Reviews for The Inside Meaning of Words
YellinYee chapter 1 . 7/5/2013
This is amazingly written. Only River could narrate a story like this, and it is wonderful. I love the exploration of words as though by River, and how she sees the true meanings behind what is said for each of the passengers on board Serenity.

I just love River pov. You've managed a character study (of everyone) while showing River's.. Quirks? And her use of statistical like information. Like when she quotes the firfly modle in the series. I think you showed that pretty well.

Some parts confused me, and I disliked the part were you referred to her as prodigy. Not that the information is incorect, I just don't like it when people refer to characters using things like hair colours. I mean like saying "The young paladin walked across the road and though the sky was a florescent vomit like colour..."

Oh I've gone off in a random and confusing tangent haven't I?

This is fantastic, how everyone else has already said.

And it does go beautifully with Lirazel's story :)

I love how River allows authors to look into places not just exclusive to the canon, but that reflects into reality. And then to apply these reflections to characters I love? Thank you for this.

My favorite? The explanations of Zoe and Wash. "Together Zoe and Wash are too much even for a prodigy." :)

Brilliant. Just. Wow.
Carrie chapter 1 . 3/5/2009
This was well written and soo true. You have caught each character in the words they say and the words they mean. Keep up the good work~
RionaEire chapter 1 . 3/5/2009
Really well written as always, beautiful use of language, especially since that is what you are critiquing/examining here. I like your use of River as a person through which we can examine the other charactors and what they say and they don't say and what they mean and what energy their words exude. Poor Mal and Inara, I guess they have it the toughest with all that pride and stubborness and circumstances in their way. Inara really needs to set aside her stubborness because she doesn't know how lucky she is that Mal loves her. :) Your portrayal of how certain energies and relationships overwhelm River makes sense and your analogy of breathing under water made good sense and was well thought of. I also liked the repeat of the first couple of sentences at the end, effective way to close the story.

I haven't read Firefly for ages, and this is just... perfect, because it captures the characters and their nuances so well. Each of them, through River, and River herself through them. Wonderful work. :D
MsMojoRisin42 chapter 1 . 8/9/2008
This is wonderful. I love your River and how she sees (hears?) the crew. Very good! Hope you write more Firefly.
Eliche chapter 1 . 7/3/2007
very nice!
Annerb chapter 1 . 6/5/2007
Fantastically done. River's voice is hard to grasp, her pov rather elusive, but I think you have done a great job. Such lyricism and grace to the prose and thoughts just like her movements in the show. Really enjoyed this!
AgentRusco chapter 1 . 5/10/2007
This is a great one. You write River so very well. I love her observations of Wash.
Evelyn Granger chapter 1 . 3/29/2007
Beautiful. Prefectly captured every character. One of the greatest things bout Firefly is the subtext in everything, which is exactly what you've done. I loved it!
Lirazel chapter 1 . 2/10/2007
I inspired -this-? I feel so unworthy! But I'm truly humbled and so pleased that you've read it (I wasn't sure until now), because this is perfect.

Everything you write is as perfect as can be, but this one captures -all- of the crew perfectly, and that is no mean feat. Nearly every line gave me goosebumps, both reflecting what I already knew to be true of the characters and revealing hidden sides to them. And the way you make each section so Kaylee or Zoe or Book, but still make us realize that it's all from River's point of view is simply stunning.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for such a beautiful story. I feel truly blessed to have read it.
Sue-Parsons chapter 1 . 2/10/2007
I only just got to know this fandom a couple of weeks ago when my brother-in-law presented me with night after night of dvds he loved. This piece you have written is so rich and rife with excellent characterization it could be placed on the dvd cover to acquaint newbies such as myself with the people they were about to meet. You are right - River is an incredibly complex character underneath the injured mind; using her as a vehicle for nearly clinical observation of the people with whom she resides is genius.

Wonderful presentation.
