There is a fine line between bashing for its own sake and writing in accordance to how one perceives how a character is. I think this particular part depends on the reader, though, whether a character is dragged through the mud or not. Personally, I couldn't care less about the character of Ron as I could not get my mind that he is a mere side character. Whether he is redeemed or not, in other works, is, more often than not, unimportant in the grand scheme of the story's plot.
