Aww, such a sweet story. You have captured the father-son relationship L and Watari share so well here. It's pretty obvious that Watari views L as a son/grandson and it's so sweet to see a fic that portrays their interactions when L was a child.

You did a great job showing the way the other kids view him. It's very possible that their jealousy for this child genius combined with his awkward social skills would make them all dislike him. That one kid who yelled at L is just so mean, but a good way to show what L has to go through on a daily basis from them. At least there was one child who stood up for L.

How sweet that Watari comforted L with strawberry shortcake. Maybe that's why he loves that specific dessert so much. Also good job with describing the comforting aura Watari has so that L can sense that it's him without even looking. Watari is so kind and it's sweet that he doesn't ask L what happened and instead waits for L to reveal it when/if he's ready. Seeing how nice Watari is to L it's no wonder they are still so close twenty years later.

You're right. You're absolutely right.

Just as you were feeling warm and fuzzy writing this, I was feeling the EXACT same thing while reading this. It's magical - reading your fic. I'm not a fan of childhood stories featuring my favorite characters from different fandoms, but this..this was truly a gem. You delved very nicely into the relationship L and Watari could have shared when they were younger, and you portrayed L as the vulnerable, yet boyish little genius child I knew he could have been as young. In a nutshell, you wrote this fic as it could have been inserted as a canon complementary material to the entire DN verse. It's THAT good.

You touched on the relationship details between my two favorite characters that were undermined in the verse, and you explored it through a simple scene of L-can't-sleep-and-he-needs-to-be-comforted-with-food very well. The way you wrote about his deviation from the rest of the kids in the orphanage, how his genius separated him and made him alone - it was all very philosophical, psychological, and it provided a very very suitable rationale to explain who he ultimately became as a perosnality when he got older.

Your words describing L as a child touched a spot in my heart, and I probably won't forget them for a long time to come. Poignant, definitely poignant. And realistic. And true. True to the characterizations of L and Watari, right down to the last intricate detail.
