I like this. I think I read this years ago and happened across it again today, and I like it still. It's a very good short story, encapsulating in just a thousand words the tension of years of character development coming to a head. Thanks for sharing your writing. It's been years, I hope you've continued to practice and enjoy writing.

Wow. Just... wow. One chapter and I'm already hooked! (To be honest, I came here a bit biased bcause I'd just finished reading your other AtLA fic "The Dragon King's Temple" -and man if that isn't a good analogy!- but you really blew my mind with this one.) I feel that the other, more in-reserve parts of the Fire Nation army don't get enough appreciation most of the time, like how the Yu Yan showed up for all of one episode and as good as vanished for the rest of the show. And even the Fire Nation has to have had healing units, right? So why don't we ever get to hear about them? Personally, I think this would've been a great idea for showing the pre-Zuko Gaang about how even the Fire Nation cared about each other. Would've been great plot development too... *sigh*. Anyways, I absolutely love this story already. In my mind, there just aren't enough fics out there about if Zuko's punishment had been even the slightest bit different. I mean, the what-ifs of Ozai's decision that day are positively endless! And yeah, if Zuko had ended up in a place where all his heroic tendencies were encouraged rather than disapproved, he really would have progressed much farther and much faster as a character even before interacting with Team Avatar. I hope you find the time to continue this story one day; best of luck! ;-)
