Love this story! My personal opinion about why Naru is the way he is is his powers making him extremely awkward and unable to relax with anyone outside Eugene and Lin, both of them seeming to have connected more on a mental rather than physical level.
Mai connects with everyone on an empathetic level and her emerging powers only deepen those connections imho. Only having seen the anime, unfortunately, that is just my take on things.
The pairing of Lin and Mai seems rather popular and caught me off guard...but once seen, kinda difficult to unsee it *chuckles*...but I love your style and chapter 4 was plenty mature enough..
watching Naru forced into realizing what a self-involved fool was quite satisfying.
