Ah, his plans never quite work out, do they? On the other hand, he knew those tapes will end up with the crime lab/police. Not with Sara specifically, as she can't do everything. And he could've worded it differently, mention some other places, tell about the worlds and people he saved. But no, he blamed himself and practically shouted "I am a mass murderer".
People get afraid of statements like that. Especially if they don't know why

And the tidbit that he innocent of the crime he was jailed for? Well, it's one thing to find out that the man you put behind bars was innocent, it's quite another to find out that he was also tortured and killed
