This is where we started, is what you think, as you stare down at the old photo you found as you rummaged through the last suitcase, ready to go—ready to escape, to start new. Because that’s exactly what you need. A million thoughts whiz through your head as every detail penetrates your thinking. It brings back so many things that it hurts, but you can’t bear to look away or distract yourself.

Ha, as if you could.

To put it as close to perfection, Mother Nature had claimed her for her own. Hair whipped around by the wind in a way that didn’t mess it around like how Alicia used to complain nasally when you rolled down the window. Her skin was sun-kissed, and every part of her glows.

But when your eyes finally force themselves to look in her face, right in those eyes, your heart ricochets right into your throat. Because they look right back at you just like they used to and it’s almost more than you can bear as those orbs summon back memories you swore you’d forget.
