Age: Early twenties Sex: Male Occupation: College student (Ethnolinguistics) Country: Poland Fandoms: Mostly anime, manga and other sources from the country of the rising sun (Touhou, visual novels). I have a deep liking for the animation industry in general. A good book is a good book, too, although those rarely gather a large enough following to make a splash in the fanfiction world (Potter excluded). Comments: Very much welcome. This includes criticism, as harsh as it has to be. When I review other people's stories, I often try to list one thing that I liked the most and one that could use the most work. Also, there have been times when readers' ideas became a source of inspiration for me, so don't be afraid to share more general thoughts. Requests: Welcome. But watch out, your idea may end up frighteningly deformed. You have been warned : ). Have fun reading! ~ Cytrus Poll results: Poll 1: Do you support novel-only characters appearing in Suzumiya Haruhi fics? 1 I support them (they are an important part of canon) 12 » 80/100 2 I'm neutral 3 » 20/100 3 I'm against them (not everybody knows them) 0 » 0/100 Unique Voters: 15 Comment: When a poll has this kind of one-sided result, one usually looks for a source of bias. This is an easy case - people coming here most likely read one of my SHnY fics. Since all of them make use of the novels, most of the people who got through them have knowledge about novel characters anyway, making the question redundant. The fact remains that nobody oposes a practice which may alienate a part of the readership. Then again, a personal question warrants a personal answer, so no surprise there. Poll 2: Fanfiction of what length will you read? 1 Length is not a factor for me when choosing what to read 3 » 75/100 2 1500-5000 words 1 » 25/100 3 Up to 200 words 0 » 0 4 200-1500 words 0 » 0 5 5000-15000 words 0 » 0 6 15000-50000 words 0 » 0 7 50000 words and more 0 » 0 Unique Voters: 4 Comment: Not only is this a very general poll, the FF net shuffling system also makes it rather unfriendly. Both are probably reasons for the low turnout. As for the results - most voters claimed not to take into account length when deciding what to read. Does that also hold true when picking up a real book? Is it easy to read novel-length books on a PC screen? Do we all have the computer time needed to read longer works? Can very short fanfiction leave a proper impression on the reader? Those are some of the questions that came to mind when I saw the result. One thing is sure - voters think there are more important factors than length when choosing what to read. Poll 3:For you, what is the most important factor when deciding what to read? 1 Pairing(s) 25 » 22/100 2 Summary 22 » 20/100 3 Finished Story/Regular Updates 15 » 13/100 4 Length 13 » 11/100 5 Spotlight Character(s) 11 » 10/100 6 Genre 8 » 7/100 7 Formatting 8 » 7/100 8 Author 4 » 3/100 9 Rating 3 » 2/100 Unique Voters: 42 Comment: This was a very long-standing poll. Top two places go to pairings and summary, which means the summaries do what they're supposed to. Pairings, on the other hand, are something so deeply ingrained in fanfiction tradition that readers might expect those to be listed outright, apparently even if romance is not the main focus of a story (the genre). It's worth noting here that about sixty per cent of the stories on this site belong in the romance category. The third spot shows that we do not like to have our time and emotional investment wasted on stories that die somewhere in the middle of things, which is quite understandable. Also noteworthy is the low position of the author on the list, completely at odds with how it looks in published fiction. The poor result doesn't agree with the popularity of the author alert function on the site, though. Fics pending: (Due to the number of ongoing projects at the moment, I have a temporary poll to see what you want me to give top priority to. You can go see it above.) Scarlet Septette: Wings Enough for the Two of Us (planned) / Touhou - The second part of Scarlet Septette, detailing the beginning of the partnership which would one day change the life of Remilia Scarlet, but had first to help two people to rise from shadows of their past. Wavecleaver (first half ready and edited, second planned) / Touhou - When the greatest cherry blossom was near full bloom, Youmu failed her mistress. Her duty does not end. Her loyalty does not end. And yet, how hard will it be to raise her swords once more and cut through the confusion within her heart? (hiatus) |
