Reviews for The Torches of Other Worlds
CallSignStarbuck5150 chapter 80 . 9/23/2016
I am heartbroken that I have reached the end of this story. I have read it incessantly in the last couple of weeks, maybe a little more, and it has been my obsession. I have woke in the middle of the night with the need to reach for my phone and continue reading even though I knew I had work the next day. It has plagued my dreams in the worst and best ways. It has stirred in me my own desires to write. With 80 chapters each, I allowed myself to believe I would never have to endure its end, and yet here I am. Had I been less zealous and obsessed with my reading, I could have perhaps stretched out the pleasure of your words, but I was not so disciplined. I have always been self-indulgent in my reading habits. I wish there was a part 3. I wish there was a part 4 and 5. I wish it would go on forever. You wrote this so well that it easily could. Except as a writer I know that it would only be "easy" as the reader and not as the author. I wish I knew what happens later on. I would love to read of the wedding between Kara and Lee. I would love to read what becomes of the coalition government on Neried. I'd love to read of Brae mapping the stars on the way to earth. I've always thought that particular prophecy was quite beautiful. Maybe one day you'll gift your fans with more of this story, but no one will fault you if you don't. You've done your due diligence. I'll never forget this tale. Thank you for sharing it with the world of fanfiction fans. Rarely are we presented with a work of fanfiction worthy of a new york times best seller accolade. Frankly, I'd read your grocery lists.

I COULD NOT stop laughing when the centurion wouldn't let Leoben enter the park! hahaha! The toaster took orders from a human! That's amazing.

Where did you find the poems by Kataris? Or did you write them yourself? They're brilliant.

/You get my Better Than Canon Award for BSG/

I just came across this and I am so glad you posted it, it and the first story are literally the best fan fics I have read all year. You've kept the characters mostly true to canon while cutting out the boring and gratuituous stuff and actually making me cheer on Laura rather than skipping through her sections since she was my least favorite in the series.

The ending feels realistic, things aren't perfect for anyone and the future is still “out there” but there is a deep sense of satisfaction as a reader that the big questions have been resolved and appropriate parties rewarded or punished as need be. I am mostly not a shipper but thank you for giving Lee and Kara the chance they never got in their botched up series relationship.

To echo another reviewer I love you for finishing this wonderful and thought-provoking saga.

Over the last month I read Siren’s Kiss and this one. I don’t normally read fandoms where the book or novel or television show had a dark or sad ending but a friend emailed me the link and said I should read it even though I never watched the television series. Your story at times haunted me, infuriated me and kept me thinking (and reading) because the themes are so universal and topical. In the end, perhaps those emotions are more important than the usual "Great story - I enjoyed it." I really really hope you keep writing.

Just finished it and have to say Great Story was intense and incredibly good. I honestly think it is one of the best BSG stories that I have ever read. I don’t normally like kids in my adventure and-or romance stories, but I got to admit this one would have been much less without them. You hit that sweet spot of just enough but not too much. I think that’s what my dad meant when he told me one day I’d have a kid of my own and understand. Haha For everyone else in the story you handle all the ingredients very well: lots of action, love and even some humour...

This is the longest fic I've ever read, and definitely one of the best. I love how you paced the plot and the action, as well as showing Kara and Lee growing up without dragging on or rushing through any part. You've clearly put a lot of work into this, and I want to thank you for finishing it! My biggest pet peeve when reading fan fic is authors who take everybody out of character. As soon as that happens I quit reading. My next biggest peeve is an abandoned fic. Too many BSG fics never got finished. I love you for giving us a great finished fic.
Fight-the-Future chapter 80 . 8/6/2015
Love, love, love this final chapter! It was perfect as an ending that could also serve as a beginning. I hope you will continue the story in the future. There are so many places it could go and so many possible futures for the characters especially if you pick up with the children as they grow up and begin the search for Earth.

When I think of BSG this is what I will remember. This and Siren’s Kiss are 2 of my all time favorite stories ever. I will read both of them again soon.

I am a huge BSG fan and don’t know how I missed your stories when they were first published but I did. I have just spent a couple of weeks reading Siren’s Kiss and this one in my spare time. They are truly epic stories of a conflict that is told not through the repeated battles of two enemies but by the humans and cylons who fight them and how their lives are impacted just like the television series tried to do. When you did write about the battles though I felt like I was watching a war movie. Verbal CGI. :-)

Both stories had the potential to devolve into mushy romance but never did which is part of what makes them so readable. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed reading anything as much as I enjoyed the part about Kara’s quest at the beginning of this story to find and rescue her father and her adventures along the way plus the way you tied it to the adventure story she had read as a young teenager.

I applaud you for keeping the points of view limited and letting us get to know the many other players through the eyes of the main ones. We get flawed but real characters both human and cylon whose lives are played out against the much broader background of their struggle to survive and continue their species. I’m sure I’ll reread both these stories when I need a BSG fix.

This is very late for me to say it but I enjoyed thoroughly both your long stories. They were exciting, thrilling, and written so well. I love your Kara, especially the dynamic you created between her and the men in her life—Lee, Karl, Hunter, Noel, Dwight and especially her 2 fathers (bio and step).

Thank you for such an awesome AU read.

I’ve been racking my brain to try to find words to use in my review for this story and the one before it. So here goes: Extremely well-written, imaginative, true to character, well-plotted and paced, and memorable, so memorable. The characters just came alive for me. They weren’t perfect people but who of us is? They were real and not the charicatures that often populate fan fic. You made me care about their fates. You made me laugh and cry but most of all you made me fall in love with Kara and Lee all over again.

I know I will revisit both stores in the future. So say we all. :D

Oh man, what a great story. I have spent the last month reading both your epics as time permitted. Paced myself because I didn’t want to devour too much at a time and wanted to think about the action and different but similar roads everyone took as opposed to the series. You have taken characters that mostly lost their way in the series and told a tale of how I wish their lives had gone especially Kara and Lee. A wonderful entertaining story. I hope you write more.
Guest chapter 80 . 1/10/2015
Okay, I have to say right now, officially, that this story and Sirens Kiss are some of the BEST fan fic I've ever read! The descriptions, the attention to detail, the understanding of the characters - it's so amazingly descriptive that it all played like a movie in my mind! Thank you so much for writing this, and for erasing the horrible Lee/Kara ending we got in the series – Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Guest chapter 80 . 9/11/2014
Let me say that as good as Siren’s Kiss was, IMO this story is better in that it doesn’t focus so much on Kara and Lee but expands to cover more of the conflict between the humans and their cylon children.

Everything was portrayed realistically and we see that there are no pure heroes or pure villains. Nobody sails through the story pain free or mistake free. We get a sense of how everyone was affected by the past and we watch them grow and change which includes some of the cylons. We see good and honorable men and women make bad choices and suffer the consequences yet we see the underlying theme of redemption and forgiveness and of course hope for a better future in the image of all the children playing together at the end.

This is epic storytelling that doesn’t focus exclusively on war and battles but on the people who fight those wars and how it affects their lives. It doesn’t matter if they are on the front lines of the fighting or back on Caprica dealing with the political fallout from the losses. There was definitely the potential for the story to bog down or meander off into a dozen insignificant and distracting subplots which I’ve seen happen too many times in fics of this scale, but you controlled the povs and kept the plot moving along.

Humans and cylons both died but you didn’t gratuitously kill anyone just for the shock value. You also resisted the temptation to get preachy about religion and politics and other hot button issues and instead left it to the reader to interpret those major forces on the characters and the story. Good job on all fronts. I’ve added you to my favorite authors and this to my favorite stories. I’m sure I’ll revisit both stories in the future. Now I’m going to quit before this review gets longer than your epic. :)
