Reviews for Force Bond: Dentist
AraelDranoth chapter 1 . 1/19
An interesting one shot to say the least. I enjoyed it despite the incredulity of the scenario.
SilhouetteInWords chapter 1 . 12/16/2019
Hi
This is likely to be a long, and fairly critical review of your entire Force Bond series, so I'd like to begin by clarifying that I think your work is amazing, and in fact is the best of the Vader-Raises-Luke genre by a significant margin. I'm extremely grateful to you for writing it and making it available for people like me to read. I should also add that I have never felt any particular need to review a bad fanfiction. It is only exceptional work which manages to illicit in me the desire to spend extremely long comments complaining about how the characters didn't behave the way I think they should have.
I should also take this moment to mention that I've been too terrified that Vader is going to die or something else horrible is going to happen, to actually finish the series, so I am writing from a not entirely informed position.

Fundamentally, my criticism is that both Luke and Vader are just a bit too sweet and innocent. On Vader's part, people who spend their lives killing and torturing people, don't then come home and keep their cool while their son yells at them, runs away from home, sneak onto a bounty hunters ship, etc. I'm not sure that Vader would ever actually use corporal punishment on Luke, as I think that events with Padme have left a impression strong enough to deter him from ever disciplining Luke physically, but the fact that there is no screaming, nothing is ever broken, and Luke is never really punished for anything seems a bit unrealistic to me. It could go either way...
However Luke's character takes it to a whole new level. Of course, in the films he is portrayed as incredibly naïve and really quite dense. He is, in sort order, convinced that his family - with whom he did not seem to have a great relationship, but I'll get to that - have been killed by the empire, and is then dragged off by the same people who abducted him as a child to commit patricide in order to win them their war, a war, I might add, that he know virtually nothing about.
So yes, Luke isn't very smart, has no particular beliefs or opinions of his own, and is propelled through life by little more then a love of flying and a desire for 'adventure'; in the films.
However the environment we live in has a noticeable effect on our perceptions and personality. Yes, Luke would probably arrive on Coruscant just about literate with his head full of x-wings, but he goes to a school full of the children of high ranking military personal and politicians. I have a great deal of trouble believing he would retain his naivety under those circumstances. Human beings have an innate desire to fit in. Surely, Luke would want to live up to the people around him, either to attend one of the academies to join the military, get into politics in the senate, become a governor or a Moff, or to become a Sith.
Yes, young children are generally quite happy to waste their time playing video games etc. but teenagers want to fit into their social group. The people, especially the boys, around Luke, have money to burn, lots of expensive toys, virtual diplomatic immunity for whenever they want to get into a speeder accident, break into a store, and if we're being honest, probably rape a girl or have someone they don't like beaten up or killed. There is NO WAY that Luke is not going to notice that this is the norm around him, and considering that his father also enjoy breaking traffic laws, sweating credits, and killing people who annoy him, I have a great deal of trouble with the idea that Luke wouldn't eventually adjust to the idea that the upper class simply has a right to live this way.
However this brings me to another important point; it seems highly ridiculous that Luke would so effectively separate the man who kills anyone who fails him, from the man with whom he eats dinner. Luke has to know that his father has incredibly exacting standards that he applies to everyone else, so what exactly is his opinion on how those standards apply to him?
It seems to me that he'd likely oscillate two different opinions depending on his mood and age; firstly, it could simply be that standards of achievement and behaviour don't apply to him. Everyone else has to be perfect but he can just do whatever he wants because he's Vader's son. However this perception of his father's opinion of him would likely require a lot more spoiling then Vader actually does, so I don't think is likely that such an idea would last, if it ever took form.
What I think is a far more probable conclusion, and one highly compatible with a teenage mindset, is that he is simply vastly inferior to everyone else his father knows. Other boys he goes to school with are being shuttled off into special academies, and are alternately spoiled and beaten up by their fathers on a weekly basis - because there is no chance that all the other men who spend their lives killing people and abusing their positions are making level headed fathers either - and he is not. His peers, who are made both uncomfortable and jealous by his position as Vader's son, have likely brought to his attention on multiple occasions, that he is a 'peasant'; he has an accent for Force sake, he is noticeably different to everyone else at his school. And if they all think that make's him inferior, and his father doesn't seem to think he's worth it, why shouldn't it be because his father believe this too? It would certainly explain why there are no particular plans being made for his future - as evidenced in Luke eyes by the fact that he is not being trained or educated for any particular field of employment - and why his father doesn't seem to think it's worth applying the same standards of achievement to him, that he applies to the rest of the galaxy. The fact that Vader leaves Luke behind periodically would likely contribute to this idea of Luke's worthlessness in his father's eyes.
I would like to close with a few parting comments.
Firstly; the emperor. What does he want? What does he enjoy? What is he trying to achieve? I really feel like this character needs to be fleshed out a bit more.
Secondly, your can't sell a form of government to an entire galaxy if you can't even sell it to one teenaged boy. The way the empire operates is obviously explained to the vast majority of the galaxy in such a way that only a small minority have a problem with it. There is no way that they'd have this much trouble explaining to Luke that what was going on was, if not necessarily right, then at least in the best interests of the majority.
Thirdly, Having super powers is really, really cool. Why isn't Luke more interested in this? Why aren't his friends?
Fourthly, why aren't the other children at his school making more of an effort to befriend him? They're politicians children, that have to know what being Vader's son's friend could mean for them. For that matter, their parents have to know what having a child who is friends with Vader's son could mean for THEM.
Fifthly, Luke's aunt an uncle were willingly cooperating with the abduction of the son of a high ranking government official at great personal risk. They were either doing this out of fierce sense of loyalty to the rebellion, or because they were being threatened. Neither of these is a particular strong basis for a loving relationship with Luke, as we see in the films. It is therefor unreasonable to assume that Luke had a perfect childhood, even if they were reasonable enough to know rationally that nothing that was going on was his fault.
Lastly, they have ways NOW that they could help Vader medically. Someone get this man several organ transplants, stat! Growing back limbs/attaching pre-grown limbs can be a lot more difficult, as while you can in theory do it with stem cells, getting the nerves and muscles reattached can be a bitch. However they clearly got SOMETHING attached to Vader's nerves a muscles because he is moving his robotic limbs just fine. It's possible that this is just a different universe and they haven't done much in the way if stem cell research in this civilisation. It is also entirely plausible that Vader might not look into it because he doesn't want to hope etc. and just wants to move on, and there are several reasons the Emperor might not do it but he's need more character before he can be assigned one. However we always want to help the people we love, especially when they are in pain, so why isn't Luke looking into ways to help his father?
That's everything that was on my mind just now. There may be more later...
Once again, please don't overlook that fact that you are an amazing writer and have done something incredible for everyone while reading this. We love you.

Your stories always manage to blend humor and drama so well. I like that Vader gets free tickets to all sporting events and that he slays Luke's nightmares.

Another funny story from you.

I won't lie...Luke annoys me sometimes. I can't really sympathize with him, because I was never really scared of the dentist. They were all nice.

The epilogue was all sorts of awesome, though. Darth Dentist was no match. :)
