I much appreciate your take on The Crimson Hat. Many female authors focus on how devastated Lisbon was at Jane's deception and long absence. Of course that would be true. But the overtones of woman spurned seem way off target to me. Patrick Jane is trying, for years and years, to rid the world of the blight that is Red John. He undertakes a desperate, dangerous, trying mission to accomplish that. The only person more devastated than Lisbon by his absence would have been Jane himself. He voluntarily cut himself off from comfort, fellowship, and the woman he loved to try to accomplish his goal. Note that by this time he no longer has a choice. RJ is as obsessed with him as he is with RJ. RJ's demand for Lisbon's head makes it clear that RJ is fully aware that Lisbon is his greatest vulnerability. Even if RJ hasn't voiced it yet, the stakes are kill or be killed by then. Your story captures the painful, aching reality that they cannot have a future so long as RJ lives, that they cannot walk away even if they wanted. They come together in pain because that's all that's available to them. Excellent.

This story shows very vividly what they are feeling, devoting few words to naming those feelings, as is natural for both characters. But each action clearly has deep meaning that speaks for them.
