Reviews for Forward Unto Dawn
Guest chapter 19 . 8/3
Sounded like an interesting plot, especially with it turning out to be the future, all the betrayals, and Madara's involvement, also liked the idea behind Shido's death, however the open ending puts me off.

I dislike crossovers that are continuous, with one character moving from one crossover to another, but it's the same character as before. To me, these are no different than stories where Naruto goes to multiple fandoms, picks up a harem from different universes, a million different powers and weapons from these universes, and then returns to Konoha to wreak havoc on his enemies.

I also don't like the idea of an emotionless Naruto for a number of reasons, for starters, it's boring. One of the key components to a successful story is character development, an emotionless character can't develop, someone who has apathy due to trauma, can develop, but someone whom has dedicated their life to being a mindless tool, cannot have development. A prime example is Setsuna F Seiei from Gundam 00, yes, he seemed completely emotionless at the beginning, however from the very beginning he was a driven character, driven to find 'the twistedness' in the world, and even then, he did show emotions, such as his regrets over killing his parents, his resentment towards Kazadistan for invading Krugis, and his absolute rage towards Ali al-Saachez. Your Naruto almost seems like he doesn't give a flying fuck and is only helping because it's what he's trained to do.

There are also the reasons behind him being emotionless which are commonly used and make no sense. War being the most common, yes war is bad, war changes you, but war doesn't make you emotionless, it can make you hateful, it can make you spiteful, or it can even make you philosophical, but it doesn't make you lose your capability to feel emotion. In addition, the Fourth Ninja War was NOT that big of a deal, seriously OUR WARS have been far worse, don't believe me, look up the Manila Massacre and Nanjing Massacre of World War II, THOROUGHLY read up on the Holocaust and what our soldiers witnessed. They didn't walk onto the scene, look at the atrocities and go "oh well, more dead people", they took those atrocities and used it to push themselves further in the war, yeah they came out changed, but they didn't lose their regards for human life, and trust me, those instances make a fictitious war look like a joke, those people were SLAUGHTERED in droves, in the MILLIONS, and our grandfathers and great-grandfathers had to look up on that shit, bury the dead, and prepare to engage the enemy. It's a soldier's ability to cling to their humanity despite seeing the worst side of it that makes them who they are, if Naruto witnessed a few comrades die in battle, then shut himself off from society, then he's a piss-poor excuse of a soldier.

ANBU is another reason commonly used. I'm only going to say this once.

EMOTIONLESS ANBU TRAINING, INCLUDING ROOT, IS SOMETHING MADE UP BY THE FANFIC COMMUNITY

NOWHERE in canon does it say that ANBU, including ROOT, are abolished of their emotions, the ONLY two members shown to be emotionless are Fu and Torune. Team Ro, which consisted of Kakashi, Yugao, Itachi, and Yamato were all actually ROOT operatives, and it was hinted that Shisui was one as well, NONE of them are emotionless, the closest was Yamato, but that's because he's a literal test-tube made supersoldier, but even HE found emotion and came to admire Kakashi with almost religious reverence. Sai is another story because Sai was apparently raised in ROOT since early childhood and even then, Sai isn't emotionless, he's broken, he's not someone who doesn't give a damn, he's someone who doesn't know HOW to express himself, and even then, we've been given plenty of glimpses into Sai's emotions, his sadness over the death of his brother and his anger at Danzo for causing it, and later, in Boruto, his determination to prove his loyalty to Konoha by rooting out and destroying everything remaining of Danzo's legacy. So really, the idea that being in ANBU or ROOT makes them emotionless, is complete garbage cooked up to sensationalize Naruto fanfics, just like the idea of a Konoha Council or Naruto being physically abused, besides, ANBU are fiercely loyal to the village and the Hokage, an emotionless person has no loyalty except to whom they view as a master and if that master dies, usually they follow suit, instead of carrying on their master's dreams.

I personally like Rei over Saeko.

Saeko's a fake, a fraud, a phony. Choose one. She hides behind the mask of a demure princess and then the next moment she's a bloodthirsty sociopath with superhuman swordsmanship. Give me a damn break. Half the shit she pulls with a sword would never happen, and in reality, she'd be the first to die solely because she relies on a sword. A sword only works in mid-range melee combat, once an opponent gets in your guard, a sword is useless, you have to have momentum to swing a katana, and eventually the swings will sap your strength, because a katana is heavy. It would actually be more believable if she wielded a wakizashi, they are much lighter and can be used in close quarters, even if someone gets within a foot of you, you can shift your grip on a wakizashi and still attack them, you can't do this with a katana because it's too long, it's like trying to use an axe to split a log that's literally six inches in front of you, unless you're gripping the middle of the handle, the axe is going to miss, same with a sword, unless you're gripping the blade itself, if someone gets in your guard, it's game over.

Rei is a more realistic character. She has real life issues, especially for a Japanese school kid, and acts more like a common modern age girl, not some samurai princess. In addition, her skills are more useful, unlike a sword, a spear is an ultimate melee weapon, she can not only stab people mid-range, she can use the staff to batter someone close range. It's much more difficult to get in the guard of a spear wielder, you can't just get close to them, you'd have to literally duck and get under them, behind the spear, otherwise they can just push you back with the staff. This is why spears are the go to weapons for EVERY ancient culture, Japanese, Chinese, even Greek and Mesopotamian cultures relied on spears more than swords, because they're a better universal weapon. Also Rei's trained to wield a bayonet, which means she's probably been trained not only how to wield them by hand, but wield them attached to a firearm, she probably hasn't been trained to shoot a firearm, but if she's trained to wield a bayonet attached to one, then she'll probably have no problem wielding a firearm, especially an M1A1 Super Match, it's a rather lightweight for a battle rifle.

Ummm...

People do realize that REAL life Ninjas probably would have pointed and laughed at Naruto world Ninjas right? Real life ninjas live in the shadows as assassins, spies, and thieves, they don't have villages and armies, they don't go using flashy techniques, they hide in the shadows and strike their opponent with pin point precision. For example, Kumawakamaru, was a ninja whose father was unjustly executed by a monk, and took his revenge by sneaking into the monk's room as he slept and stabbed the man with his own sword. Another famous ninja hid in an exact spot for several days under the tatami mat of his target's house, waited for his target to approach the spot, and then speared him from underneath the tatami mat. Ninja were viewed as cowards and dogs by the rest of Feudal Japan due to these tactics, they were not an organized military force like in Naruto. The closest thing to Naruto's world and real life ninja would be the Oniwaban group, whom were also featured in Roruni Kenshin, but they were actually more of an early form of a Japanese secret service, they protected the Shogun, historically the Oniwaban are not considered Ninja, but in fiction, they often are depicted as such.

So in reality, NONE of the Naruto characters are REAL ninja, they're glorified mercenaries... they're like a Japanese Blackwater group, although much less skilled from what I've seen.

Ummm first of all, the characters do know about zombies, because Hisashi comments "So it's just like in the movies, huh? One bite, and you become one of them.". However the word 'Zombie' itself is relatively new in Japan, seeing as how the word itself originates from Haitian voodoo beliefs. Asian cultures have different kinds of creatures that are a cross between zombies and vampires, in China they're called 'Hopping Vampires', and there's two of them in the Rosario Vampire manga. In Japan, I think the first time 'zombie' was openly used was "So this is a Zombie?" series. This is why Hisashi referred to them as 'Them' instead of Zombies, it's not that they don't know what they are, but that they don't have a word for it in Japan.

Also, there are other ways to Nerf Naruto to fit into the world other than the cliche "I lost all my chakra' shtick. For starters as many point out, Naruto is super powered, he can't afford to go around flinging Rasenshuriken everywhere or he risks not only attracting larger masses, but of killing his own allies. Keep in mind, his Rasenshuriken is compressed wind, and when he launches it, even he has to use chakra on his feet to prevent from getting blasted back by the sudden released wind, so naturally, if he used the attack near any normal human, they'd probably get thrown around like a hurricane nor tornado, and all it takes is one of them smashing into something or landing on the ground the wrong way for it to be all over. Even in Naruto, Naruto doesn't ALWAYS use his ninjutsu, he also fights with weapons, because sometimes you don't need flashy jutsu, you need a precise and quick surgical strike, so why people think he wouldn't use something like guns or knives in a modern world regardless of whether or not he has chakra, is beyond me.

I also don't see why people think he wouldn't use firearms, especially since most of the HotD crossovers depict a more serious and thoroughly trained Naruto. If he's a ninja, he's going to use whatever's at his disposal and whatever works efficiently, and nothing is more efficient than a gun, point, shoot, and done. Not to mention as a ninja, Naruto's marksmanship is probably going to be out of this world, if you can aim and throw a shuriken with expert precision, you're not going to have any trouble aiming a pistol, and on top of that, Naruto's raw strength is going to make it so even a 12-gauge shotgun's recoil won't effect him, so really, I think Naruto would take greatly to wielding a gun.

Rob chapter 7 . 8/10/2019
Soooo... Dunno why every 3rd story must be about mindraped Naruto... Like seriously? You think
Naruto emotional retard? COME ON...

Also ehm i dunno if you noticed but Naruto used mostly Kage Bunshin during entire series. IT IS HIS SIGNATURE...
Yet you make him incapable of using them? You do not write Naruto crossover, you write just about OC who has ninja skills and is called Naruto... Your OC is quite far from Naruto Uzumaki. And NO, i do not mean making him idiot in orange style...
xSean chapter 19 . 5/14/2019
Can tell, you had what looked like great ideas lined up. You were writing a proper, immersive fic and then it got all rushed to hell towards the later chapters. Is unfortunate.
xSean chapter 12 . 5/14/2019
For a character that really only cares about fullfilling his promise in regards to Ayane he has a tendency to not give a shit. His leadership had been questioned multiple times now, literally the night before or as he left and yet he steps out for a day with a simple note saying will be back tomorrow? He straight up shouldn't have followed Jin.
Caincrux chapter 15 . 4/22/2019
DISAPPOINTING. You ran out of plot to play so you decided to do teen angst. You even dragged Naruto away just to make some crappy drama. Should have ended it after the execution, pathetic
Caincrux chapter 9 . 4/22/2019
Wow, the drama is getting cringy
