretty funny. The way Dumbledore kept trying to work Gryffindor-traits into his interview questions was hilarious.
