After 5 years of being married to Percy, Annabeth dies during childbirth giving him a daughter. Percy struggles to be a single parent, more so than most because Athena blames him for Annabeth's death and throws every challenge she possibly can his way. From losing his job at a world-renown aquarium to setting up his mother's death, Athena makes his life a living hell. This is no place for a little girl to grow up and Percy knows this. So he goes the only person he can for help: Artemis. He begs her to take his daughter in and explains how Athena has taken out her grief over Annabeth's death on him, and in turn, Annabeth's daughter. Artemis accepts and Percy is forced to give his daughter up for her own safety. He dies less than a day later at Athena's hand. Artemis comes to realize that she actually liked Percy (in a platonic way) and that her family is nothing like she thought it was. She starts a civil war on Olympus to make it a better place.
