Hmmm, you don't mention it here but the first thing to look for is the marriage certificate between Martha and 'Nick Hartmann' as well as divorce records. I'd also double check Rick's birth record to see if it listed a father. (though I'd assume it didn't or the series would have mentioned it?) Those would all be public record and the letter specifically mentioned that he married Martha so it feels like a bit of a missed avenue of investigation.

Just like other things Beckett doesn't show any kind of guilt and responsibility for her actions in ch. 1. It's like she has all time access pass of screwing up things and don't even sincerely apologise for. And just like all the hypocrite writers like Canon you don't give a damn that why Castle followed her to the swings. He had no business of following her to the swings and here he is without even his fault he is following her and making things clear for Beckett again not Beckett owing up to her actions but showing pride, hypocracy, attitude. She doesn't deserve someone dedicated like Castle. Castle deserve much more from her.

I'm not sure how I missed it, but I'd never seen this story before. I loved the idea of the gift of the bricks. Especially the cobblestones and the note about using the bricks as a foundation.
