That ending...

..G-goddamn. That was.. wow.

I love love love the structure of the story and the use of FemC's own soundtrack that fits each little..chapter of Satashi's life. Genius. Shinjiro himself and their relationship, is written very well too. She's not overly childish and irritating (unlike, er, most..FemC's 'round this site that like to go a little overboard..MMMyeah) and he's not overly serious and moody.

I'm light years late in reviewing this. I can't say that I neglected to review because I didn't know about the story, because I did. And I can't say I was reluctant to review because I don't care for the pairing, because I do. And I can't even claim that I read it once and forgot all about it, because I didn't. So the reason I haven't reviewed until now is because I suck. There. I've said it.

Anyway! Structure-wise, this is a kinda risky story. It's very long and it doesn't have an obvious overarcing plot. Somehow, you took both of these things and used them to your advantage.

Plot-wise, I like how tightly (and thoroughly) you characterized Shinjiro - even though you don't dive into some overlong explanation of his history with Satashi and how he feels and blah blah blah, the reader can still pick up the important details. In my opinion, that's a better characterization than an info dump and truer to Shinjiro's personality. This carries all throughout the story as we see subtle touches of his different moods - anger, pain, humor, affection, resolve.

The other thing I like about the plot is the dual views it gives the reader - past and present. It lets us see Satashi, rounding out and strengthening her character. Also, showing so many different moment allows for a lot of room to explore the Shinjiro/Satashi dynamic. The quality of MShe's relationship with Shinjiro really depends on who's writing it, and I love this interpretation - her breeziness is fun without being annoying or too childish and is an interesting contrast to his seriousness.

As for story-length, I feel the high wordcount is justified: it doesn't feel too long. I think that's helped by the structure - though it's a oneshot, it's also a series of smaller episodes, framed by Shinjiro listening to her mp3 player. That's a really nice framing device. The player has to be central to Satashi's personality, and I love how you used the game's actual music not only to reflect on how Satashi lived her life, but also how she died.

In general, there are some great details - the butterfly watch for instance - and the Reaper fight was some beautifully written action.

Crit:

Not much to complain about. I saw some occasional typos. The only thing that bothered me - and that only because it momentarily slowed down the reading - was the Japanese lyrics followed by their translations. Given that Shinjiro's Japanese and would automatically translate, you could probably just write out the translations and leave it at that. I don't think the Japanese lyrics have to be there.

I really wish that the persona 3 fandom was bigger, so that I could read more cute stories like this one, haha. I really liked the little flashbacks, especially the "I'm not a princess" one XDDD
