Reviews for Dreams of Jacob
Eh Bien chapter 24 . 3/19
Thanks for a well written and enjoyable story.
Eh Bien chapter 19 . 3/19
Nice to encounter someone who properly appreciates Vertigo. It's unlikely most teenagers would be able to see past the lack of gunplay and CGI monsters and such and recognize the intense creepiness, but I'm willing to accept that these two can - especially since this probably is, as you suggest, for the sake of foreshadowing.

Re: your comments...I don't really have a favourite genre, but I'd go with lactation porn. Not that I particularly enjoy it; it just sort of pleases me that it exists.
On the 'least favourite' side, my husband once found (at his workplace!) a magazine with pornography featuring women being torn apart by machinery. Porn has a very substantial dark side, or perhaps I should say darker side.
I'm wondering about your intentions in showing J & R's relationship. It's distinctly young, playful, and silly. Is Jacob just being himself, according to your version, or is the imprint causing him to adapt to what Nessie needs at this particular stage of her development? That may become clear as the story continues.
Eh Bien chapter 15 . 3/19
I love your way of hinting that Nessie is starting to see more in Jacob: "We'll call it a draw." Very sweet and subtle.
Eh Bien chapter 13 . 3/19
Interesting point, about movies being made for human eyes. It wouldn't have occurred to me. Sounds like Jasper could corner the market on cinema for a vampire audience.

Your Nessie is a very believable teenager, and you get across the frustrations of her current position: powerful demigoddess, yet still plagued by the inadequacies of adolescent sex and by annoying parental restrictions. Kind of hilarious, and plausible in a teenager, that her reaction to a grand tour of Europe is "I've already seen it" (!) and prefers a road trip with her grandfather. Although I like her enthusiasm for a tour of Hitchcock movie settings.
Eh Bien chapter 10 . 3/18
Solid advice. Good that Nessie has someone who can provide it, especially if Jake is right about her parents, as he might well be. Also good that Jake has learned from his unfortunate past.
Eh Bien chapter 9 . 3/18
Wow. S Meyer channeling Carlos Castaneda. Well done, but yes, very very weird.
Eh Bien chapter 7 . 3/18
This is a cute, interesting take on the whole imprinting situation. Jacob and Nessie both being aware of it all, and able to freely discuss it, changes things significantly; and having it combined with very ordinary teenaged angst changes it even more. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this.

As for your notes on the Meyer version of first and only love...well, I'm of two minds. I can justify it if I regard the Twilight stories as mythology - which they are, at least to some extent. They're about love between a human and a supernatural creature, after all; and so the fairy-tale version of love as immediate, overpowering, and lifelong goes with the territory, from ancient myths, to Tristan and Isolde or Romeo & Juliet, to actual fairy tales like Cinderella or The Little Mermaid. They're not meant to be taken too literally. The characters are figures in an otherworldly narrative that has little in common with the real world, and that's fine.

What sets Twilight apart is that it uses an ordinary, present-day setting and commonplace human characters, rather than idealized types; and writes the story in the manner of a YA novel; and that's where the ambivalence comes in. (I won't comment on whether Meyer did a good job using this approach; that's a separate matter.)

If I look at Twilight as a myth in which a girl turns her back on humanity to join her lover in the underworld - even if it is incongruously set in an ordinary small-town high school - then the instant bond thing makes perfect sense. Even the imprinting of an adult on an infant works; there are stranger pairings in supernatural love stories, including between human and bird, humans who are transformed into animals or trees, and who knows what; and a couple destined to be together from birth goes with the territory.

If, however, we're to take Twilight as a modern, mostly straightforward love story, with characters who think and behave like real people, only with the addition of one or two supernatural elements to the otherwise realistic story, then all kinds of things become a problem. In that case, 17-year-olds pledging eternal devotion is problematic, and a baby bound for life to a grown man downright creepy. People seeking death because they've lost their first love is not dramatic in that case, but unbalanced. Adding vampires or what have you to the plot doesn't erase that.

Now, your story seems to be walking a fine line, fully accepting the supernatural elements of the story, but refusing to leave them unexamined, and incorporating them into a genuinely realistic, down to earth storyline. It actually acknowledges and deals with the creepiness. A challenge, but an intriguing one, and you've made a good start.

Sorry for the long, rambling reply; I thought the question was worthwhile.
Raquel Rosenberg chapter 6 . 7/27/2018
I'm crazy late to this party, but I think a little perspective makes the heart grow fonder. I always feel a little sad in other stories when they hook up and she's barely legal.
Stylish hero 101 chapter 12 . 8/22/2017
I am a style hero, not a fanfic hero...some story's need saving! This story...ITS FUCKING AWSOME!
PastOneonta chapter 24 . 6/28/2014
Enjoyed it, the characters, the relationship between Jake and Nessie, the road trip with Charlie and Sue, the author's notes. Thanks for writing.
PastOneonta chapter 22 . 6/28/2014
Sweet and genuine and not contrived. Really nice.
PastOneonta chapter 21 . 6/28/2014
Jake must be confused, he was sure he was always going to be her friend. I am sad and worried.

Charlie is awesome, your Charlie and movie Charlie, love him.
PastOneonta chapter 20 . 6/28/2014
So this could be the beginning of something special. If they allow it. Right now they both feel too wrong. Very sweet though.
PastOneonta chapter 13 . 6/28/2014
Edward looking down on Jake. No reason for it. Glad she didn't go to Europe.
