carlisle is a doctor and should have known that putting someone on surveilance and taking away their freedom only makes it ten times worse and makes them want to cut even more. he should also have put some sense into edward the first time they talked about it after he called it sick and disgusting and was furious. that is the absolute worst way to handle it as it only feeds that feeling of self hatred, of always screwing up and letting down everyone constantly. that only feeds into the depression even more and circles back around to self harm again. the most important thing is to remind them again and again that they are loved and that they do not deserve the pain they inflict on themselves. as someone who has suffered for years and years struggling with this, i know how much worse it gets from those reactions. i couldn't read past the third chapter because i know how much damage it would do to take away every sense of control like that. it's not something you can just fix by never letting them be alone again and it will not fix the problems that led to it in the first place. i'm sorry for the rant but that way of handling it actually felt painful to read
