One of my favorite depictions of East Asian religion and culture in ATLA.
The episode perfectly depicts the fluid and highly localized nature of spirituality and religious practice in East Asian cultures. Kyushu village literally worships Kyushu - there is no significant difference between how you would worship an ancestor, a notable ascended to godhood (a saint in European practice, but a literal god in East Asian), and a deity (many of which are ascended humans). Fads come and go, and temples add and remove statues. Every village has its own set of favorites.

The ending of Season 1 was indeed rather unevenly paced, and oddly plotted.
