Before I start, I remind you that this story takes place in an AU in the year 2020 instead of 2007, so no dinosaurs, no time traveling (everyone from the future is in the present), no aliens (they are humans here). Please, be respectful and understand that I've only taken the characters and a few ideas from the show itself.
My friends CarnotaurusMan and TheCrazyRavenclaw have had a hard time lately, so I dedicated to finally finish this story for them.
This story is heavily affected by my recent obsession with the Rocketshipping; combine that with such an amazing song as Partners in Crime by Set It Off, Person of Interest series, and the best Dinosaur King non-canon couple and you get the best idea you can!
I really hope you'll like this.

Life can be cruel for no reason. Even children can be met with the worst of fates, being separated from their families either by strangers or their own parents. Meeting with tough circumstances, two of these lonely children saw no other choice than to turn to the way of crime to get themselves what they need to survive. As unbelievable as it seems these two are tied together by fate. Side by side, crime after crime, with their street skills combined, these two are going to become the greatest masterminds the world's ever known!

A shadow of a tall figure moved at incredible speed through a dark alley filled with wanted posters. Two faces on the posters were very hard to recognize; their eyes were covered by shadows while mischievous smirk and grin were painted on the faces of a black-haired man and a blonde woman; a criminal duo that's been terrorizing Sanjo City for years; the Hanzai Couple.
In the next second, the tall figure was gone, hiding in the shadows. The tall figure was unnoticed by an eye because of his black clothes. Even if he was spotted, he wouldn't be identified; a mask covering his mouth, tight gloves covering his hands, high-tech sunglasses hiding his eyes.
He was watching a jewelry store, his sunglasses showing him a countdown, and several objects placed around the store.
He chuckled darkly. "Time's up, darling."
"Ready, dear?" a female voice sounded from an earphone he was wearing.
"As always."
As soon as he said that, several explosions came out of the store, filling it with smoke. He rushed in. He had no problem moving fast and unnoticed; this wasn't his first robbery.
With a swift of his hands, he snatched golden necklaces, diamond rings, silver earrings, and quickly escaped the store while the smoke was still around. When the smoke fell down, he was nowhere to be found.
He had his shortcut through a manhole. He was running through a sewer and at the first turn to left, he hit the 24th brick and a hidden door opened. He went inside and the door closed behind him.
It was a small room with everything needed for survival, a bed with a place for two, a tiny kitchen, a bathroom that was behind another door. Then there was a desk with a computer and a monitor; a blonde woman with glasses was sitting at the computer. She turned to him. "Success?"
"As always, Angel." He uncovered his face, smirking. He walked over to her and kissed her cheek.
She returned the peck and snatched one necklace from him, examining it. "These are going to do us so good once we sell them," she said.
He hugged her from behind and took the necklace from her, wrapping the golden necklace around her neck. "But this one is going to do you even better." He pushed her wavy hair away, pinned the necklace together, and kissed the back of her neck.
"You know we can't keep any of these, Zander," she told him coldly.
He frowned sadly.
"The buyer said the exact amount; we cannot take anything more than their money or we get shot right between the eyes." She pulled away and turned to face him.
"But, Angel, we're the Hanzai Couple! Why should we fear others?" Zander complained, "everyone is supposed to respect us; that's what we've been working towards this whole time."
"I refuse to get involved with another yakuza clan," Angel told him, holding her hand to her scarred throat.
"Angel..." He stroked her cheek. She was right; messing with yakuza would result in slits in their throats. "I won't let anything happen to you. ...not again."
She leaned into his touch, holding his hand, closing her amethyst eyes.
Memories that would terrify anyone but her flashed in front of her eyes. Her earliest memory is her waking up in a car of a stranger, she was just a 9-year-old child when they kidnapped her. She managed to get escape from them. On the streets of Sanjo, she met a simple thief trained by his own experience—he was abandoned by his mother as a kid, leaving him on streets by himself.
He gave her her name and helped her when she needed him. They had no one else than themselves; his family left him and she didn't even remember hers due to a blow in the head from her kidnapper.
Throughout the years they've faced several criminals that wandered into their territory and got in their way; some of them were handy and taught Zander and Angel a few tricks as an exchange for some jewels they stole.
The Hanzai Couple aims towards being respected by others; they want to be given a choice of a normal life that was taken away from them. Threatening people into giving it to them was the only way they knew.
The Hanzai Couple, Japan's biggest threat!
"Even the worst criminals are going to fear us one day, Angel, that's a promise," Zander told her, kissing her head.
Angel smiled softly and took off the necklace. "I'll contact the buyer; are you able to proceed with another mission?"
"Whatever you wish, my love," he replied.
"I'm gonna need you to get me some electronics for our plan."
"That won't be a problem; you know me."
She kissed his cheek. "I do, that's why I love you." She took a piece of paper and wrote down everything she needs with the exact required parameters. "I need several cell phones and a laptop with a long duration battery and a good CPU."
Zander frowned at the paper as she gave it to him. "I have no clue how these are going to help you, but I guess I'm gonna trust you." He grinned at her goofily, shrugging his shoulders.
"Just come back to me," she demanded.
"I will." He pecked her lips. "I go get ready."
—
It was a lovely afternoon as a group of three preteens was walking through downtown, a brunet and a blond boy and a pink-haired girl.
The girl named Zoe had her amethyst eyes locked on the screen of her phone, simply scrolling through social media, which infuriated her brunet friend Max.
"Do you really have to?" he asked her, glaring at her.
"Yes. It isn't my fault that you've drowned your phone," Zoe told him.
"But you don't have to tease me like this with yours!" Max groaned at her, "just wait until I get a new in the store."
She rolled her eyes and put her phone in her pocket. "Fine..."
"You two shouldn't be that addicted to your smartphones, you know?" the blond named Rex said, crossing his arms, "they all listen to our every single word and collect all our data just to have us constantly in check and use our deepest darkest secrets against us."
"Dude!" his friends snapped at him, just disturbed by his conspiracies.
"Stay to your flip phone if you believe that theory, but I gotta play my Jurassic World Alive," Max exclaimed.
Rex frowned and at that moment Zoe pulled out her phone again due to a notification.
"You are unbelievable," Rex commented.
"Hey, this is important!" Zoe pouted. "It's a news article about a robbery of a jewelry store not that far from here."
"The Hanzai again?" Max wondered.
"It says they've used some kind of smoke bombs as a distraction; not a single camera spotted the culprit running away," Zoe read.
"That sounds like them," Rex pointed out, "it is incredible they manage to stay unidentified by anyone. And this was just the basic one of their crimes."
"If this goes on someone we know will get involved and hurt," Max growled, "we can't let that happen."
"What do you expect three kids to do?" Zoe asked him, "he is apparently the most stealthy person the police have ever seen and she is a genius; she even hacked the whole city for five hours once. We can't stop criminals like that."
"I can't just watch them terrorize the city..." Max sighed.
"You can start with your hero carrier after you learn not to accidentally destroy your own belongings that often," Rex told him, "how long have you been saving for this phone anyway?"
"Several months maybe...? I expected that to happen, so when I drowned the last one yesterday, I've already had the money," Max chuckled as they walked into the electronics store.
In an alley across the street, Zander was watching the store in his disguise. "I'm ready, darling," he said.
"All security is turned off; go get them," he heard his love in the earphone.
—
Angel tapped her earphone twice to mute it as she walked to the meeting place. She approached four men and a woman, handing a box with the jewelry to them.
"Oh, Angel Hanzai by herself. Where is your man?" the leader asked her.
"He's on a mission for another project," she replied coldly, "it doesn't matter, does it?"
"Right. The important thing is if you gave us what we wanted." He gave the box to the woman by his side and she opened it, counting the jewels.
"You can rely on our work as always," Angel told him confidently, but that security was quickly swiped away by the woman with the box.
"One ring is missing," she said.
"There's no way."
"So, you've tried to scam us," the leader snapped at Angel.
"What? No, we'd never do that!" she objected, "Zander stole everything you asked for."
The leader snapped his fingers and one of his men pulled out a knife, holding it to her throat, while the other one pointed a gun at her back.
"Then where is the ring?" they asked.
"I don't know," Angel replied.
"Don't lie to me," the leader growled, his usual almost greenish face turning red in anger.
"I am not a liar," she told him.
The only man left walked over to her and stroke her cheek. "If you have no clue then he must have it. Where is he?"
Angel glanced away from him and stayed silent.
"Answer."
The knife was pressed against her throat, however, that didn't seem to phase her at all.
"Keep your hands off me," Angel spat at him.
The man only smirked and reached behind her ear, grabbing her earphone. She would try to take it back if she wasn't sandwiched between a pistol and a knife. "That's all I need to find him," he said calmly.
"Excellent, Seth. Locate him, then you and Sheer will get that ring even if it costs his life."
The man with the earphone and the woman nodded and left.
She knew that Zander is basically dead; the two sent out were skilled enough—she is a professional assassin nicknamed Hasami the kunoichi since her abilities are comparable to ninjas; he is a spy for his gang inside of the police.
"There's no need to kill him for one stupid ring," Angel exclaimed.
"Do you even know how much an amethyst ring like that costs?" the leader asked her, "it can sell for even more than you're demanding." Suddenly, his serious tone change to more flamboyant. "Not to mention how beautiful that ring would look on my hand!"
He kept this kind of speech for a while.
—
Zander was still waiting for the opportunity to sneak in. When not many people and cars passed by, he decided to strike. He threw several smoke bombs in front of him and ran inside the store.
He heard people panicking as he grabbed what they needed and put it in a bag. He headed out as the smoke started to fall, but when he got to the exit some kind of a shuriken cut his shoulder and two masked figures blocked the door.
"Where do you think you're going, Hanzai?" the man asked.
"You have something that belongs to us," the woman said.
—
Angel had no time to waste, but her situation seemed impossible to solve. She had a chance to escape since the boss seemed too focused on himself at the time.
"So, which one of you is his favorite?" she asked.
"The two he just sent to kill your partner," the man with the knife replied.
"Oh, I see. I should have expected that. And which one of you two is a bigger failure?"
"Why are you asking?" the big guy with the gun wondered.
Angel shrugged. "I am stuck between a gorilla with a gun and a twig with a knife unable to escape. Gotta make the time fly."
"Fair enough."
"Then which one of you is it? I'm sure it's the dumb one of you and there's always the dumb one."
"Then that's Gavro," the slim man said.
"Are you saying that I'm dumb?" the one with the gun questioned.
"What? No, I would never," the other one chuckled sarcastically.
"Okay..."
Angel rolled her eyes and turned to the guy behind her. "Just between you and me, he's saying exactly that."
"Liar!" He glared at his colleague.
"I was being sarcastic! You would realize if you didn't share a brain cell with a rock!"
And that was it; that was all Angel needed, a fight between the two. As they were distracted, she grabbed the knife and snatched it from the slim man, slashing him across the chest to get herself more time. She then turned around, slicing the other guy's hand to make him drop the gun.
She picked the pistol up, sneaked from between the two. When the two of them and their boss got a hold of themselves she shot all three of them in the left knee; they dropped to the ground.
Without another glance at them, she ran away.
—
The store was clear of the smoke and the two assassins started shooting. Zander managed to hide in an alley; it was actually the same alley as the three preteens hid in.
"Come out, Hanzai," Sheer called for him.
Hearing that, the preteens glared at Zander. "You're from the Hanzai Couple?"
He frowned at them. "You're in the middle of a shooting in a store I've just robbed; is that really what you have to say?"
"In the middle of a shooting that happens because of you," Zoe yelled at him quietly.
At first, he just stared, as if he's seen those eyes before... "Keep your mouth shut, missy, before those two find you and murder you." He threw her one of his smoke bombs. "Use this to get out of here."
"You're helping us...? Why?" Rex wondered.
"I don't want kids to die because of me," Zander explained.
The blond nodded and stood up. "Let's get out of here."
"Wait!" Max stopped him. "We have an opportunity to unmask one of the Hanzai Couple; we can't just leave."
"Now's not the time to play a hero," Zoe snapped at him.
"But this is the lifetime opportunity!"
That brunet was so annoying and just plain dumb... "Kid, I swear to my angel that I'm soon gonna throw you out of here myself-" Zander suddenly stopped as he heard a shot and knocked the kids to the ground. A bullet flew right above their heads through a shelf. "This is no place for you to be at; get out!"
The preteens obeyed him a made their way out. Zoe tossed the bomb to the exit, letting out smoke to blind the assassins near it. Almost out, Zoe ran into someone; she couldn't see them clearly even if the smoke was nearly gone because of their disguise.
The person couldn't get her eyes off hers; they seemed so familiar. Another shot made them finally move.
Back inside, Zander faced Seth unarmed while Sheer got to him from behind.
"We're not going to let you get away with that ring."
"Boss even allowed us to kill you and there's no way we're going to pass that opportunity."
However, before they could do anything, two shots sounded and they both dropped down, their knees bleeding.
"Touch my man again and the next bullets go straight through your brains," a calm female voice said and a masked figure walked over to Zander.
"Darling..." he breathed, amazed while also terrified by her.
"Grab what you came here for and let's get out of here," she told him.
They still had some smoke bombs left and used them to escape.
Once back in their base, they took off their disguises.
"You aren't hurt, are you?" Zander worried and immediately received a slap on the face.
"You're asking if I am not hurt?! Seriously?!" Angel yelled at him, "are you okay? What the hell were you thinking?!"
"Angel..."
"Where is it?" she asked him in a calmer voice, although, it got more aggressive when he didn't answer, "where is the ring?!"
"Angel, my love, I had no idea the buyer would care for one ring," Zander tried to explain to her, but she wasn't having it.
"He said the exact amount. Each of those jewels costs more yen than we've ever earned the legal way; of course, he cares about that ring! I had a knife to my throat and a gun to my back, you were surrounded by our buyer's best henchmen, not to mention that we lost all the money from the rest of the jewels."
"I wasn't thinking straight..."
"Obviously. I'll ask you one more time; where is that ring?"
Zander sighed and pulled out the white ring with an amethyst stone in it, slowly falling down to one knee. "Angel..."
The blonde totally lost her breath by his act.
"My whole life, I've only had you by my side and I want it to stay like that until death tears us apart."
"That could have happened today," she reminded him.
"I know and I'm deeply sorry for that. When I saw this ring, I immediately thought of the love of my life, of your beautiful eyes. I just couldn't help myself-"
"Idiot..." Angel sobbed, tears running down her cheeks, "just... just say it already...!"
He chuckled softly. "Will you marry me?"
She nodded and hugged him. "...That doesn't mean I forgive you for what you've caused."
"I am aware."
"Now's not the time for celebrations," Angel said, "if we hurry up, we can still catch up with people at the electronics store."
"There must be a lot of people now..."
"And the bigger the audience, the bigger the impact."
"Are you able to construct them in time?" he wondered.
"If you got me the right stuff."
—
About an hour and a half passed since the shooting, the police asked the preteens and other witnesses when the kids' parents arrived at the crime scene worried sick.
The situation was starting to settle when another wave of smoke surrounded the crowd. Panic was the first thing that hit them; the culprits returned to the scene of the crime.
"My love, what are those sounds I hear?" a female voice said as the smoke began to fall.
"I know those sounds, they must be voices of fear," a male voice replied, their undisguised figures revealed.
The crowd watched the Hanzai Couple's real faces for the very first time. On the left was a blonde woman with purple eyes behind glasses and one the right was a tall black-haired man with brown eyes.
"We present to you the Hanazai Couple in all our beauty," they said at once. Their introduction was enough to get all guns pointed at them.
"There's no need for violence, is there?" Angel questioned innocently, "not yet at least."
"We've come to bargain with the people of this city, so put your weapons down, please," Zander demanded politely, however, nobody obeyed.
"I was afraid of that," Angel whispered and pulled out a small device, pressing a button.
A near building under construction blew up!
People could only stare...
Angel smirked. "Don't worry, nobody was inside. That was just a warning. Another bomb is in the sewers right below your feet; put all your guns down now," she ordered and people obeyed this time. "Good."
"We want everyone to see what the Hanzai Couple is capable of; no one can stand in our way," Zander started, "we demand to be proven not guilty from any of our crimes and given a fair chance of living a normal life. We're sure you're wondering why have we even started this life and let it go that far if we want to abound it. We did not have a choice. I was rejected by my own mother when I was 6; forgotten about by the woman that gave me life! I've lived on the streets ever since, forced into crime after crime to survive, doing horrible things to intimidate others just to be left alone!"
"Life wanted us to get here," Angel continued, "to be together. Why else would I be kidnapped from a loving family I can't even remember?"
Kidnapped...?
Just that one sentence alone made a married couple among the crowd, Zoe's parents, think. There was no way it could be it...
Angel kept talking when the couple decided to try their theory out and said that name loud enough for her to hear. "Reese?"
Angel hasn't remembered hearing that name before, but just as it was said, her blood froze and her eyes widened. The eyes of the woman were familiar. She couldn't describe what was happening to her...
Taking advantage of Angel's space out, a young, fat, and a very insecure lavender-haired policeman pulled the trigger of his gun and shot Angel's right shoulder, making her drop the device that would otherwise activate the bomb beneath them.
The blonde cried in pain and her partner took her in his arms. "Angel! Darling, are you conscious?"
She looked at him. "...proceed with... the plan..."
"No!"
"...forget about me...and continue..."
"No, I won't risk losing you!" He used another smoke bomb for their escape, carrying Angel to the base.
He laid her on the bed and got the first aid kit, sewing her fresh wound after taking the bullet out. She whined a lot throughout that. "I'm sorry, my love." He could listen to her.
"And done! How are you feeling?" he asked her, stroking her hair.
She hardly sat up, holding onto her wound. "Reese..."
"Huh?"
"Reese; that's what a couple in that crowd said... It woke something in me...I don't know what happened to me... or who they were..."
Zander frowned thoughtfully and took a tiny camera from Angel's glasses, plugging it into the computer and scanning everyone on the record.
"You should have continued..." Angel told him.
"If I did, you'd bleed out. "
"But the plan-"
"No plan is as important as you!" he snapped at her, "I can't lose you... You have no clue how scared I was."
"I do..." she corrected him.
He bit his lip and stayed silent until the identity of the couple and most importantly the Reese they've mentioned was found. "That couple is the Drakes, parents of the girl that was in the store with her friends. Though they used to have another daughter... I think you should go check this out, darling..."
Angel got up and walked over to the computer screen. It said that their daughter Reese Drake was kidnapped at the age of 9 and was never found; she'd be about 23 now, just like Angel. And then she noticed Reese's photo...
The world stopped for a few moments as Angel watched the picture of herself at the age her earliest memories come from.
"Reese Drake... That's who I am...?" Angel mumbled in disbelief, "after all this time..."
"You have a beautiful name, my love," Zander told her and hugged her.
"I've finally found them... and I've just shown them what monster I've become."
"It wasn't your choice to become this. To survive in this, you have to be a bad guy."
She pushed him away gently. "I want them to know..."
He stroked her golden hair. "As you wish."
—
Sun was slowly setting when the Drakes came back home, still traumatized from the events. There was a note taped to the front door. They took it off and read it. The note seemed strange and the message on it seemed even stranger.
"It's been a while... I know you might not want to have anything to do with me after everything I've done. I won't try justifying my actions; I only want you to know that none of it is your fault. I am sure you've raised me well, even if I can't remember any of that... I swear that if I could, I would meet you in person, however, I can't risk getting caught after our plan failed; I can't leave the one I love. If we got arrested, we wouldn't see each other for who knows how long, maybe forever. I can't risk that... I'll make sure to protect you all if needed. I'm sorry for everything.
I'll always be watching.
- Love, Reese 'Angel' Hanzai"
After reading the note, the adults looked at each other.
On the roof a house near, Angel was watching. Suddenly, they turned their attention to her. She bit her lip and backed away slightly. As the awkward moment passed, Zander hugged her from behind.
"You can always leave and live a normal life with them, Reese," he told her.
"I can't... We revealed our faces and I could never leave you alone; you'd do something stupid again."
"I guess you have a point," he chuckled, "ready to go back?"
"Yeah..." Reese nodded and with one last glance at the family they left.
—
And that's it! I've discovered a lot of interesting ideas with these versions of characters and I like them.
There are so many references to various media, the poster is exactly the same as the Team Rocket wanted poster in Pokémon episode 2, Sheer is nicknamed 'Hasami' which is how the kunoichi called her in Japanese since she messed up her actual name Mihasa due to the amnesia, Reese or Angel in this story doesn't kill but rather shoots people in the knees just like John Reese from Person of Interest.
I just had a bunch of fun making this story and I hope you enjoyed it!
