Author has written 8 stories for Touhou Project, Puella Magi Madoka Magica/魔法少女まどか★マギカ, El Cazador de la Bruja, and Noir. Fry, Doc Fry, that weird short guy with the hair and glasses: I'm likely known by many descriptors. Feel free to call me what you wish. I mostly write (or attempt to write) absurdist comedies with tinges of seriousness. Whether or not I succeed is up to the reading public to decide. I also like to write serious stories that are heavily influenced by post-modernism, and these stories usually are an excuse to examine a character from multiple points of view. Expect mindscrew in such stories. Favored Series (since it would be impossible to list favorites for me): AnimeManga (plus adaptations of visual novels) Steins;Gate (my pick for best anime of 2011-2012. The movie was kinda weird, though... what's with anime movies and being weird?) The works of Imaishi Hiroyuki: Dead Leaves, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, and basically everything else he's done. (Never has any director before embodied action in animation in such a way) The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi (the novels are pretty good. So was the first anime and the movie. KyoAni pretty much shot themselves in the foot with season 2, though. And Tanigawa, WHY U TAKING SO LONG TO WRITE CONTINUATION???) Code Geass (World of Ham! And loyalty! And narm! Yet I love it so...) Baccano! (essentially, Highlander IN THE PROHIBITION ERA! English dub vastly superior, as with Cowboy Bebop and The Big O, all three series of which draw heavily form the 1920s-1940s in aesthetics and have jazz-heavy soundtracks. Coincidence?) Cowboy Bebop (Obligatory classic. Still have to get around to seeing every episode, though what I've seen I have liked a lot) Puella Magi Madoka Magica (essentially, Evangelion as a magical girl series. With a bittersweet ending that actually makes sense. Rebellion, however... I'm not sure how I feel about it. I don't hate it, though) Sayonara, Zetsubou-sensei! (a vicious lampoooning of everything ever. And, who-boy, THAT ENDING) Bobobo bo-Bobobo (I don't know why, I just love it so much) Dragonball (more the earlier half than what's regarded as Z, but I like Z as well) Serial Experiments Lain (one of my all-time favorites. I actually understand the plot! Kinda. Sorta. Maybe...) The Big O! (the first anime that I was ever a major fan of besides Pokemon) Neon Genesis Evangelion [(2deep4u. Naw, not really. Pretty easy to understand once you've read the supplementary material. Also, shipping Eva characters makes me feel awkward. I like Shinji, though (then again, I like Miki Sayaka also, and the two are both rather hated by the western fanbase for the same reasons, so I don't know what to say about that...)] Fuan no Tane (Holy shit, what the fuck did I just read? And why am I so unnerved...) The works of Junji Itou: Uzumaki, Gyo!!, The Enigma of Amegahara Fault (the master of Japanese horror comics. You will never see spirals the same ever gaian after Junji Itou. For extra fun, watch Gurren Lagann before/after reading Uzumaki) The movies of Hayao Miyazaki (genius) The Girls with Guns trilogy: Noir, Madlax, El Cazador de la Bruja (vaguely-homosexual duo against criminal organizations. Results may vary) Kino's Journey (anthropology and sociology: the anime/novel series) FLCL (my favorite series ever) Monster (one of two manga I ever marathoned in a 24-hour time period) I"s (the other manga I only ever marathoned. Never have I seen such an ecchi series that somehow was able to realistically portray love so well) Pokemon (the first few seasons are freaking awesome, cheesy 4kids dub and all. In fact, it's because the dub is so damn cheesy yet lovable that I like it so much) Yu-Gi-Oh! (same reasons as the above. Also, 5Ds is surprisingly good, even for a series that's essentially playing a children's card game ON MOTORCYCLES) Nana no Banana (I don't know why, I just love the concept of this series so much) Series I no longer actively follow yet still feel a soft-spot for: Naruto (I am really fond of the series pre-time skip. I also like some of the post-timeskip stuff. Ultimately, what I like most about the series are the ideas and themes, which I feel the series wastes the potential of by the large) Inuyasha (my introduction to anime and manga outside of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!. like with Naruto, I largely like the ideas and themes of the series rather than the series itself, though I must admit that this series gave me the appreciation I have for folklore and mythology. Also, I am an unrepentant Kikyou fanboy and no matter what I think of the series, I shall always ship Miroku x Sango) Literature Too many authors and books to count, but I'll list a few all-time faves: The works of Howard Philips Lovecraft (Cthulhu Fhtagn! Though, I actually like Yog-Sothoth better.) Robert Howard (the Father of Heroic Fantasy. Conan the Cimmerian and his ilk owe a lot to Howard). Clark Ashton Smith (have you noticed a theme?) The works of Douglas Adams (Life, the Universe, and Everything is my favorite Hitchhiker book. I also feel that the Dirk Gently series is sadly under-read.) All of the Folklorists who have compiled the mythologies, beliefs, and folklore of countless cultures over the centuries. To you our culture holds a great debt. J. K. Rowling (I have yet to finish the Harry Potter series, but I by and large like it. The fans are a bit insane, though...) J.R.R. Tolkien (the one that made studying mythology and folklore serious. Also, the father of modern fantasy. THE POWER OF LINGUISTICS COMPELS YOU) Edgar Allen Poe (all of his stuff, especially his comedies. There is much more to Poe than gloom and doom) Mark Twain/Samuel Clemens (I just like his stuff. Also, dry wit ahoy!) Live-Action I don't watch much live-action stuff, to be honest. However, I do like Xena, Doctor Who, and was a big fan of The Finder before it was cut short. I also like The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., Star Trek (The Original Series mostly), and The Twilight Zone. Also, who can not like at least partially Who's Line is it, Anyway? Movies Too many to count. However, The works of Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles being one of my favorite movies ever) The Disney Animated Canon (faves being The Lion King, Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Mulan, Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Frozen) The Die Hard series (1-3 are great, 4 was kinda eeehhhh, 5 was terrible and should be ignored entirely) The works of Don Bluth (I am one of the few people that actually genuinely like his more weirder stuff. Also, Titan A.E. is a sadly-overlooked classic) The road of El Dorado (one of my favorite movies ever. Sadly a victim of the sub-par box office) The Fifth Element (can't say enough of how much I love this movie) The Evil Dead Series (first one wasn't too great, but yet highly influenced the horror genre all the same. Evil Dead 2 was good, and of course, Army of Darkness manages to knock the previous two out of the water) Kill Bill (every movie ever made in two movies with a shit-ton of violence) Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (haven't seen this movie in a while, but I loved it) Star Wars (mostly the original trilogy, but I like aspects of the prequels. Heaven help us that sequels are being made now...) Video Games The Age of Empires series [this includes Age of Mythology as well. Great RTS games that awakened my love of mythology and folklore (along with Inuyasha, as mentioned above) and sucked me into video gaming] The Total War Series (not so much the newer ones, but Medieval and Rome shall forever be classics) Pokemon (I love every main Pokemon game, and I love every single Pokemon. To pick a favorite is sacrilege) Fallout (I like the classic turn-based games and the console games. The first game and New Vegas are the favorite, though) Bioshock The Games of Valve (though mostly Half-Life and Portal. I would play Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead, but I have nobody to play with TT_TT) Dawn of War (introduced me to Warhammer 40,000, which is a good thing. Some of the best AND worse voice acting ever, which makes it endearing) Clocktower (mostly the first game that wasn't released state-side. Don't cry, Jennifer) Spyro the Dragon (my first console game ever was the first Spyro game. How I love it, and how I don't really like yet appreciate the qualities of the new series...) Crash Bandicoot (similar story to above) Phoenix Wright (some of the most endearing characters ever in a video game series) Etrian Odyssey (What do you MEAN you forgot the Warp-Wire?) Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series (I love the alignment system. Also, the Persona games have feels to the max. And Strange Journey is great in so many different ways) Animation in General Way too many examples (my childhood can be summarized as cartoons and Pokemon) Favorites: The DCAU (Batman the Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, and Justice League deserve all of their popularity and praise) Ed, Ed'd n' Eddy (one of my favorite cartoons ever. So absurd, so funny... and with the movie, so very, very sad) Dexter's Laboratory (FOR SCIENCE! the show) Star Wars: Clone Wars (the one done by the guys who made Samurai Jack, not the CGi one. However, my opinion has improved of late of the latter) Samurai Jack (one of the best cartoons ever. So many styles, so many themes) Teen Titans (I just love how schizophrenic the show was, how easily it go from wacky absurdist comedy to dead-serious action-drama in a second) The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (have I mentioned how much I love the strange mixture of horror and comedy?) Hey, Arnold! (damn, I miss this show. Remember when cartoons in the 90s used to have morals to the story and the characters were well-developed?) Rocko's Modern Life (damn, I love how insanely weird the Australians can be) Cow and Chicken (what the fuck did I just watch?!) Other A metric-plook-ton of music of various genres and styles (though especially metal, classic rock, 80s music, experimental music, early 20th century music, and orchestral music. Favorite musicians/composers/bands include Yuki Kajiura, Sagisu Shiro, Ronnie James Dio, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa (and the Mothers of Invention), Henry Cow (largely with their team-up with Slapp Happy), Koenji Hyakkei, The Beatles, The Ink Spots, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Igor Stravinsky, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Modest Mussorgsky, Yoko Kanno, Wendy Carlos, and aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh TOO MANY) Warhammer 40,000 (Books, Tabletop Game, Video Games, RPGs, all are great, but the tabletop is incredibly expensive so I don't really play it. The movies kind of suck, but can be enjoyed) I will likely add more to this list later. I think. Possibly. Though I do not consider myself an active shipper, there are a number of fictional relationships I like the idea of. A list is given below, as, like with the majority of fanfiction, the ships are a large part of what I write: Okabe Rintarou x Makise Kurisu (steins;gate) Note: I am notoriously a canon-shipper. Having such a great relationship be canon just makes shipping these two all the easier. Nadie x Ellis Schneider (El Cazador de la Bruja) Note: I love this. Even though it's not explicitly stated in the show, its pretty damn obvious by the end. Kaname Madoka x Akemi Homura (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) Note: Naked Lesbian Space Hugs. The climax of the Rebellion story. What more do you need to know? Though Rebellion casts quite a shadow on this ship, to be certain... (good thing that it's technically an alternate storyline and not the "official" continuation). Hijiri Byakuren x Toyosatomimi no Miko (Touhou Project) Note: This, like nearly all Touhou ships, is non-canon. I just find the concept of two religious arch-rivals in a such a relationship hilarious. Yakumo Yukari x Saigyuoji Yuyuko (Touhou Project) Note: This one is a bit more serious, and is as close to a "canon" ship that Touhou Project has ever really gotten to (part of the reason why so many ships exist for this series is the complete absence of official pairings). Lawrence Kraft x Holo (Spice and Wolf) Note: Hooray for clueless yet well-meaning men and tsundere wolf goddesses! Suzumiya Haruhi x Kyon x Nagato Yuki (Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi): Note: I ship these three in a slightly different way than most; since I believe that someone can love two people exactly the same, but in different ways. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Kirika Yuumera x Mireille Bouquet (Noir) Note: Like with El Cazador de la Bruja, this one isn't so much official yet highly implied. Miroku x Sango (Inuyasha) Note: One of the parts of the series that I actually fully enjoy. It's a shame that it has to be surrounded by so much natter... |
