As a sabreuse, I can't claim a great deal of knowledge epee, but I am aware that some of the best fencers, at least in Australia, have a hearing impairment (hence what my fencing master referred to as the 'scarecrow dance' the referee does to explain a point). Probably others in the salle would understand BSL.

My little knowledge of epee suggests that it may have informed Mycroft's relationship with Jim - sometimes it is possible, even desirable, to land a touch by allowing your opponent to land one at the same time, as both will be counted.
