You know what I love about you as a writer? Your stories are intelligent. They're clever on so many levels. You think things through and are meticulous in your whole writing process, and it comes across in your stories. You know what you're talking about. You take character risks, you research what you're doing - you're not afraid to challenge stereotypes and you never, ever feel the need to dumb down your stories; you have no idea how much I admire you for that. It's a trait so often neglected on here, believe me.

Secondly - I have no idea why you insist on making me re-evaluate my opinions on characters, but I thank you whole-heartedly for doing so. I loathe Athena as a character - I have no sympathy for her and would quite like her to vamoosh to a faraway land. But in this? I felt everything from sympathy to empathy and back again. You kept the essentials of her character from the book - rational, complex, her relationships with the other Athenians - and used them as a foundation to build a wonderful character with so much depth, emotionally, regardless of her own concerns for feelings. Which, I can assure you, is rarely done, and indeed rarely done well.

I also love that the storylines from the books run quietly and unassumingly throughout the chapters; never overwhelming them, because you keep the characters at the forefront which is what makes this such an engaging read.

You know that feeling you get when you're reading a story and you know that's in a good'un, from the very beginning? I felt that, right from the start. You should be so proud of this. It's mesmerizing.
