- And Those That Free Us -

"What do you think this place is?" The boy asked. He was sat on the banking of a hill, overlooking a vast plane of emptiness. Light filled the sky above. Next to him was a girl, no older than himself.

"I'm not sure," the girl replied in her gentle voice.

"I keep seeing images but … I can't make any sense of it … all I know is that I once was home and now I'm here."

"What was it like?" She asked.

"Home?"

"Yes, was it like here?" The girl wondered, glancing off towards the distant hills and valleys. The boy gave a smile as he spoke.

"No, home was full of life and happiness … even until the end."

"So, you remember it?"

"I remember him, always."

"Can you still see him?"

"Always," the boy nodded.

"Do you know if he can still see you?" The girl asked, resting her head upon the boy's shoulder. The boy thought for a moment and then gave another smile.

"Yes, I believe he can," replied the boy. The girl let out a sigh as she closed her eyes.

"Is he still in pain?" She asked.

"… Always."

It was the 27th of May 2027. Eleven days had passed since Kaito had arrived in Kamiosaki. It had been an eventful journey for him, as well as a positive one. He had reunited with his family and had found that they weren't so distant after all. Kaito had spent the past few days coaching Isami in rugby, helping Emiri cook and shop as well as, of course, listening to stories told by his uncle Kioshi; ones which involved Kaito's parents and his gran. Despite this, Kaito still felt the anxiety and guilt that he so often had to cope with on a day to day basis. It was at times like this when he valued alone time the most. It was an odd case really, Kaito hated being alone as he would ruminate and replay events over and over in his head when so, yet he felt that the only way he could deal with them was to ride them out; alone. He would often take walks, close himself away or perhaps even drink. Yet, today he had been tasked with grocery shopping. "What if I get lost?" Kaito had asked his aunt before she had left for work that morning. "I still don't know my way around very well."

"Don't worry, just ask for directions!" Emiri had chirped on her way through the front door. That was that, Kaito would have to find his way around, or risk having to ask for directions. This prospect wasn't very appealing to him on day like today, a day full of rumination and doubt. He wasn't sure why he felt in such a way today, if anything he had been a bit more upbeat as of late. However, as he strolled along the road, making his way back to the Sakumoto residence from the supermarket, he gave it some thought. Perhaps he felt that there were still questions left to answer? After all, he had spoken with Kioshi at great lengths about the ordeal between his father and uncle. He had learnt more about his grandfather, Kusuo, and even learnt about Emiri and Kioshi's relationship, how they met etc. Yet, despite this he couldn't place his finger on what was bothering him. Juni? … he thought to himself. Perhaps. As he continued, he noticed a long line of fencing on one side of the road. Moving over to it, he placed the shopping bags on the floor and leant against it. Taking out a cigarette he did his usual routine. After a few minutes of indulgence, he examined the fence he was leant on. Looking through, he could make out an abandoned housing estate.

"Why is this so familiar?" He muttered to himself. Thinking back, he remembered that several days ago, he and Kioshi had been walking home after a few drinks. Kioshi was rather drunk and had taken Kaito down a wrong turn, leading to this very estate; Kaito had indeed gotten lost. Whilst there, Kioshi had acted rather emotional. Initially Kaito had put it down to the alcohol yet he was having second thoughts. Looking on, he remained there, studying the estate that sat on the other side of the fence; noting once again how familiar it felt.

"Thanks again Kaito," Emiri beamed as she, Kaito, Kioshi and Isami all sat down at the kitchen table, tucking into their meal.

"'Course," Kaito smiled. "I may not be a great cook, but I can follow a shopping list."

"It is an underappreciated talent," Kioshi stated as Emiri waved him off.

"Are we still on for training tonight?" Isami asked, looking to Kaito with a mouthful of food. Kaito nodded.

"How is he coming along?" Kioshi questioned, nudging Kaito. "I was never very athletic myself."

"He gets better every day," Kaito replied. Isami sighed.

"The try-outs are in a couple of days though … I don't know if I'll be good enough by then."

"Obviously we still need to work on his confidence," Kaito chuckled.

"Don't worry sweetie," Emiri said, smiling at her son. "I'm sure you'll do great!" Kaito nodded in agreement. Isami shrugged his shoulders as he returned to his food. "Oh, by the way Kaito," Emiri said as Kaito looked over. "My friend, Ryoko and I are going out for a few drinks tomorrow night. She's bringing her daughter wh-"

"What does that have to do with me?" Kato asked suspiciously. Emiri laughed.

"Well obviously I want you to come." Emiri replied. Kaito went quiet as both Isami and Kioshi looked towards him.

"Are you trying to set the kid up?" Kioshi asked with a smirk. Emiri shook her head.

"Nope, we've already been through that, haven't we?" She laughed, looking back to Kaito. Kaito gave a begrudging nod. "Really Kaito, it's just that Ryoko's daughter has been away living with her father for the past few years. She's just moved back, and she doesn't have any friends at the time being. I thought that since you're also unfamiliar with this town that you two would have something in common." She gave a shrug as Isami and Kioshi both looked to Kaito again, each with a grin on their face. "Also," Emiri began again, "every night you're either up gossiping with Kioshi or helping Isami with his rugby."

"And what's wrong with me?" Kioshi asked, raising an eyebrow. Isami nodded.

"Nothing my dear!" Emiri beamed as she looked over to her husband. "Here have some more," she laughed as she poured some more rice out onto the man's plate. Kioshi peered down at his wife. Giving a smile, he began to eat again. "So Kaito, I just thought that maybe you could do with a night out? Perhaps with someone your own age? … female … single," Emiri finished, letting out a cough over her last two words. As Kioshi and Isami both continued to eat, their eyes still found their way to Kaito. He felt a bit uncomfortable, yet he could see Emiri still smiling at him.

"I dunno …" Kaito mumbled.

"Oh g- on!" Kioshi yelled through his food. Swallowing, he continued. "You never know you might have a nice time. Worst comes to worst, you jump on the first train back to Hikarizaka right?" He smirked. Kaito laughed, that was true, he could always go home. Looking over to Isami, he spoke.

"You think you can spare a night without me?"

"Sure," Isami nodded. "I've got Michio and Shun anyway." Kaito nodded.

"I can always give you a lesson or two," Kioshi stated, looking over to his son.

"I thought you weren't athletic?" Isami asked. Kioshi shook his head. Pointing his chopsticks at the boy, he spoke.

"I said I wasn't very athletic, not that I wasn't athletic. The 'very' is … well, very important." The man shrugged. Isami rolled his eyes. He looked to Kaito.

"So yeah, I've got Michio and Shun." He stated. Kaito nodded.

"Well then Kaito?" Emiri asked as the man looked her way. "Should I take it as a yes?"

"Sure, why not." Kaito smiled as Emiri beamed once again.

Later that evening, Kaito, Isami, Shun and Michio were sat down on top of the grassy hill. They were having a drink together after a few hours of practicing rugby. Michio lay back as he let out a groan. "I don't think I've done this much exercise." He mumbled. Shun looked over.

"Since when?" He asked.

"What?"

"You don't think you've done this much exercise since when?" Shun echoed. Michio shook his head.

"No, I just haven't done this much exercise … like ever." He grinned as he looked over to Isami who was laid out flat, catching his breath. "You should know how much effort I'm putting in for you Isami. If you don't end up getting laid, then it'll all be for nothin'!"

"You needed to lose a few pounds anyway," Isami jested.

"Please! I'm fit as … well, check out these!" Michio sneered as he flexed his muscles. Shun and Isami looked on at the boy. Amid this, Kaito had been off to the side, thinking, ruminating and doubting. He couldn't shake his feeling from earlier that day. What was bothering him? He wasn't sure. The notion of not knowing was what bothered him the most … the uncertainty. What is that place? He thought to himself, referring to the housing estate. Why can't I jus-

"Kaito?" A voice asked. He looked over. Isami, Michio and Shun were all staring at him. "Are you okay?" Isami asked.

"Fine, why?"

"You've been staring into space for a while now," Isami replied.

"I'm fine, just thinking …"

"About how terrible Isami will be in his try-outs right?" Michio scoffed. Isami chucked his bottled water at the boy as Michio let out a yell. "Uncalled for!"

"You deserved it." Isami sneered. Turning back to his cousin, he spoke again. "You were just spaced out is all."

"I'm fine." Kaito stated bluntly. Shun gave a smile.

"You know, if you're feeling down Kait-"

"I said I'm fine Juni! Jus-" Kaito cut himself short once he realised what he had said. Isami, Michio and Shun all looked on with confusion. Kaito gave a huff as he brought his hand to his head. Isami went to speak, yet Michio cut him off.

"Who the hell is Juni?" Michio asked. Kaito gave a moan as he stood up.

"Kaito?" Shun uttered. Kaito waved him off as he began to walk away.

"Off for a smoke," Kaito mumbled as he made his way over to the banking and set about his routine.

"Your cousin is one weird guy," Michio stated in a hushed tone. Isami looked over to Kaito as he gave a sigh.

"What's wrong with him?" Shun asked in a sympathetic tone. Isami didn't answer, he just looked on at his cousin. In truth, Isami knew that there was far more to Kaito's story than had been let on, though he didn't want to push, he hoped that Kaito would open up, whether it be sooner or later.

Another day had passed as Kaito lay back in his bed. He was once again restless. Bringing out his phone, he looked over his messages again; his messages to Juni. What happened today, it wasn't right … I shouldn't have said that. He thought to himself. He reminds me of you … they all remind me of us … I miss it Juni, every single day. Letting out a sigh, he jotted his thought down on his phone and hit the send button. It bounced back with a notification stating that the receiving number was out of service. Giving a sigh, Kaito placed the phone under his pillow as he rolled over into his sheets, shutting his eyes again.

"Kaito!" Kioshi bellowed as he marched through the living room door, an old shoe box was in his hands. Kaito was sat on the sofa with Emiri, watching the television.

"What's in there?" Kaito asked as he looked over to his uncle.

"Shall we take a look?" He suggested, placing the box down on the floor in front of Kaito and Emiri. Emiri switched the television off as Kaito moved to the floor.

"You want me to open it?" He asked. Kioshi nodded. Emiri looked on at her husband with a curious gaze, Kioshi gave her a smile as Kaito opened the box. He pulled the contents out, revealing several photo albums.

"I didn't know we still had those," Emiri smiled as Kioshi nodded.

"Found them in the attic," he replied. Kaito studied the albums for a moment before he looked to his uncle.

"What's in them?"

"Photos," Kioshi smirked as Emiri chuckled. Kaito rolled his eyes.

"I know that, I meant what are th-"

"Take a look," Kioshi stated, giving an encouraging nod. Kaito gave a sigh as he opened the album. He was met with several photos of whom he recognised to be his grandmother and grandfather, only a lot younger.

"She was a stunner, your mother," Emiri said to Kioshi as the two looked over the photos.

"She was," Kioshi smiled. He joined his wife on the sofa as Kaito continued to flick through the photos, making sure his relative could see them as well. Kaito came to a stop as his eyes landed on a picture of Kioshi, Emiri and his parents; Kunio and Maiha. They were sat at a table in a café, Emiri looked heavily pregnant. "That was just before Isami was born," Kioshi stated. Emiri nodded.

"You would have been about 4 at this time Kaito," she added.

"You seem really happy," Kaito muttered. "All of you, together."

"It's like I said," Kioshi began. "Your dad and I had our ups and downs, but we loved each other, and we had a good time together, all of us."

"Right," nodded Kaito. Emiri gave a smile.

"Seeing you next to that photo Kaito, well, you do look so much like him."

"You do," Kioshi agreed. Kaito didn't reply, he flicked over to the next page. There was a photo of his parents along with a much younger Kaito. The three were stood outside a house, its garden was very tidy, and its white paint was kept in an immaculate condition. "There he is," Kioshi laughed.

"Aren't you adorable," Emiri said in awe. Kaito studied the photo. The younger Kaito looked back at him with a beaming smile on his face. He was carried in his fathers' arms as his mother stood next to them, also smiling.

"I don't remember this being taken." Kaito sighed, "number 70 … was that my house?" Kioshi and Emiri shared a look.

"You were only young Kaito," Kioshi replied. "You must've only been 5 or so."

"I see," Kaito mumbled. "I don't remember that house … though … it is familiar." To the side of the house sat a long row of other houses, forming an estate. It took a moment for Kaito to remember where he had seen this place before. "K-Kioshi," Kaito uttered.

"Yeah?"

"We were there the other night, right?" He asked, looking to the man with wide eyes.

"When was this?" Emiri asked, giving her husband a worried look. Kioshi brought his hand to the back of his head as he scratched it.

"You remember right?" Kaito asked. "When we were coming home the other night, we took a wrong turn. This is that housing estate, right?" Kaito asked in an urgent manner. Kioshi let out a sigh as he nodded. "Is that why you were upset?"

"Kaito …"

"Why didn't you tell me then?" The young man asked, closing the photo album, he had become rather serious. Emiri placed a hand on her husbands' leg as she spoke.

"Kioshi, tell him." Emiri stated. Kioshi gave a sigh.

"Maybe I should've sorted through these …" he mumbled. Emiri shook her head.

"Kioshi."

"Okay," the man said. Looking to his nephew, he gave a weak smile. "Where we were … it is that place in that photo Kaito. I didn't tell you because … well, a while back; several years, after your parents moved away of course, the whole estate was bought out. The people there were offered new homes in a separate estate. A company was wanting to build up the surrounding areas of the town … anyway, it's taken a long time for the project to get off the ground but they're going to be demolishing it all soon." Kaito remained quiet as his relatives looked on at him, hopeful that Kaito had not become upset. Kaito cleared his throat.

"I don't understand why you wouldn't tell me."

"I'm sorry Kaito, I just … I didn't want to tell you that your child hood home was being torn down, it's not exactly a nice thought." Kioshi replied as Emiri nodded in agreement.

"But I don't remember it …" Kaito sighed. "Everything about this place … this town … it's all a haze." Kioshi stood up and leant down next to Kaito. Taking the photo album, he placed it in the box and picked it up. Getting up off the floor, he spoke.

"Maybe now isn't the best time to be looking at the past, not so much anyway." Kioshi shrugged. "I'm sorry Kaito, It … It's best to forget it for now."

"Right," Emiri smiled. "Besides, we have to get ready for tonight," she chuckled. Kaito was still quiet. "Do you still want to come?" She asked, rather worried. Kaito looked to her a he managed a smile.

"Yeah … I'll go and get ready," he muttered as he got up and left the living room. The staircase could be heard creaking as Kaito made his way up them.

"I'm so stupid," Kioshi groaned as he looked down to the box in his hands.

"Your intention was good though," Emiri replied. "Kaito knows that." Kioshi nodded as he let out another sigh.

"I just hope he's okay."

Kaito, Emiri, her friend; Ryoko and her daughter; Mioko, were all sat in a booth at a local bar. Ryoko was a plump woman with a bush of light hair and blue eyes. Mioko was similar in looks, her hair was light and her eyes also blue, yet her figure was of a much slimmer build. Ryoko was Emiri's colleague at work, they were discussing the salon; conversing about the peculiar customers they often got. Kaito sat there, his dark jacket hung over the back of the booth. He was fiddling with his beer bottle, peeling back the label. Mioko sat opposite him, gently tugging at the end of her cardigan sleeve. Emiri and Ryoko continued to chat. "Umeko-Chan definitely is an oddball," Ryoko laughed. "Her hair never stays in one place."

"I know," Emiri chuckled. Ryoko looked to her daughter as she nudged her. Mioko looked up as she saw her mother gesturing for her to speak up. Emiri, noticing this, did the same to Kaito. As Kaito looked up, he and Mioko locked eyes.

"Where do you work Kaito?" She asked. Kaito shuffled in his seat as he spoke.

"I'm unemployed at the moment," he replied. Mioko nodded.

"I see."

"Kaito is staying with Kioshi and I," Emiri explained. "He's currently visiting."

"Oh, for how long?" Ryoko asked. Kaito shrugged as Emiri smiled.

"Yet to be determined," she laughed.

"Where are you visiting from?" Mioko asked. Kaito looked to her as he forced a smile.

"Hikarizaka."

"Never heard of it," she admitted, still tugging at her sleeve.

"It's a small place," Emiri explained. "Quite far from here."

"Yeah," nodded Kaito as he took a swig of his beer.

"You're Emiri and Kioshi's nephew?" Ryoko asked. Kaito looked to the woman, raising an eyebrow you already know this, he thought to himself.

"On Kioshi's side," Emiri stated. "He's Kioshi's brother's son."

"Oh, I didn't know Kioshi had a brother," Ryoko smiled. Kaito looked to Emiri who gave a sympathetic smile to her nephew. Looking back to the other two, she spoke.

"They're distant but Kaito's close to us, especially with Isami," Emiri fibbed, hoping to ease the conversation for the young man by her side.

"Did your father grow up around here as well?" Ryoko asked, looking to Kaito. He didn't reply, Emiri let out a sigh as she spoke.

"He did, but they moved away some time ago," she stated.

"I see," Ryoko replied. Kaito stood up as he grabbed his jacket.

"I'm going to go outside for a little while," he said to Emiri. "For a smoke." Emiri nodded as she squeezed to the side to let him through. He moved passed her, not looking to the others at the table as he went to the bar's exit and moved outside. The others could see him through the large window at the front, lighting his cigarette and hanging his head back.

"Is he alright?" Mioko asked.

"Yeah … would you excuse me for a minute, I just need to speak with him."

"Of course," Ryoko replied, "I'll get another round." She smiled as she stood up and made her way over to the bar.

"I won't be a moment," Emiri said as Mioko gave a nod. Emiri followed Kaito outside as Mioko looked on through the window. Stepping outside, Emiri saw Kaito stood off to her left, leant against a wall. He noticed her coming over as he smiled. "Are you okay?" She asked. Kaito shrugged.

"I don't know … I feel off today."

"Are you coming down with something?" Emiri questioned, raising her palm to his forehead; feeling for a temperature. Kaito moved his head away as Emiri stopped; she appeared almost hurt by his apprehension. "Kaito, if there's something wrong then please, tell me."

"I'm just … I don't know … I'm not sure this was a good idea."

"What? Coming here?" She asked; Kaito nodded as he took another drag on his cigarette. "I'm sorry, I just thought it would be nice for you."

"Yeah, I know … to be honest, I don't think I'm ready Emiri … meeting new people like this … I shouldn't be drinking anyway; I made that mistake the other night as well."

"What do you mean?"

"I've had problems with drinking … I dunno, I just shouldn't be doing it; not right now anyway," admitted Kaito. Emiri gave a frown.

"I'm sorry Kaito, I didn't know."

"I should've said, it's not your fault."

"But I feel as if I pressured you into this tonight … I know things have been hard for you lately, I was just trying to help." She stated, giving a weak smile. Kaito nodded.

"I'm thankful for that. My head is a mess though … I think I just need to go back and get some sleep."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes," Kaito nodded. Giving a sympathetic smile, he spoke. "I'm sorry Emiri." She shook her head and placed her arms around him, giving him a tight squeeze. Kaito wrapped his free arm around his aunt. They came apart.

"Don't be sorry Kaito, go and get some rest. I'll see you tomorrow," she beamed. Kaito gave a grateful nod as he turned around and headed for Emiri's home. Emiri looked on at her nephew with a sad haze in her eyes. Giving a sigh, she turned around and headed back inside.

Kaito's eyes stared up at the ceiling of his room. Yet again, he couldn't sleep. His mind raced, thinking over the past few days. Still, one thought would always emerge stronger than the others. Giving a huff, he sat up and opened the blinds that lay over the window to his right. Looking out, the night sat still over the town of Kamiosaki. It was quiet, calm and inviting. Looking over to his phone, he checked the time; 1:00 am. Kioshi and the others would be asleep; it was almost definite. Pulling himself out of his bed, he moved over to his chair and grabbed his jacket. After dressing himself, he opened the bedroom door and headed out.

The cool night air soothed him as Kaito made his way down the road and away from the house. The inhabitants of the town slept soundly; there was no one around to be seen. Kaito was alone. He knew full well where his path would take him. This time he was not lost, this time he moved with purpose and speed, taking long strides as he pushed his way through the desolate streets. What would he find? He did not know. Small specs of snow began to descend from the sky; highly unusual for the time of year, though it did not phase Kaito. Something was pushing him, perhaps even pulling him forwards. After a short while, he came to his destination. He was stood on the exterior of the large row of metal fencing which held its perimeter around the abandoned housing estate; Kaito's home. Assessing the exterior, he could see no visible way inside; he would have to climb. Wedging the front of his right boot in to a gap within the cross-hatch fencing, he brought his hands up and began to follow through, ascending the metal barrier. As he came to the top; a good 8ft or so from the ground, he looked around. The breeze whistled as it brushed through his hair, yet again, soothing Kaito; as if a presence was with him, keeping him focused. Making sure there was no one around, he lowered himself over the other side and dropped. He landed, hunched down and knees high; he had made it. Rows upon rows of houses lay in front of him. Giving a sigh, he began his hunt…

The estate felt like a ghost town as the snow still fell at a light pace. Kaito was stood before a boarded-up house. Number Seventy; he had found it. He felt his chest tighten slightly as he grew nervous. Running his hand over his wispy stubble, he edged forward toward the front door. The house stood tall, consisting of two stories. It wasn't overly wide; a pathway led around the right side of the house and towards the back yard. To the left stood another structure. Evidently, number seventy was the end of a long row of houses. As Kaito came up the front door, he reached out towards the door handle; giving it a tug. It would not budge. It was either locked, boarded or both. Kaito moved around the right side. He walked forward, looking for a window that wasn't bound by wood. As he made his way around the back of the house, Kaito noticed a large window that was partially covered; a large pane had been broken through. Coming up to it, he peered inside. It was dark and dingy, yet he could make out several counters and cupboards attached to the walls; it was a kitchen. Carefully, he hoisted himself up, the gap in the window was large enough for him to fit through. Nudging through the gap, he brought his leg down and lowered himself inside. It was far too dark to see anything aside from what sat in his immediate area. Bringing out his phone, he switched on it's torch, holding it up. Suddenly, a figure dashed across the room at him, knocking his phone out of his hand. As the figure pinned him down, Kaito lashed out, cursing. "Stay still!" The figure yelled as Kaito looked up. It was an older man, with a head full of matted, dark hair. He had a bushy beard and piercing green eyes. Kaito felt very intimidated. "What the hell are you doing here?!" The man yelled. "This is my house, there's plenty of others to pick from so get out or I'll cut you!" He said as he produced a knife. Kaito gave a cry as he spoke.

"I- I'm not here to-"

"Get out!" The man yelled, tightening his grip on Kaito with one hand, with the other he held the knife to Kaito's throat. Kaito's eye widened as he breathed heavily.

"P-please, I'm just here to look around," Kaito uttered. The man narrowed his eyes. "I- I used to live here … please, let go of me …"

"You're not here to take the house?"

"What?" Kaito asked, eyes still wide. "N-no I'm really just here to look around!" The man loosened his grip slightly as he lowered the knife.

"What's your name?"

"Kaito …"

"And you came here to look around … because you used to live here?" The man asked. Kaito nodded, his heart was pounding. "You got any money?"

"What?"

"Money." The man stated dryly. Kaito nodded as he moved to reach into his pocket. The man had let go yet he still held out his knife. "Don't do anything stupid," he muttered. Kaito slowly pulled out his wallet and produced several notes, handing them to the man. "Right," he said as he stood up, backing away from Kaito. "Get up slowly." Kaito did as he was told. Reaching to the floor, the man picked up Kaito's phone. He reached out, handing it to the young man. Kaito hesitated for a moment yet he took the phone; looking it over, it had a noticeable crack down it's screen, yet it still looked like it worked. Kaito let out a sigh as the man spoke. "The living room is off limits." He stated as he retreated down a hallway and slammed a door. Kaito stepped back as he leant against a counter, breathing heavily. He clutched his chest; again, taking deep breaths in an attempt to calm himself. He brought his palms up to his face, burying it in them. Then he quietly sobbed to himself in the darkness of the room.

The ground floor consisted of a kitchen, a small toilet, a coat room and the door to what was presumably the living room. Deciding that the ground floor held no significance, Kaito made for the staircase that sat at the front of the house. Each step gave a loud moan as he crept up them, unsure as to what lay in the darkness above. As he made his way to the top, his phone still in hand; the torch was still intact, he came to a set of three door. One to the left, one in front and one to the right. He made to the left as he pushed the door open. It was the upstairs bathroom. A foul smell came from within; the toilet appeared broken. A large mirror sat on one wall above a sink, both were smashed to bits. A large bath tub remained intact. Looking it over and giving a sigh, Kaito stepped back and closed the door. He made for the second room directly at the top of the landing. He hesitated before opening the door; nothing felt familiar. This irked him but, what was he hoping to find? Again, he did not know. Taking a deep breath, he pushed on the door as it creaked open. Inside sat the frame of a large bed; presumably for two people. A built-in wardrobe, with slits running across horizontally, lay at one corner of the room. At the opposite end to Kaito, tattered curtains swayed about in the breeze caused by the cracks in the window. Kaito moved over to the bed frame as he perched on the very end of it. Looking down, he sighed. Mom … Dad … what am I doing? … Gran … Juni … what am I doing? … he brought his hand up to his head as he did his usual action; he ran his fingers through his thick locks of dark hair. I have to keep going. Standing up, he moved over to the door and exited the room. He looked over to the final door. Preparing himself, he walked up to it and pushed on the wooden panels; it would not open. Using more force, he pushed again; it would not open. Stepping back, he brought his leg up and kicked against the door; it would not open. As he was about to move for a second kick; a cry came from downstairs. "KAITO!" He stopped; the voice sounded very familiar. "KAITO!" Kaito shot down the stairs, almost toppling over towards the bottom yet he gained his balance. The living room door was wide open, light was coming from inside as Kaito rushed in. The room was much like the rest of the house, the curtains tattered, a lack of furnishing, dark and dingy. However, a small pot was boiling over a portable hob. A sleeping bag and rucksack sat next to it with a small, withered dog knelt next to it, quivering. In the middle of all this was the man from before stood there, his knife pointed out to another figure; Isami. "Kaito?!" Isami uttered as Kaito stepped in front of his cousin.

"You know this punk?!" The man yelled. Kaito nodded.

"He's with me, please lower your knife."

"How do I know you're not gonna rush me?" The mas asked, eyes darting between the two. Kaito gave a scowl as he stepped closer.

"Lower your knife, we're not going to do anything." Kaito stated boldly, he looked over to the small dog that was shaking by the hob. Its dark coat was tattered and matted, much like its master. "I swear." Kaito added, his heart was pounding once again as he stared into the eyes of the man. Lowering the knife, the man moved down to the floor as he petted his dog, assuring him everything was okay. Looking back up, he saw that Kaito and Isami were already heading out through the living room door. "I'm sorry about this," Kaito stated in earnest. He closed the door on the man who returned to comforting his small, quivering companion. On the other side of the door, Kaito and Isami were both trying to calm down. Kaito looked fierce as he looked over to Isami. "What the hell are you doing here?!" He yelled.

"K- Kaito, I'm sorry, I-"

"Do you know how stupid that was? You've could've been hurt!" Kaito hissed. Isami looked to the floor.

"I'm sorry."

"Your parents are going to kill me," Kaito sighed. Isami looked up and shook his head.

"I won't say anything Kaito, honestly." Isami stated. Kaito studied his cousin for a moment as he gave another sigh.

"You followed me here?"

"Y- yeah, I saw you sneaking out and well … I've been worried about you. I just … I don't know, you're right … thinking back it was a stupid thing to do." Isami admitted, throwing his hands into his pockets and frowning. Kaito shook his head, placing his hands on Isami's shoulders; the boy looked up.

"It was stupid," Kaito said, bluntly. "I'm glad you're here though," he added. Isami gave a smile, one that Kaito returned. "I need your help," Kaito said as he brought his hands away from his cousin and gestured for him to follow. Isami did and they headed up the stairs.

"What is this place?" Isami wondered as they climbed up the staircase.

"Take a guess," Kaito replied as he came to the top landing.

"Did you used to live here?"

"I did," nodded Kaito. Isami joined him on the landing as Kaito looked over to the door he had attempted to open earlier. "I barely remember this place Isami, I've been in every room aside from that one," Kaito said, nodding towards the door.

"What's in there?" Isami asked, moving towards the door.

"I'm pretty sure I know, the door won't open though, I need your help to break it in." Murmured Kaito.

"Can't we just head back? I don't think this is a good idea," uttered Isami; he was evidently still quite shaken. Kaito shook his head.

"I need to do this." He stated, determined. Isami looked on at his cousin; he felt something akin to admiration. Feeling compelled to oblige, Isami nodded.

"Okay, let's give it a go." The two moved up to the door. Kaito grasped the door knob as Isami grounded himself. In sync, they both barged together against the door. One, two, three times and the door gave weigh, opening stiffly. Kaito forced it back as the door swung around, bashing against the wall. The room wasn't very large. At the opposite end of the room, the window sat; cracked with a few panes of glass missing. The curtains had been torn down. An old, single bed frame sat next to it, battered and broken. There was another wardrobe, similar to the one in the other room, only smaller. Slits went across horizontally, the same as the other. The wall paper was damp and peeled back yet the pattern still remained; a vast sea of clouds and sunlight, giving a cheerful contrast to the dark room.

"I know this place …" Kaito muttered as he stepped inside. Isami followed. Looking over to the bed, Kaito's eyes began to water as a memory hit him.

"Kaito," Maiha uttered. "It's time to close your eyes and go to sleep."

"Do I have to?" The small boy asked.

"All the other boys and girls are going to sleep right now, you should too."

"I can't sleep though," Kaito replied as he brought his covers up to his eyes. His mother gave a warm and gentle smile.

"Would you like me to sing a lullaby sweetie?" She asked. Kaito nodded as Maiha began to sing a small song; one passed from mother to child.

"Kaito?" Isami muttered as Kaito gave a sigh. Though the man did not reply. Looking over to the wardrobe, Kaito's eyes began to grow misty as another memory came to his mind.

Kunio slowly crept around his son's room, avoiding the mess of wooden blocks and small soft toys that littered the floor. "Kaito?" the man whispered. In the wardrobe, Kaito could see his father through the small slits in the wood. Holding his palm to his hand, he remained quiet. A shadow came over him as the doors opened and Kaito dashed out, surprising his father; embracing him. "Found you!" His father laughed, as did Kaito.

"It's my turn to look for you now, right?" Kaito asked in an excited tone. His father gave another laugh as he nodded. "Okay, go hide daddy." Kaito squeaked as he closed his eyes and began to count to ten.

"Are you okay?" Isami asked as Kaito wiped his eyes.

"Y- yeah," Kaito replied. He moved over to the wardrobe and opened it. Inside, going up one side of the wall, was a height chart. His mother and father's names were up there, close to the top. Kaito's was near the bottom; 'Kaito – age 6'. The names were etched into the wooden frame. Looking down, Kaito noticed a small toy; a robot. Kaito's words were caught in his breath; he couldn't speak. Bending down, he picked up the robot and moved over to other side of the room. With his back against the wall, he slowly slid down and sat on the floor, eyes still staring over to the wardrobe. Isami slowly approached as he joined him. "M- my dad … he bought me this toy when I was little." Kaito said as tears came to the corners of his eyes. Isami did not respond. "I- I don't understand how it's here …" Kaito muttered. He grasped the toy in his hands; it only had one arm, yet the rest was intact. Hanging his head, he began to sob. Isami placed a hand on Kaito's shoulder as he spoke.

"I -it's okay Kaito, yo-"

"I forgot everything Isami …everything about this place, about my life with them … how could I do that?!" Kaito wept. "What kind of son am I?" He sobbed, meeting eyes with his cousin. As Isami stared back, he remained quiet, he was speechless. "My mom used to sing me sleep over there," Kaito stated, gesturing towards the broken bed. "She used to sing me a lullaby …" He sighed. "How could I forget that?" He asked, looking to his cousin again. Isami cleared his throat as he spoke.

"Kaito … you're remembering it now … at least that's something." Isami assured him. Kaito thought for a moment as a weak smile emerged across his face.

"For so long I've felt lost Isami … even when I was your age … when I was younger than that. I never truly knew where I came from. I wanted to forget everything, all the sad and painful memories but … through that, I forgot the rest of it; all those fun and happy things." The man gave a sigh again as he wiped his eyes. "Even if I can remember it all, what good is that? They're all still so distant. What do I do?"

"You …" Isami began, he almost went to stop yet he saw Kaito wanting, no, needing an answer. "You have to find more of those fun and happy things Kaito … with the people who are in your life now … and you will." Kaito gave a long, lingering sigh. Then, he nodded as he smiled to Isami.

"Thank you for coming Isami," Kaito said as Isami gave a smile.

"That's what family is for," Isami replied. The cool breeze crept through the broken window as it settled gently over the two of them, soothing them. Kaito gave a nod as he stood up. Reaching in his pockets, he pulled out a set of keys. Moving over to the wardrobe, he placed his back against the wall and brought his outstretched hand up to his head. Measuring himself, he etched a line where his hand had been and wrote on the wall. 'Kaito – age 21'. It sat neatly next to his father's name; Kunio, just below it was his mother's; Maiha. Admiring his work, he gave a smile and looked back over to his cousin.

"Come on," he said. "Let's head back." With a smile, Isami nodded as he got up from the floor. He moved over to exit as Kaito joined him. Isami moved out onto the landing as Kaito peered back inside the room. Giving it one last look, he slowly closed the door; his toy robot still in hand.

Kaito supported Isami as the boy slipped through the gap in the window. The cold air hit him as he gave a shudder. "I can't wait to get home," he stated. Kaito smiled as he began to hoist himself up. Stopping for a moment, he looked back into the house. "What's wrong?" Isami asked. Kaito looked back to his cousin as he spoke.

"Wait here for me, I'll only be a minute." Kaito stated. The toy robot was still in his hands. "Here," Kaito said, passing the toy through. Isami took it.

"Don't be long," Isami replied as Kaito gave a nod. He made his way back through the kitchen. Coming to the living room door, he lingered for a moment, then he gave a knock.

"What do you want?" The man asked in a gruff voice.

"Can I come in for a moment?" Kaito called. There was a slight pause.

"No funny stuff," the man replied.

"Of course," Kaito stated.

"Okay." Kaito slowly opened the door. The man was sat by his hob, stirring the contents of the pan around. His dog sat next to him, its head was resting on the man's lap. Kaito didn't approach, yet he smiled at the man as he spoke.

"Thank you for letting us look around," Kaito said. The man gave a grunt in reply as he scratched behind his dog's ear. "Listen, I just thought you should know … this estate is being torn down in the near future." The man looked up.

"When?"

"I'm not sure," Kaito shrugged. "But I'd get out of here soon." The man studied Kaito for a moment. He gave a nod.

"Thanks for the heads up," he replied. Kaito nodded as he turned to leave. "Kid," the man began. Kaito turned back around. The man fiddled in his pocket as he produced a few notes of money. "Here."

"Keep it," Kaito said, he looked over to the dog that lay on the man's lap.

"You sure?"

"Yeah. Look after yourself." Kaito replied as the man gave another nod. Kaito closed the door behind him as he left the room and made his way through to the kitchen. Isami poked his head through the window as he noticed his cousin.

"You done?"

"Yeah, let's get you home." Kaito replied as he moved over to the window and hoisted himself through. On the other side, Isami handed Kaito the small toy as the two began to walk, taking away to the night as they headed for home.

"Come on Isami!" Kaito yelled as Isami ran up the pitch, darting past Shun and moving on towards Michio. It was the morning of Isami's rugby try-out and the four of them were doing their usual routine.

"Yeah bring it!" Michio grinned as his friend belted towards him, ball in hand. As Isami approached, Michio dashed out, arms stretched and head low, he collided with Isami; yet Isami bested him. Handing his friend off, he slipped by him as Michio met with the ground. "Damn," he cursed. Isami sprinted on, heading towards Kaito. Kaito readied himself; he was not going to ease up. Not this time. Isami went to the left of Kaito, yet Kaito was too quick for him. He shot towards the boy, clipping his side as he followed through, completing the tackle. Isami dropped the ball on contact as Kaito released him. Moving away from his cousin, Isami spat on the floor and swore to himself.

"Don't worry about it Isami," Kaito smiled as he approached. "It was a bloody good run."

"Yeah, not good enough though," Isami sighed. Michio and Shun both approached as Shun held his usual, warm smile.

"You've improved a lot Isami, you should be proud of that."

"He's right," Kaito nodded. Michio, looking on at his disheartened friend, also smiled.

"I seriously struggle against you now man," he stated. Kaito let out a laugh.

"Did I just hear that?" Kaito asked. Michio looked to him.

"What?" Michio uttered. Shun held a smirk on his face.

"You just complimented Isami, I've never heard you do that before." Shun stated. Isami smiled as he looked to Michio.

"You can't take it back either," he stated. Michio rolled his eyes as he made his way down the pitch.

"Right, let's do another," Kaito stated. Shun nodded as he moved into position. Kaito took Isami by the shoulder as he walked him over to side of the pitch.

"What's up?" Isami asked. Kaito let out a sigh as he spoke.

"I have to go soon," he stated. "Your dad says he has a place to take me before we all come to your try-out."

"But what about training?" Isami asked, panicking.

"Don't worry, you're getting there. Besides, you can't rely on me to lead you all the time; once you're at the try-outs I can't help. It'll be good for you."

"I suppose," Isami sighed.

"Look, that last run was great, your best yet. But you eased up coming towards me, why?" Kaito wondered. Isami stared at Kaito as he let out a cough.

"You're a lot bigger than me, I thought it'd be best to just get away." He said. Kaito thought for a moment. Giving a nod, he looked Isami straight in the eyes and spoke in a calm and steady manner.

"I told you before that you're going to have to get used to the idea of getting hurt, remember?"

"Yeah," nodded Isami.

"You've applied yourself on that end so far. Even Michio was impressed," Kaito smirked as Isami laughed. "But, on this run, I want you to run straight at me. Give me everything you have; when I come in for the tackle, try and slip away; use my weight against me. Got it?" Kaito said, looking on. Isami let the thought roll around in his head for a moment. Then, he spoke.

"Slip away … use your weight against you …"

"Just like you did with Michio," Kaito stated. With a determined gaze, Isami nodded. "Right, get set up." Isami nodded as he jogged on to the other side of the pitch. Shun and Michio were in position as Kaito took the rear. "One, two, three … GO!" Kaito shouted as Isami sprinted forward. Shun charged towards his friend as he went low, Isami, noticing this, placed his left hand out; protecting the ball with his right. He caught Shun's arm as he swatted it away, Shun went over his own feet as Isami got by. Now Michio, Kaito thought to himself. Come on Isami, apply yourself. Michio set off early, bringing up his speed as Isami came forward. Michio greeted the boy with a roar as Isami merely danced around him. Michio let out a groan as he completely missed Isami. All that was left was Kaito. Give it your all, Kaito thought as he set off, gaining speed. Don't hold back! As the two forces met, Kaito summoned all his strength and took Isami at the waist. Isami stayed calm as he felt Kaito wrap around him. Leaning into Kaito, he kept up his speed and Kaito was taken under him. Isami swatted him away as he managed to slip out of Kaito's grasp; nearly going to the floor himself. He kept his balance and found his way on towards the try line. In completely disbelief, Isami jumped forward and planted the ball firmly on the ground. Standing, he spun around and let out a cheer.

"I did it!" He roared. Kaito, Michio and Shun all ran over as Kaito embraced his cousin.

"You did it!" Kaito echoed as they began to laugh. Releasing each other; Isami held his beaming smile.

"Well done Isami!" Shun chuckled as Michio smirked.

"Mad skills bro," Michio laughed. Kaito nodded.

"Your damn right!" He bellowed. Isami grinned.

"It runs in the family," he said as the four continued to celebrate; knowing that Isami was finally ready for what lay ahead.

Kaito and Kioshi drove up to a large building. It was in the middle of town, standing above the surrounding structures. As they stepped out of the car, Kaito looked up to the large building. A sign was built on the exterior of the structure; 'Sakumoto Supplies'. Kaito looked over to his uncle. "This is where you work?"

"It is," Kioshi smiled. Kaito had a smirk appear over his face as he spoke.

"Didn't expect our name to be planted on the building," he laughed. Kioshi chuckled.

"I told you your grandfather founded this company, he was never one for subtlety. I wanted to take it down and replace it with something else but … after he passed, I let it stay up; it's been maintained ever since." Kioshi stated. Kaito remained with his eyes focused on the sign. "Let's explore, shall we?" Kioshi asked as Kaito gave a nod; eyes still fixed on the sign.

As they entered the building, Kaito was met with a large reception room; a desk stood beside a large revolving door. Above the door was a large picture of Kioshi and his father; Kusuo. Kusuo looked a proud man; standing next to his son. They looked happy; thought Kaito knew how things were really, he was at least glad that Kioshi still looked back on his father with some happiness; at least enough to keep his picture out for all to see. They approached the front desk as the receptionist gave a smile. "Mr. Sakumoto, sir," she said. "I thought you were off today?"

"I am; though I thought I'd show my nephew around the place." He said gesturing to Kaito who was still admiring the large picture above the doors.

"It's wonderful to meet you," the receptionist smiled as Kaito looked over.

"Kaito, this is our receptionist; Yurika."

"It's nice to meet you too," Kaito nodded. The receptionist returned the nod as she pressed a button on her desk, allowing access through the revolving doors.

"Have fun," she beamed as the two stepped through the doors and began to explore.

After an hour of Kioshi showing Kaito around the Sakumoto Supplies offices, they retired to Kioshi's office where they feasted on food from the vending machines. Kioshi was tilted back in his large desk chair as Kaito studied the room; looking over photos on the walls of his grandfather. Kioshi had his feet up as he placed a sweet wrapper in his mouth; pulling on it, the sweet popped out and he brought the wrapper away from his mouth. Chewing on the sweet he gave a smile. "I spend nearly all my breaks like this," he laughed. Kaito looked over.

"What, eating a mass of sweets?"

"Sure, it's great to slack off every so often," he said with a wink. Kaito laughed at his uncle as he looked back over one of the photos. It was a picture of the three Sakumotos; Kusuo, Kunio and Kioshi. Kusuo was sat in the large desk chair that Kioshi currently sat in. Kunio was stood to the left with a proud smile over his face. Kioshi was stood to the right; he held a smile also, yet his eyes looked distant.

"I like this picture," Kaito smiled. Kioshi nodded.

"Yeah, me too." He said, standing up and moving over to Kaito.

"You look pretty young," Kaito stated.

"I would've been younger than you there; probably around when I found out I couldn't go off to college," he muttered. Giving a sigh, he spoke. "All's well that ends well though; I enjoy my job now and I have a wonderful family to support, what more could I want right?"

"Course," Kaito nodded in agreement. Kioshi smiled as he walked over to large bay window on the other side of the room. It overlooked the town below; towering over the shopping district.

"Kaito," he said as his nephew came to his side. "Emiri and I were talking this morning … we were thinking that, if you wanted to of course, well you could stay here in Kamiosaki." He said. Kaito remained quiet as he looked over the town. Kioshi stared at him, as if trying to sus out what the young man was thinking. Letting out a cough, he spoke again. "Of course, you can stay with us until you're on your feet and can afford your own place; I can give you a job here, one of a high rank at that, after some training of course." Kioshi smiled, "Isami would love for you to stay as well."

"He said that?"

"He did," Kioshi nodded. "That kid looks up to you a lot Kaito." He added. Kaito went quiet as he continued to study the view outside. Kioshi did the same. They stood for a few minutes; taking in the scenery when Kaito spoke.

"I'm not sure Kioshi …"

"I don't expect an answer right here and now," he said. "It's something to think about though." He smiled. Kaito gave a nod. "You will think about it, right?" The man asked. Kaito looked over to his uncle as he smiled.

"I will."

Isami stood on his school's rugby pitch along with several other students. He wore a pair of shorts with high socks and studded boots. He also wore his gym sweater. He wasn't the tallest, he wasn't the biggest but in his eyes; he was determined. Off to the side of the pitch, several students stood along with Shun, Michio, Emiri, Kioshi and Kaito. "How has he been coming along?" Kioshi asked as he looked on at his son.

"Very well," Kaito smiled as he too was focused on Isami.

"Michio and I aren't great players or anything," Shun began as Emiri looked over to her sons' friends. "But we can't even catch him now."

"Yeah," Michio grinned. "He's going to be ace." Emiri gave a warm smile. On the other side of the pitch, several girls had formed in a group. Michio moved over to Kaito as he poked him in the ribs. He looked over to the boy as Michio spoke. "That's Akari," he said, nodding towards the group of girls.

"Isami's crush?" Kaito whispered; hoping not to alert Emiri and Kioshi. Michio nodded. "Which one?"

"Bang in the middle." In the middle of the group of girls stood a slimly built, incredibly pretty girl. She had fair hair and bright, yellow eyes. She was rather petite yet stood at least half a head above her friends. "Can you believe he's trying to pull her?" Michio chuckled as Kaito smirked.

"She's pretty," admitted Kaito.

"She's smoking," Michio stated; correcting the man. Kaito shook his head as he continued to watch his cousin.

"Right guys, thanks for turning out. It's good to see so much interest for the team this year!" A beefy young man said; addressing Isami and the rest of the try-outs, he wore a red band around his arm; the captain. Isami recognised him as a boy from his year, another senior; he had been vice-captain the previous year. "To start off, we'll be running drills, as you know we're looking for five new players this year. You'll be divided into groups so, you four with me," he said pointing to Isami and three other boys. As the captain began to divide everyone into groups; Isami looked over to where the group of girls were standing; as did a few other boys. None of the girls took much notice aside from one; the one in the middle. She gave Isami a smile as he returned it. "Right, come on you four," the captain said as the three boys nodded and followed. Come on Isami, Kaito thought to himself. You've got this. Two girls approached from Kaito's left as he looked over.

"Hey Miiko," Shun smiled as he greeted one of the girls with a peck on her cheek. She stood slightly shorter than Shun. She had a bob of dark hair with green eyes. Her friend was a tad taller than the other, she had dark hair that ran down her back; her eyes were a deep shade of blue.

"How's he doing?" Miiko asked, looking over to Isami.

"He hasn't started yet," Shun replied. "But he's come a long way," he added. Michio approached his friend as he grinned yet again.

"Yo, Miiko," he smiled as the girl greeted him. Ayu, the other girl, raised an eyebrow as she spoke.

"Didn't think you'd be here Michio," she said. Michio shrugged.

"You know me, Ayu. I'm ever so loyal." He smirked. She let out a laugh as the four of them looked on at Isami.

"Kids," Kioshi muttered as Emiri chuckled. Kaito smiled as he looked to the four of them. Then his gaze returned to Isami who's trial had just begun.

Roughly an hour or so had passed and the rugby try-outs were coming to a close. The captain and his team mates had been slowly eliminating potential players as the session had gone on. There were six left; one of which was Isami. "As I said before," the captain stated as he had the six remaining students lined up. "There's five spaces available. We've managed to bring it down to two of you for the last position." He said. He looked over to Isami and a boy that stood next to him. "Sakumoto and Hirota," he stated. "It's down to you." The two boys looked at each other. The other boy; Hirota, was taller than Isami and he gave a look of confidence as if knowing how these trials would end. "I want to do something that's a little unorthodox," the captain said in a deep voice. "You'll both run at a team of four, ball in hand. We'll assess your skill based on how well you receive tackles, dodge them, how your keep up a pace etc. I feel this will be fair since it will come down to basic skill and instinct." Giving a smile, he looked to the two boys. "Does that sound fair?" They both nodded as the captain returned it. "We'll go alphabetical; Hirota, you're up first." They began to set up as they all took positions. Isami moved away from the group to watch. He noticed Akari out of the corner of his eye; she gave another smile. Kaito turned to Kioshi.

"I'm going to over for a minute."

"Good idea, calm him down; he looks nervous." Kioshi replied as Kaito gave a nod. Kaito jogged over to Isami who stood on the side-lines of the pitch.

"You okay?" He asked Isami; the boy turned to him.

"I'm just a little nervous," he admitted. A whistle blew as Hirota took his run. He managed to slip by three of the other players, picking up a lot of speed. He kept his confident manner as he approached the final player; the captain. Attempting to move away from the larger boy, Hirota tried to side-step yet the captain was too quick. He caught Hirota at the last second, pulling him to the ground and completing the tackle.

"Good run," the captain smiled as he hoisted Hirota up from the floor. The boy thanked the captain as he made his way back over to the side-lines. He eyed up Isami, keeping a smirk. Isami looked on as Kaito spoke.

"Just forget all these people Isami; just do it like we practiced."

"Yeah …" Isami sighed. Kaito chuckled.

"Just pretend you're running at Michio again, you'll floor whoever is in front of you." Kaito smirked. Isami looked to his cousin as he gave a chuckle. "You've got this; don't worry. We'll be celebrating tonight." Kaito nodded with a serious look. Isami nodded.

"Sakumoto!" The captain called as Isami stood up to his position. Kaito joined the rest of the spectators.

"How is he?" Shun asked.

"He's fine," Kaito replied as they all looked on. Isami took a few deep breaths as he eyed up the four boys opposite him. Suddenly, a whistle blew and Isami darted forward. He managed the first boy with ease, handing him off. Picking up speed, he moved onto the second. Taking a hold of Isami's shirt, he spun him around yet Isami managed to slip from his grip in the process and pushed on. As he approached the third boy, Isami moved into a full-on sprint. His opponent moved in for the tackle. Isami leaned in as his shoulder collided with the other boy, knocking him back. Isami pushed on, hitting his peak of speed and strength. The captain readied himself with a smile; knowing Isami was not to be taken lightly. As the two forces met, Isami felt the captain's tight grasp around him. He was heavy and dragged Isami down. It was as if time froze and Isami heard Kaito's words in his mind; I want you to run straight at me. Give me everything you have; when I come in for the tackle, try and slip away; use my weight against me. Got it? Isami went down with the other boy as he pushed off of him; allowing the captain to fall to the ground by himself. Springing up from the incomplete tackle, Isami was freed from the boy's grasp as he made his way to the try line. Diving forward, he hammered the ball down – he had done it!

"Well done," the captain said as he shook hands with Isami; he had done so with the other players. "I look forward to having you on the team," he stated as Isami thanked him. Isami made his way over to his friends and family. Emiri dashed forward, hugging her son.

"We knew you could do it!" She beamed. Isami blushed. "Look at you," she tutted. "you're filthy!" She laughed. Kioshi moved over as he nodded to his son.

"Well done kid," he smirked Isami smiled. Shun, Michio, Ayu and Miiko approached. "Don't worry, we won't embarrass you. Come on Emiri," Kioshi said as he and Emiri made their way back over to the side-lines. Isami gave a laugh as his friends came to him.

"Didn't realise you two were coming as well," he said, smiling at the girls.

"We wanted to show our support," Miiko smiled.

"Yeah Isami," Ayu added. "You were brilliant." Michio moved over to Isami and he winked at him.

"Akari was impressed," he whispered. Isami smirked.

"I'm sure," he laughed. Kaito approached the group, standing by Isami. "Guys, this is my cousin, Kaito." He stated as the girls greeted him.

"You were stood with us over there, weren't you?" Ayu laughed as Kaito nodded.

"Well, it's nice to meet you," Miiko smiled as Ayu nodded her head. Kaito returned the sentiment as he looked to Isami.

"You did it," Kaito grinned. Isami let out a laugh as Michio nodded his head, gesturing towards a figure approaching them. It was Akari. Noticing this, Isami walked over to her.

"I can't believe it," Michio whispered to Kaito. Kaito grinned as Isami met Akari; the girl gave a smile.

"You're full of surprises," she chuckled. Isami let out a laugh.

"Really?"

"Well, yeah! When you told me before that you wanted to try out for the team, well I thought you'd know how to play but I didn't think you'd be so good!" She laughed. Isami went red. "I guess this means we'll be seeing a lot more of each other."

"You going to cheer me on?" Isami smirked. Akari rolled her eyes.

"Only if you dedicate your first try to me," she jested, twirling a strand of her hair.

"I'll do my best," Isami nodded as they continued to talk. Over with the rest of the spectators who were chatting about Isami's victory, Kaito kept watch over his cousin. He was overjoyed for Isami.

"You've done well," a voice said from the side of him. Looking over, Kaito saw Shun's smiling face.

"Ah, it was all Isami." Kaito replied. Shun nodded as he spoke.

"How are you doing?" He asked. Kaito gave a smile.

"I'm good," he replied. Shun nodded. Kaito gave a cough. "I'm sorry about the other day; I know it must have been weird."

"It's fine," Shun shrugged. They shared a smile as Kaito let out a laugh.

"You guys seem like a good group," he stated, looking over the youths that stood in front of him.

"We have a good time," Shun nodded. Kaito let out a small sigh as he looked back over to his cousin.

"I'm glad."

"Congratulations Isami!" Emiri, Kioshi and Kaito yelled in unison. They were sat in a restaurant, celebrating after Isami's victory. Isami's face was red as a few other people looked over; yet he smiled all the same.

"We're so proud of you," Emiri beamed as she pinched her son's cheek.

"Thanks mom," he muttered. "It's all down to Kaito though," he said.

"Not at all," Kaito stated, shaking his head. "You pulled through Isami, you were the one on the pitch."

"Right," Kioshi nodded. "Let yourself enjoy it son!" He laughed. "I still can't believe the way you took on some of those guys though! They were huge!" The man bellowed. Kaito gave a laugh.

"They were," he agreed. Isami tried to fight a grin; knowing full well that he had done himself proud. Attempting to divert the attention, Isami looked to his cousin.

"D- do you know what you're doing yet?" He asked. Kaito raised an eyebrow.

"With what?" Kaito wondered. Isami let out a laugh.

"Are you staying with us or not?"

"Isami," Emiri muttered, her son looked over as he shrugged his shoulders.

"All I'm saying is, if you are then you can keep training me!" He laughed. Kaito gave a smile. Letting out a sigh, he spoke.

"I haven't decided yet." He stated. Isami nodded.

"There's absolutely no rush though Kaito, you know that." Kioshi said. Kaito nodded. Thinking for a moment, he cleared his throat. The others looked to him.

"I-" he began yet cut himself short. He caught Emiri out of the corner of his eyes; holding her usual beaming smile. Smiling to himself, he spoke. "I do want to thank you, all three of you." Kaito began, "you've been so good to me since I came here, and I don't know how I can repay you. You've been the family I felt like I needed for a long time." The others shared a smile as Kaito spoke again. "I'll never forget what you've all done for me, it really means so much to me," he said, catching his breath. Emiri wiped a tear from her eye. Isami held his smile as Kioshi brought out his hand and planted it on Kaito's shoulder.

"Kaito," the man started. "No matter what you decide to do; you know you'll always have a home here with us. We can promise you that."

"Thank you," Kaito beamed. Standing, he smiled. "I'll grab the bill, shall I?"

"You don't have to-" Emiri began but Kaito shook his head.

"It's my pleasure," he stated as he went off. Kioshi looked on at his nephew. In that moment, he felt truly happy for his brother's son; he was glad as he knew that Kaito was going to be okay.

Kaito winced as Emiri brought a pair of scissors up to his hair and snipped back a few of the last strands. He was sat on a chair in the kitchen, a towel wrapped around his shoulders; he had finally allowed Emiri to cut his hair, feeling the need for a change. Kioshi stood off to the side, arms folded, leaning against the kitchen counter. Isami was perched on top of it, next to his father. "It's looking good," Kioshi stated.

"It isn't too short?" Kaito muttered. Kioshi let out a laugh. Emiri tutted as Kaito met her eyes.

"How's about having a little bit of faith in your aunt Kaito?" She suggested with a smirk. Kaito grinned. After cleaning up the sides and his fringe, she stepped back and assessed her work.

"Very smart," Kioshi nodded. "Right Isami?"

"Yeah, looking good," he smiled. Kaito smiled as Emiri brought out an electric trimmer.

"Time for the beard," she beamed. Kaito's eyes widened.

"Not-"

"Not too short?" Emiri asked rhetorically. Kaito grinned as he nodded. Emiri laughed as she went about trimming his beard. After a few minutes, she had cut it back to about the size of a grain of rice. It was still thick stubble, yet it was not as wiry and shaggy as it had been. It also held a nice shape, emphasizing Kaito's jaw. Emiri brought out a mirror, showing Kaito the finished product. Kaito had to fight back a smile; even he had to admit that he looked good. "Very handsome," Emiri stated.

"Yeah," Isami laughed.

"That jaw line makes you look tough!" Kioshi chuckled, giving a thumbs up.

"If I was a few years younger," Emiri sighed, gazing on at Kaito. Kioshi went a shade darker.

"What's that supposed to mean!" He bellowed in jest, Emiri brushed him off. Kaito and Isami's eyes met as they both shared a smile.

The night air was crisp as Kaito and his Uncle Kioshi sat outside on the chairs in the back garden. The moon stood tall above them; it was nearing midnight. They had spent the past few hours outside, talking about memories of old. Emiri and Isami had both gone to bed. Kioshi brought a cigar; one that he had been sharing with Kaito, up to his mouth as he puffed on it. Bringing it down, he let out the smoke and passed the cigar over to Kaito. Taking it form his uncle, Kaito repeated the process. "Nothing like a smoke to end the day, right?"

"I've never really smoke cigars before," admitted Kaito. "Classy," he grinned. Kioshi nodded.

"Your grandfather used to smoke these to no end." He laughed. He looked over his nephew as Kaito took the smoke into his mouth. Hanging his head back, Kaito released.

"It's so peaceful here," he smiled; eyes shut. Kioshi leant down to his left as he pulled up a small bag.

"Here," he said, handing it to Kaito. Kaito looked over, trading the cigar for the bag, Kaito looked inside and pulled out the contents. It was one of the photo albums from before. "I've sorted through a lot of them; most of the ones in there are of you and your parents; your gran and grandfather of course. Kaito smiled as he flicked through the album. "Don't worry," Kioshi added. "There's plenty of the rest of us." He laughed. Kaito landed on a photo; it was similar to one he had seen many years ago. His father and mother were stood next to a railing; Kaito was on his father's shoulders. Behind them was a vast, outstretched ocean.

"See this place?" Kaito asked, showing the photo.

"That's a fair bit away," Kioshi replied. "In fact, I think it's just in between here and Hikarizaka."

"I remember … My friends and I went there for my birthday a while back. I had no idea where we were going; one of my friends had set it up. Turns out she used to go there with her parents a lot; as did I."

"That's a coincidence," Kioshi smiled. Kaito smirked.

"Synchronicity." Kaito stated. Kioshi nodded.

"Your gran used to say that to me; that people who were meant to meet and be together always would end up as so; fate and all that." He stated, taking another pull on the cigar. Kaito nodded. Letting out a cloud of smoke, Kioshi smiled. "Everything happens for a reason."

"Kioshi," Kaito began as his uncle looked over. "I know this is out of the blue; but it's something that's been on my mind."

"Shoot."

"When I first met Isami, he and his friends told me about a day, a while back, when light filled the sky and snow began to fall heavy." Kioshi nodded.

"Yeah, it was a freak snow storm … though, people around here thought it was something else." He stated. "Who knows." He said with a shrug.

"I've seen things similar in the past though," Kaito stated, shuffling in his chair. "I- I dunno … just things out of the corner of my eye. As if there's a presence with me … a light."

"Your Gran used to say things like that." Kioshi said as Kaito looked on, intently. "She told me that the light would appear to people who were pure and their wish would be granted." He shrugged. "An old fairy-tale I'm sure."

"Still …" Kaito sighed. Kioshi studied him for a moment, he wanted to ask Kaito something … something he had been worried about.

"Kaito," he began as Kaito looked up. "How are you? In yourself I mean." Kaito let out another sigh as he paused. Thinking for a moment, he looked to his uncle.

"I know I haven't been very open with what's happened," Kaito stated. "It's been very difficult, for a long time."

"I don't want to push kid," Kioshi said with a smile. "I'm just worried." Kaito nodded as he looked up to the sky.

"After Gran died … I went into a deep pit; it was something I couldn't bring myself out of." Kaito began. "It took a friend; someone really dear to me; Ushio … it took her to bring me out of it. Being honest, all my friends stuck by me and supported me."

"That's good to hear," Kioshi smiled.

"As I was coming to terms with everything though, something happened to my friend; Juni." Kaito took a deep breath as he composed himself. "A kid we knew, one who would always bully Juni, pushed Juni so hard. He was a bad person Kioshi, an awful person." Kaito said, going quiet. Kioshi did not speak, he looked on. "Juni and I were walking through these old alley ways at night and this kid came out of nowhere with a couple of his friends. They antagonised us, as they always did. Right then, I thought it was just the usual crap they always did … but suddenly one of them hit me around the head with something hard and I fell, I was out cold." Kaito voice began to shake as he spoke. "As I came to … Juni was there … lying on the floor, crying out in pain. He- He'd been stabbed … and those bastards had run away; cowards." Kaito sighed as he breathed deeply. "Juni died, right there in my arms … it broke me Kioshi," Kaito said, looking to the man, tears forming in his eyes. "I just … switched off. Juni was special and because of my … my stupid ego, thinking I could take on those guys and we would be fine … Juni paid the price. I tried though, I really tried to stay strong but … after my friends left for college; I became isolated. My friend … Takeshi, someone I considered my brother … He was the only one with me and because of that … I pulled him down … I was selfish Kioshi, for three years Takeshi tried to help me, and I resented him for it; as if I was at the point where I didn't want help … I wasn't worth it." Kaito began to tear up, Kioshi still looked on. "Then my friends returned from college … I … I was fucking awful. I ruined what should have been a happy time for us all and … I dragged everyone down yet again; to the point where Takeshi confronted me. On a night where I nearly drove myself to … I nearly did to a person what those cowards did to Juni." Kaito couldn't hold it any longer. Tears streamed down his face as he wept and wrenched. Kioshi got off his chair and knelt next to Kaito. Through the tears, Kaito was able to mutter his next few words. "Takeshi was finished with me, I broke our friendship like it was nothing!" Kaito continued to cry. "It should have been me, Kioshi!"

"Kaito," Kioshi uttered as Kaito continued to cry, "Kaito!" Kioshi said again, taking his nephew's hands in his. Kaito looked to his uncle's face. Tears were in Kioshi's eyes as he spoke. "I was the same with your father … I drove your parents away from here," he sniffed. "All your father wanted, was to be there for his family. For your mother and for you." Kioshi grew angry with himself. "All that mattered to me was pride, heritage and getting what I thought I deserved." He huffed. Looking Kaito straight in the eyes, he spoke with honesty. "There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about your father Kaito. That I don't think that it should've been me in his place." Kioshi then held a weak smile. "I promise you though, it does get better."

"How do you cope Kioshi?" Kaito uttered, catching his breath.

"You … You learn to live with it."

"How?"

"Kaito, you need to find something … a- a reason for you to keep going day after day." He began. "My family is what has held me in place for so long, I owe them so much." Kioshi smiled, releasing Kaito's hands, he wiped his eyes. "You see, that's how I cope Kaito because I have something to live for, I'm here to do my best by Emiri and by Isami … and now, by you."

"How am I supposed to find something like that?" Kaito asked, eyes heavy.

"It starts with figuring out who you are, deep down." Stated Kioshi. "It was a good decision to come here Kaito, knowing where you began, looking back to your roots, it can help in moving forward with yourself. You have a strong foundation, I have no doubt you'll find your footing again." Kioshi smiled. Kaito took a few breaths, steadying himself. Then he spoke.

"I don't know if I can do it," admitted Kaito.

"It's okay Kaito, you'll get there."

"I- I am sorry about this," Kaito sighed.

"No, don't you ever apologise for feeling the way you do." Kioshi assured him. "If your ever feel like you can't go on or if you just want someone to talk to, come to me okay? Promise me right now."

"I- I promise."

"Good. You're a fucking good person Kaito, you've done so well by Isami. Emiri loves you to pieces and you make me proud to be your uncle. So, don't ever and I mean ever think otherwise, okay?"

"Okay." Kaito nodded as a smile came across his face.

"You're going to be okay kid, I know it." Kioshi said with a nod. Kaito returned the nod as he spoke.

"Thank you Kioshi," he smiled. Thinking for a moment, Kaito spoke. "You know, for the longest time I never felt like I could have a family again. Even one of my own, you know, a wife and child? It's something I never even considered for myself. Yet, meeting you all and seeing you together, so happy and supportive … I think it's something I want, eventually."

"That's a good thing to hope for Kaito," Kioshi said, giving a supportive smile. Kaito nodded.

"Kioshi, I … I think I'm ready."

"For what?" Kioshi asked. Kaito gave a smile.

"To go home."

The sun shone high in the sky as Kaito stood outside the train station; his duffle bag was swung over his shoulder. In front of him stood Kioshi, Emiri and Isami. They were saying their good byes. "Now you're sure about this?" Emiri asked, fretting over her nephew.

"I am," Kaito nodded. "I think it's the right thing to do."

"Come here," Emiri croaked as she and Kaito embraced. "Don't be a stranger, you hear me?" She whispered in Kaito's ear. Kaito nodded as they came a part.

"I'll keep in touch."

"Make sure you do," she said, giving him a peck on the cheek. Kaito looked over to his cousin, he was quiet.

"You've got my number, right?" Asked Kaito. Isami gave a nod. "Don't worry man," Kaito added. He gestured for Isami to approach him, he did. The two shared a short hug. Kaito spoke quietly to the boy. "Let me know how it goes with that cheerleader, okay?" He chuckled. Isami gave a smile as he nodded.

"I'll miss you Kaito," he said. Kaito nodded again.

"Make the most out of your last year in school Isami, it'll be over before you know it. You've got some good friends, keep them close."

"I will," Isami replied, smiling.

"Make sure to tell Shun and Michio I said bye."

"I will," repeated Isami. Kioshi looked to his wife as he spoke.

"Mind giving us a moment?" He asked. Emiri nodded as she and Isami moved over to the side, out of ear shot of the two men. Kioshi and Kaito stood by each other. "Remember what I said last night?" Kioshi asked. Kaito nodded. "If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to reach out to me; any of us."

"I will," Kaito vowed. Kioshi let out a cough as he reached into his jacket pocket.

"I have something for you," he said. Pulling out a small, padded box, he handed it to Kaito. Taking it from the man, Kaito looked up. "Open it." Kaito did as he was told, opening the lid, Kaito saw a smart watch sat inside. It had a silver face, connected to a leather strap which was neatly stitched.

"Is this?.. " Kaito asked, going quiet.

"It is," Kioshi nodded, smiling. Kaito looked up to his uncle.

"Kioshi, I can't take this."

"It's yours, it was always meant to be yours." The man replied.

"What about Isami?" Kaito asked.

"I've already spoken with him, he agrees that you should have it." Kioshi replied. Kaito looked over to his cousin. He was stood with Emiri looking on at the two of them. Isami gave Kaito an approving nod as Kaito smiled. Looking back to Kioshi, he spoke.

"I'll take good care of it."

"I know you will." Kioshi smiled. Kaito looked from the watch and back to his uncle. "Put it on then," Kioshi said. Kaito grinned as he too the watch from its box and slipped it on his wrist. Tightening the band, he held it out. "Perfect." Kioshi said as Kaito smiled. He placed the box into his duffle bag. Looking back to his uncle, he began to well up.

"K- Kioshi," Kaito uttered. "My dad I … well, I know he …"

"Yeah," Kioshi nodded. "I know. I've made my peace with it Kaito," Kioshi beamed. Kaito nodded. Then, he embraced his uncle, they held each other tight as Kioshi gave a sniff. Releasing each other they both smiled. "Go on," Kioshi laughed, fighting back a few tears, "get going." Kaito nodded as Kioshi gestured for Isami and Emiri to join them.

"Looks good," Isami stated as he joined them.

"Thank you," Kaito sighed as he smiled. Emiri wiped her eyes as he spoke.

"Kaito, are you heading straight home?" Kaito shook his head.

"There's a few places I want to go on my way back, I'll probably spend a few days or so travelling around." He stated.

"Sounds good," Kioshi said, "get your head clear, see some sights." He chuckled. Kaito nodded.

"Let me know what you're doing this Christmas," Emiri smiled. "We'd love to have you."

"I'd like that," Kaito nodded. "I'll be sure to let you know." Giving a sigh, he looked over to train station. Then, he looked back to his family. "I'll see you soon," he smiled as they all smiled back. With that, Kaito turned and made his way inside the train station, only stopping to wave back at his relatives; they did the same. Kaito entered the train station; ready to move on to what would come his way next.

~* A Few Days Later *~

Kaito, duffle bag in hand, made his way up the banking of a hill, a rugged, cobbled pathway stretched up it. As he came to the top, he was met with a gorgeous view. A vast ocean sat in front of him on the other side of a cliff, separated only by a railing. To the right of him sat a bench. Kaito lowered his bag down next to it. Taking a seat, he looked out. The sun reflected off the sea, filling Kaito with a warm sensation. Checking his watch, he saw it to be late on; approaching sunset. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a photo. It was of this very view; with three figures on it. Kunio, Maiha and Kaito. Kaito gave a smile as a cool breeze flew over him, soothing him. Looking out, he thought back to that day; finally, his memories were not so distant, they were clearer. To the side of Kaito, with its head sticking out of his duffle bag, was a gift he had received from his father; a small … withered and old, toy robot.

"A new light is born," the boy stated as he, and the girl that accompanied him, still looked out over that distant and empty horizon. A single orb of light had revealed itself and began to float away.

"It will join the others."

"Not this one," he replied, as the orb of light flew away from them, across the plains, it grew smaller and smaller. The girl looked to him.

"Then where will it go?" She wondered. The boy thought for a moment.

"I think it will wait."

"For what?"

"For him," he whispered. "He may need it."

"Where is he now?"

"I'm not sure … He's distant … as if he no longer holds weight over himself, I can feel it fading, whatever it is that keeps him here ..."

"Can't you see him?"

"Not anymore."

"Will you keep watch for him?"

"Of course," he said. Giving a sigh, the boy looked up to the bright sky above. "… Always."
