Sorry I had read this before and I forgot to review. It's terrible what she and probably many many other children went through. When kids have no one to look out for them, this scenario (or worse) is all too common. I think you were right not to pull any punches. What is remarkable is how well adjusted Anne is in canon and so her lashing out at Marilla is not surprising. I was pleased that Marilla apologised for intruding on Anne's very personal memories. And the scene where Anne is curled up in her arms was very sweet. It does give Marilla some insight into what Anne has endured before she came to live with them, which was only touched on briefly in the books.

Aw, I was thinking Marilla would just read a diary. How very different for her to truly experience what Anne dealt with. This was such a creative idea.

Seeing the scenes of Anne being treated this way was so hard to read. I don't mean that as a criticism to your writing- on the contrary, the fact that it was so hard to read is a testament to your descriptive writing and putting emotion into it.

"It seemed all these people knew was to hit and yell", ugh what a heart wrenching line! Poor little Anne.

I wondered if Anne would find out Marilla saw her diary. Well, I'm glad. At least it can open up conversation between them and allow Marilla to kind of show Anne more warmth than she ordinarily might.

I was super surprised when Anne slapped Marilla but then again all she learned from the adults around her was that hitting is the way to go.

The conversation between them legit made me cry. Like actual tears.
