Reviews for Can't Have It Both Ways
Guest chapter 3 . 7/13
I don't know why but 'Dan the dentist' made me laugh like hell. I can just imagine a superhero comic..."And here is our hero, Dan the Dentist! Here he comes, flying in with his instruments of destruction! Oh he's gonna give that guy a massive cavity! Ooh, that root canal has gotta hurt!" Stuff like that.
Jokes aside, nice story so far. I like the Dumbledore/Ron bashing. Keep it up!

This theme was used in many fics. But I believe that you were one of the first, if not the first to use it.
Some scenes made my teeth hurt because of the sweetness, but overall excellent done.
Thank you for writing such wonderful story.

I've been to celebration of Burn's birthday here in the states - it was AWESOME! Always a great time to party with the Scots and the Irish. Great choice for the party!

Wow, they went from a crush to an engagement in a few hrs. What a load of crap. Also, do you know how kids talk? Cause that's definitely not how kids talk. I like the idea of the story but this is just a bad start.

"The early ones are by far the best!"

Okay, my respect for you just jumped up even higher. (While later entries have very good writing, technically, and I did enjoy all of them, I do think the quality ended up dropping a little compared to earlier years.)
Detsella Morningdew chapter 12 . 5/24
First, I want to say that I've been really enjoying this story. It's the type of fanfiction that is primarily satisfaction-based, at things going right. While I would argue that it is technically inferior to other kinds that have a more developed story with conflicts less easily resolved, it is still quite enjoyable, and I know that many more people agree with that notion.

But if I were to put into words the one thing that would help make this fic even better, it would be that things need to be slightly more subtle.

This is hard to give exact examples for, but the clearest that I've seen is the handling of Ron. While I do believe that his actions are actually in character (despite actually liking him), he is not a major POV in the story. As such, when you directly state his intentions and not just his appearance to the other main characters, it seems more like you enjoy villifying him.

If it had been shown as an unfortunate lack of maturity coupled with a jealousy that had been seeping for long before he had attended Hogwarts, and the only thing we got was other characters interacting with him (rather than a full dedicated POV), it would have seemed more natural.

Remember, it can actually be more powerful a statement to imply something heavily rather than state it outright. Even his bad intentions.

Still, it certainly doesn't ruin the experience for me. Thank you for writing this.
Detsella Morningdew chapter 1 . 5/24
I do think that the start is a little rushed, though the content is good.

I also think that both Harry and Hermione would have a bit more of a serious reaction to Ron's hand blowing up, even if he was being an arse. Just his wand? That wouldn't really be that big a thing, especially since he can technically get another one.

But neither of them are the war veterans they become later in the series. They have not seen that much gore. Especially not from a former friend.

I'm still very interested in this story, but I figured I would point out the flaws. If you do want Harry and Hermione to be more callous about Ron's injury, you need to set it up more. (I do understand that Madam Pomfrey can likely fix it. But gore is gore.)
