I am rereading this story for what feels like the tenth time and, while it is excellent, although unfinished, I must protest the use of the word retarded. It's a slur in no matter what context it is used. I'm sure you didn't mean it harmfully, but I would greatly appreciate if you would change it and perhaps be more mindful in the future.
