Reviews for Conversations with Ozai
miajacobs1991 chapter 16 . 11/23/2018
There are so few fics that focus on Ozai in a slightly comedic way. I LOVED it. Thanks for taking time to write it!

novelreader chapter 2 . 12/4/2016
My only problem is the same problem I had in the comics, why is Zuko taking advice from Ozai? Heh even Ozai realizes the idiocy but he's just humouring Zuko isn't he. Maybe Zuko, despite his time with uncle, still has a desire to connect with his father, and right now they share a title, well Ozai had the title before it was taken away, so who would know best about being Fire Lord, then the former Fire Lord himself. Or it could be,deep down Zuko knows what to do and wants to do it but isn't sure, so he goes to the person he knows would agree with him. I don't know I read something about Uncle being a psychoanalyst, and how Zuko was projecting his feelings for his father and what he really thinks of his father onto Uncle in Season 1 and beginning of Season 2, like when he calls Uncle, "A lazy shallow old man whose just jealous of his brother", he really thinks of that on his father, because hell it describes Ozai to the T, but Zuko is holding onto the idealized version of his father instead of the reality. Much like here, how he really really wants to undo what the Fire Nation has done, and believe that they could be forgives, but knows the reality is they aren't and that the world will make them pay, so he needs to stand with his people so they don't get punished for something they had no control over. The real ones at fault is the Fire Lord.

Again why isn't he ordering Ozai's execution?

Amazing story. I love the idea that Mako and Bolin are Ozai's grandsons. Very nice job and an amazing characterization of your characters. I do wish we could have seen more of Azula, but regardless, this was a nice read.
Katani chapter 15 . 8/7/2014
This was amazing! I was glued the whole time though I wish Ozai would have changed.
Eclipse89 chapter 16 . 7/26/2014
Hey!

Yesterday, I read your fanfic. Usually, I don't review (yeah, I'm one of those sneaky, ungrateful readers). However, I felt guilty for not doing that the whole night. After all, an author deserves payment for entertaining me with such a good story. To the point.

The story is awesome. It's written smoothly, the style is very good. Reading it was a pure pleasure forme. The plot was well-paced and interesting; the story flowed smoothly. My attention was glued the whole time. The characters were very vivid and well-potrayed. I was startled, how in-charcter everyone was. They behaved the way, I expected. The interactions between the characters were great too. My personal favorite was the scene where Iroh visited Ozai. It would make a good moment in a movie - the remnants of what could be brotherly love were heart-wrenching.

About the endings, I preferred the first one, it seemed right to me, although I feld sad and disappointed after reading it (disappointed by Ozai's actions, not about your storytelling). I guess that both endings could be divided in two parts - until Ozai left (in the first case permanently) and the aftermath.

The ending no 1 was unrivaled in the first part. Not only Ozai's final demise was incredibly epic, but also more likely. I believe that if he could escape jail, he wouldn't suddenly become a nice guy. Part of me expected (or rather hoped) him to pull Darth Vader. His newly found concience would lead him to saving his son or something along these lines. However, the less romantic part knew perfectly that Ozai wouldn't do something that cheesy. In comparison, the turn of events in ending no 2 was somewhat forced and I wasn't convinced that Ozai would really do what's right. Anyway, point to ending no 1.

As for the aftermath, I didn't quite like the one in ending no 1. It was a bit bland compared to the rest of the story. Ending no 2, however, made me almost shed a tear. The history of Ozai's later family life was very emotional, bitter-sweet. He changed, learned the value of family, but there were dark moments (didn't love Ming). And that was perfect, because I wouldn't find spewing rainbows realistic. Despite changing his ways, you let Ozai become himself.

Overall, I'd still choose ending no 1.
SunflowerIce chapter 15 . 2/1/2014
Ive got to admit, I really liked the story, altough its somehow sad that ozai had to die..
but I think thats the way he would choose..
at least he showed he loved his daughter, although it was sad to see her end like this..
I like it that you really showed some caring sides of ozai, even though not towards zuko
anyway, nice end :)
Jozefski chapter 16 . 1/31/2014
Best. Ozai story. EVER!
Boogum chapter 16 . 1/26/2013
Ahh, well this was different. I find the other ending more realistic for Ozai's character in general, but this one had its own sense of tragic beauty. I certainly appreciate that Ozai was forced to accept that it was actually his actions that caused him to lose everything - not Zuko. I also liked that you brought in Bolin and Mako's father, as well as the scarf. That was lovely and sad.

In any case, I really liked this fic (as I said in the previous review). It was interesting and kept me hooked, as a good story should. Great job!
Boogum chapter 15 . 1/26/2013
Ohhh, yay. I love that he was Mako and Bolin's dad! That's awesome! :D

/Toes. She was going to say "Toes"….I just thought it came out funnier to leave it ambiguous./

LOL, yes. My mind went straight to the gutter - and was left floundering at the imagery. You are evil.

In any case, I loved this fic! Very nicely written, with excellent characterisations of all the characters, and I love that everything just flowed so naturally and didn't get bogged down in too many details. You kept a good pace and stuck to what was necessary, which made this a pleasure to read.
Boogum chapter 14 . 1/26/2013
Oh, wow! This was amazing! Like, seriously. Such a ffitting ending for Ozai. I actually did a cheer, which seems horrid, but this was poetic justice personified. Just brilliant!

I agree with what you said in your a/n. You didn't need to discuss how the revolt was put down or how the colonists got to go back to their lands (which would eventually become Republic City). We can fill in those blanks easily for ourselves.

And now I'm intrigued about what will happen to Ming and her child, who is a bastard royal, but a royal nonetheless. Onwards!
Boogum chapter 13 . 1/26/2013
I wasn't surprised at what Ozai did to Ming; I saw it coming. I'm not really surprised at what he did to Azula either, though I didn't see it coming. I thought he would just decide to leave her, knowing she would be a burden. But the fact he kills her does make sense (if you look at it thruogh his twisted logic). He would think he's doing her a service, not really caring that he did indeed just kill his daughter.

Things are getting really, really intense. I have no idea how you're going to resolve all of this - if you are at all.
Boogum chapter 12 . 1/26/2013
Yep, I knew that this was going to happen. Poor Aang. This is why I hate affair situations between characters I love; it's just so heartbreaking for everyone. :(

As much as Ozai might think the idea of running away from Ming sounds nice, I think his first answer is closer to the truth. He doesn't love Ming, and I honestly don't think Ozai could ever really be redeemed. There does come a point where the mind gets stuck too long in a certain way of thinking, and it's just too difficult to break that. Ozai is obsessed with power, but I also think he's like Zuko; they just can't forget who they really are, nor can they settle for less. In the same way that Zuko couldn't just be content wiht being "Lee", I doubt Ozai would ever be able to run away and be content as some hidden identity unless he somehow managed to gain power a la Long Feng style. Which still doesn't redeem him, lol.

I'm really worried how all of these riots and such are going to be resolved. Everything is just getting worse and worse in this fic in terms of happiness for the characters.
Boogum chapter 11 . 1/26/2013
Oh, this chapter. Oh my heart.

/"I'm sorry." Iroh murmured softly. "I'm sorry, little brother."

It wasn't until he felt his brother's calloused hand wipe the tears from his cheeks that he realized he had shed them./

Just beautiful. Tragic, of course, but so beautiful. Especially given what just happened before.

/Zuko breathed a heavy sigh. "What happened to make you hate me so much?"

Ozai opened his eyes and met his son's gaze through the darkness. "She chose you."/

Ahh, you're killing me here. I am flailing into speechlessness (which is not helped by the fact I am falling asleep, lol). But seriously, you just have THE GIFT for getting the right words, the right action, the right mood. I could envision and feel everything! I love this fic so much, even though it makes me sad.
