I will be brief in saying. This is the case when a story about 2 characters locked in the apartment just for 8 chapters contains the whole Universe.

Labyrinth fanfiction tends to be hit or miss for me.

This is a strange way to start off a review, and I partially blame myself because it's been a while since I reviewed a fic, regardless of fandom. I've lurked in the Labyrinth section for years now, and over the summer I combed through the best of the best in terms of what FF had to offer. Much to my surprise, I missed this one on my midsummer go-around, and when I decided to find some reading material tonight, the eve of Bowie's birthday, I figured I would give it a read.

I write this mainly to apologize for missing out on Sanctuary, and to say that this fanfic is very much a hit.

The characters are so real, and emotional, and yet fragile. There were moments when a single sentence turned the entire mood of a scene on its head, where a misspoken word created friction and sorrow. Jareth here is so strong, but yet vulnerable, and I was slightly worried that he'd fall into the common trope I see on here most often, where Jareth is fragile and yearning for death or for Sarah to rescue him. Kudos to you for not making him the damsel in distress, as well as making Sarah strong and powerful in her own right. My favorite thing (having also binged The Lady and the Knight this evening) is that in your writing, you don't spell everything out. There are some things that have happened on the periphery of the storyline, things that are danced around but never looked at fully, never outwardly acknowledged...and it's absolutely beautiful. It makes me feel like I've been thrown headfirst into an already-established world, aware of the boundaries much like Sarah is in this work.

I've mentioned this in another review, but certain Labyrinth fanfics give off a very strange vibe to me when I read them- I think I described it as similar to a grainy VHS tape pitched a bit too high, the kind you'd watch at 1am when all is still and quiet. Sanctuary brings out that same dark energy, that same feeling of unease and night despite the happy ending given. Usually this energy puts me on edge, but here it is almost enjoyable, and fits the mood you're trying to give to the tale. Things in your fic are dark, and your frantic tone reflects that.

(Also the smut is good. I could not find an appropriate place to put that compliment, so I'll slap it here into the aside and call it a day).

Sanctuary is a delight of a fic, with its dark and moody atmosphere complete with rounded, wonderfully flawed characters. It is a delight to find something so well-written that plays with the common tropes the fandom has to offer, but takes them in an entirely new direction. This is a fic I'm happy to leave a review for, and I have to congratulate you with this one. You've written a work that will stand as a pillar of the Labyrinth fandom. It is absolutely fabulous.

How lovely that was! I know this is from a long time ago, but you should really mark it complete. I was worried when I was reading that it was going to be a cliff hanger but it was so good I couldn't stop. You write romantic tension masterfully.

I think this is one of my favorite Labyrinth fanfiction out there. I had to read it again and I really wish there was a sequel! I love your writing, your humor and your characterization of Sarah and Jareth are wonderful! I'm going to wish really hard for a sequel.

I like how you weave magic, it's very enjoyable. And punch and pie night with games sounds awesome.

I like it how you never know here for sure which of the two of them has power over the other one. That's very clever.
