Reviews for The Gift
BladedBlossom chapter 1 . 9/5/2012
Oh, man. The first time I saw this scene in Phantom Menace, I was tearing up. I totally believed in Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan as a team, and that caress to the cheek just, ow! So much to say; so little time. And even this gesture to train Anakin would probably be lost on Obi-Wan initially. I think Obi-Wan would have done it purely as a favor to Qui-Gon, which is probably why Yoda flat out said he didn't approve of Obi-Wan training Anakin. And yet, if Anakin hadn't been a Jedi, he'd have fallen to the Sith much sooner and completely, with no chance for redemption, I think.

But I think Obi-Wan did understand, in the end, especially when training Luke. I think Luke was the Padawan Obi-Wan chose, so the love wasn't tainted by emotional blackmail, real or imagined. After all, Obi-Wan fell trying to protect Luke, just as Qui-Gon fell trying to keep Maul away from Obi-Wan. So says my personal fanon. *nods*

I like that you touched on Knighting Obi-Wan and the Council disaster. Am ambivalent as to the canonicity of Tahl, Xanatos, etc, but it's acceptable here. The question of attachment and support and how Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan need people to teach and learn from was very nice and accurate. They really have a lot in common, even if they are opposites outwardly. Most of all, I like that Qui-Gon is focused on Obi-Wan here. It is clear Obi-Wan is his son and Anakin is someone he thinks must be trained but he doesn't really have much invested personally.

Interesting take on why Qui-Gon did and said what he did. Sad that Obi-Wan didn't understand.

Wow, absolutely loved it. I don't think I've ever seen anyone do Qui-Gon's final moments so well :)

Very well done. I always enjoyed the father/son relationship between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon and I think you captured this well.

Very nice! I love that second person present tense, too. A fine take on that horrible moment, one interpreting QUi Gon's behest as a gift to Obi Wan. Short but sweet!

So *sniff* sad. I was always mad at Mr. Lucas for how he sort of forgot that QUI-GON WAS OBI-WAN'S MASTER FOR A TON OF YEARS! Seriously, I always felt sorry for poor Obi and how he just sort of got forgotten since Anakin came on the scene.

A lovely job reconciling all the sore points in that scene for us Obi-Wan fans. Qui-Gon was thinking of Obi-Wan after all. Very nice.

Also I laughed that Qui-Gon counted defying the Council right up there in the list of joys of life which he would miss. ;)

Good job!
