An examination of Cho Chang's mental state.

Polarity

After the war, Cho misplaced herself, becoming muddled, confused, jumping from highs to lows to back again. Perhaps it was the side-effect of some of the nastier hexes she didn't quite dodge, maybe she was never quite stable to begin with. Either which way, she cracked.

She sat cross-legged in a sprawling, idyllic field, lost in reverie. Her dark hair fell across her nearly bare shoulders. The sun shone warmly and she simply thought. There was something about being solitary that just strikes the heart. And it rang, rang louder and truer than anywhere else, nothing around to stifle the sounds. Her heart sang and cried, the emotions pouring out, transforming into a chorus that pierced the sky. She stared at the heavens, eclipsed by the sheer unfathomable size of the universe. Somehow, today, her insignificance did not bring about ennui; it called upon a childish sense of wonder instead. To be so small, but so noteworthy... What an accomplishment. She was lovely and loved and loving. What more could one ask for? For once, there was no one to convince her of otherwise. Her toes dug into the cool soil and she tilted her head back, allowing the cornflower blue to fully encompass her vision, appearing brighter than it ever had before. She breathed in deeply and absorbed the moment, more content than she had ever imagined was possible. This was happiness, bliss, perfection.

Then, of course, the moment passed. The world was filled once again infinite disappointments, as far from perfect as imaginable. This sudden shift was so shocking that she couldn't process it. Her mind was suddenly too crowded, too heavy, too contrary. A war raged inside her mind, the different facets of her subconscious fighting for domination. Reality versus idealism. Dissatisfaction versus ecstasy. Humanity versus something purer. Falling into a crumpled heap on the ground, she sobbed, attempting to release the agony, the pain that was just inside her. The uncertainties were shredding her core. Her shoulders shuddered as she gasped for air, her face soaked with tears. She had glimpsed a destination so pure and genuine, but was, once again, hopelessly lost.

For the time being.

AN: I've never really written anything this abstract before and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. Reviews would be lovely!
