This is a really awesome story... Why is Atem all deaded?

Its a very moving story but the only thing i dont get is why he's dying, but it doesnt matter, its one of the many things that makes this story truely great. :D

Very sad, with an almost slippery sense in the writing. I can't help but wonder if that was Bakura who Atemu killed though, and at the end, was that Yugi losing all his memories he'd ever had of Atemu as well as feeling him die?
