Very sad, but the realities of Nick's life really do rather rule out the usual Dad scenario if he does not have a wife, lover, partner, whatever; to take up the real work of raising an infant. Very well written story!

This situation Nick is in being the exception here, the main reason guys think it's so beautiful (childbirth, that is) is because they have all the fun while their girlfriend/wives do all the work. Good story though.
