Calling it now, it's either Merlot or Watts playing god with this world. And considering that they arrived through a gate, I would not be surprised if this alchemist is one of those mages in Atlas asking Ironwood for permission to experiment on living beings but was denied so they developed(or stole) a method to enter a world separate from theirs and did whatever they wanted here.
