Her mama always told her not to play with fire. It's warm and comforting, inviting, and you can cuddle up near it and it'll make you feel so good. If you get too close though, you'll get burnt. It will hurt and it will make you cry. That's why her mama always told her never to play with fire. It's all nice and warm until suddenly, without warning, it becomes dangerous. It will hurt you, even kill you.

Simon is fire, and Kaylee knows it, but she can't resist. She gets close to him and she feels so warm and comfortable. It feels good to be near Simon, even though she knows how dangerous he can be. Sometimes…sometimes when she gets near him he's so lovely to her. Makes her feel…so special.

I just said that you're pretty. Even when you're covered in... engine grease, you're... No, especially, especially when you're covered in engine grease.

But then she get's too near…and he'll burn her.

I'd never…not with Kaylee!

And she knows that was only a small, small wound, like touching the very tip of the fire…and what he said about Serenity…he was danger. Fires might seem innocent, harmless, but sometimes they'll flare up and they'll hurt people. Not little small wounds on the tip of your finger, no. They'll hurt. They'll hurt bad.

And River, she is fire too, makes Simon look like a little flame at the end of a candle. Kaylee can't understand River. She's not even sure she likes River. But where Simon goes, River goes and if Kaylee wants to play with Simon, she plays with River too. The ultimate game of danger.

Her mama always told her not to play with fire, but somewhere Kaylee knows, and her mama must have known too, that once you start playing with fire, you can't stop until either you tame it, or it kills you. So Kaylee plays with fire.

And she's loving it.
