That's awfully close to flashback within a flashback.

Could be worse, Adventures of Light and Dark used to abuse the hell out of it with flashforward mixed in and it's also referred to as a flashback.

Hmm, self-insert fanfics can be somewhat of a toss-up. On the one hand, they're a very old cliche even though it's only been around for a few years, and more than not they turn out to be complete wankfests about what the author "correcting" areas of the medium in question that they feel failed them, so they can get very annoying. On the other other hand, they can work, they just depend on the writer, and you've shown yourself to be very capable. I'm very curious as to why you're in Gendo's body, however. I really hate abusive fathers, so unless you do something to drastically alter his personality and how he interacts with others, I probably won't like this. I do hope some of the changes you make include treating Shinji better. Not really much I can say. Label me "cautiously interested" for now.

No annoying character because this chapter is too short.

Final score for Chapter 1 of this fic is 5/10. Nothing really great or extraordinary, but it does have an interesting start. The only concern now is if you can avoid falling into overused fanfiction cliches, or if you do use them, to put a new spin or twist on them.

It's pretty ironic you know, but I think Gendo's Anno's self insert. It's the reason I think he's hated, not because he's bad, but because he's a bad self-insert character for a director who's favourite archtype is the 'silent old man with facial hair' cliche. Throughout eva his actions are never portrayed as being bad or negative. Cheesey, overly dramatic and convoluted tragedy, the cringy and unrealistic hint that no one can beat this smirking 50year old japanese man Evangelion. To me these are classic SI signs.
A self insert, that 's about a self insert is pretty ironic.

...that last bit, right there at the end of the chapter. Seriously, inspiring Shinji...that was freaking awesome! Not gunna lie, I'm looking forward to next chapter and seeing how much a manly pep talk will help Shinji in the coming fight. This chapter is pretty good, and I like the fact the real Gendo's and possibly SEELE's plans would be screwed over.

We all love to fantasize ourselves being in control of a certain character, but if it's Gendo...things can get pretty weird.
