I don't wanna do the insufferable Tolkiendil, but... Elrond and Elros didn't grow up with their parents. They grew up with Maedhros and Maglor, two of Fëanor's sons, they very distant relatives ;)
(... Huh, well, actually the Peredhil twins were hostages, but Maglor became fond of us with the time, and acted like an uncle.)
And I'm not totally sure about Middle-Earth geography, but I do know that the twins didn't grow up in Imladris, since it didn't exist at the time.
