![]() Author has written 1 story for Yu-Gi-Oh GX. Name: My real name seems to be a bit of a mouthful for English-speakers. If you need a convenient name to call me by, Aea will do fine. Gender: If you can't tell, it really doesn't matter does it? Fandoms: Too many to list. In writing, I chiefly indulge in Yu-gi-oh!, also dabbling in Pokémon, and I'm an active Touhou gamer, though any fanfiction in that canon just seems off to me. Grew up on Sonic, Warcraft, Starcraft, Final Fantasy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Had a passing interest in Naruto and Bleach, later developed lasting ones for Tsukihime, K-On!, Lucky Star, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, Umineko no Naku Koro Ni, Azumanga Daioh and Rozen Maiden among others. I've got a whole bunch of less known fandoms I also enjoy, but I'd be unlikely to look up or write fanfiction for them, so that's a story for another time. Favorite Authors: Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Iain M. Banks, Ursula Le Guin, Stanislaw Lem and Zadie Smith, just off the top of my head. Likes: Innovative plot and character concepts, fresh angles on old ideas, philosophical musings, good mythology references, comedy that's actually funny, romance that isn't a forced contrivance or sexual fantasy, GAR done right, antagonists who are actually a legitimate threat, protagonists I can care about, clichés played well, and authors who genuinely put love and effort into what they do. There are plenty of other things obviously, but above all, I like to see authors write for the sake of what they're writing; not to boost their own ego or preach opinions on shipping or other trivialities. Pet Peeves: Plagiarism and all kinds of dishonesty - both academic and otherwise - Mary-Sues and Gary-Stus, pompous authors, rabid flamer fanboys, blandness, bad spelling and grammar, sloppy writing, philosophy fail, contrived logic, people confusing love with lust or angst with maturity, canon rape, and bastardized mythology. Just to list some of the main ones. Above all, I resent authors and fanboys who start needless fights and drama over a simple difference in tastes. Feuding over the internet is about the most pointless thing you can waste your time on, really. Location: Northern hemisphere. Self-intro: Hiya. I'm Aea, a university student in my early twenties and a reader, writer and reviewer of fanfiction in my free time. I usually stick to forum fanfic sections as the range of fics available is more manageable and I tend to know the authors better, but I'm hoping to become active here as well. My primary focus in university is on language studies (English specifically) so if I slip into speaking in obscure technical terms, just shoot me a PM and ask me to clarify. I review because I want to help fellow authors out, and that obviously won't work if we aren't speaking the same language. I also dabble in mythology, philosophy and cognitive science out of personal interest. I'm an avid reader, primarily of fiction, a gamer (with a particular emphasis on retrogaming, RPGs, strategy games, and the Touhou Project games) and a solver of various kinds of puzzles and brainteasers, particularly Sudoku. I also spend far too much time playing Yu-gi-oh!, though always in a virtual game as I don't have nearly the excess income necessary to keep buying the cards. I live in a good country, I have a position at a respectable university, I have a loving family in real life and another one on the internet (long, personal story that) and a sweet, loving boyfriend. So in short, life is good in all the ways that really matter, and I think that if more people stopped to really think on it they would find out that that last sentiment really applies to them too. I have been told many times over that I am a scary person to deal with, but if you just deal with me honestly and don't stoop to flame wars we should be just fine and dandy. I'm most likely willing to respond to PMs, talk with strangers, and drop your fic a review if it's in a fandom I work with and asking about any of these things certainly won't offend me. If for whatever reason you really can't stand me though, I'm perfectly fine with being ignored and ignoring you in return; the internet is a big place and if you stop to think about it there's really no reason you should have to waste your time on someone you don't like to waste it on. My policy on reviewing (IF YOU FEEL I JUST INSULTED YOUR FIC AND/OR YOU BY ASSOCIATION, READ THIS): I firmly believe that a reviewer should always give their honest impressions and opinions on any piece of writing they are reviewing, whether or not they enjoyed it, and indeed, sometimes you can enjoy writing even when it's technically speaking bad. I want anyone reviewing my writing to trust that I can take their honest, uncensored opinion about my work without dissolving into the kind of drama carousel that is so regrettably common among fanfic authors and I like to think no less of the maturity of any author I review. My views on your fanfic are just that, my views on your fanfic. They are not, and should never be taken as, my opinions about you as a person. I review the writing, the words that I see in front of me on the screen; that is it. A negative review on your fic doesn't mean I think you're a bad person, just as a positive one doesn't mean I think of you as a good person. When I review a fanfic, I review that fic; no more and no less. Furthermore, I do not regard myself as, nor should you think of me as, an infallible authority. I review fanfiction as a hobbyist, I like to think of myself as a fairly well informed hobbyist, mind you, but I'm a hobbyist all the same. You don't have to follow all of my suggestions or even listen to any of them and I won't take offense if you decide not to. If you did not like my review and do not want to hear more from me (for whatever reason), just PM and ask me not to review the fic further. That's all there is to it and I will be fine with that; there are plenty of fics to work with and I have no desire to waste my time on just making you miserable. If you think I was simply unclear in my review or you feel I made a mistake with it, just PM me and ask. I'm not above being proven wrong. By that same token, you don't need to hold back when you review any of my work. I'm not so insecure as to need you to sugarcoat things for me and I'm not going to cry and commit suicide if you say you didn't like my fic, but if you find something you feel is wrong I'd really appreciate it if you took the time to explain it to me in more detail. The reason I put my fanfiction on the internet, above all, is to get feedback from other people and hopefully improve as an author. Any help you can provide with that is much appreciated. Currently working on: NOTE: I am busy with university at the moment. Writing work is slowly being done behind the scenes, but concrete updates are unlikely to be seen until the holidays as several aspects of my original plans are under heavy revision. My thanks to everyone who has commented thus far and hope this will all be worth the wait. A Duelist's Bushido (YGO-GX) An alternative canon fic rooted in the time a generation after the events of Yu-gi-oh! GX. This started out as a spur of the moment tension release and has since grown into my first attempt at focused writing work. In this fic, I attempt to take an Academia fanfic setup riddled with all of the big clichés in the genre, then slowly turn them on their heads and hopefully we'll end up with something well outside the traditional mold when all is said and done. This is my first time attempting anything on this scale and I am mostly learning as I go, so any and all feedback and improvement suggestions are much appreciated. Currently Proofreading: Yu-gi-oh! Burning Red (YGO-5D's) Author: ScarletWeatherman Seeing as how you're on this page, odds are good you are already familiar with this fanfic as well, but on the off chance that you are a fan of Yu-gi-oh! and didn't know about it...what are you waiting for? Go read it. Right now. Burning Red has all you need for enjoyable, shounen-style fiction: cool imagery, gratuitous amounts of GAR, well-coordinated and varied duels, a likable cast that has personalities rather than just assigned quirks, well paced plot development, and a dash of supernatural mystery. Above all though, it's a very well written fanfic written with a very distinct sense of humor and with an air that says it's okay to laugh and take it easy. Definitely the best ongoing YGO fic that I've had the pleasure of reading on this site. |
