When he said "Haven't got something like this in a long time" my heart BROKE for him. I'm all like AAWWWWWWW! :D It was like a happy sad. Happy because he was finally able to love someone like he had before but sad because of the loss he experienced. I LOVE IT!

Initially I thought it's going to be something similar as the one Sarah gave to Joel - which will lead to a slightly sad and emotional ending, but no, it's quite pleasant and I find it very delightful.

Well, I think that Joel can do something for her, right?, something to thank her after all, they are close to each other, in their special way, I think that could be the best ending, the problem I see is what holliday celebrate, maybe her birthday (if Joel asnwers to Ellie the date of his birthday, maybe he can use that "door" to ask hers, i'm just saying...)
