My characters have to suffer a lot. I like them rough at the edges. Of course, I want them to be happy but - like in real life - it's a stony path. Like John Lennon once said: life happens while you're busy making other plans. I like my characters multi layered. If you prefer stories like ... and they live happily ever after ... I'm definitely not your go to author. That doesn't mean I'm absolutely against HEs. In my stories, there's, most of the time, a price to pay for being happy, or a sacrifice to make. Nothing's for free, nothing's granted. Sometimes, my muse takes a break from all the bitterness and decides to inspire me with lots of fun and laughter.
