Monthly Ritual
His red eyes shone with mirth. He was standing atop one of the buildings, watching. Waiting.
He heard a scream, and his lips twisted in a smirk, his fangs gleaming in the moonlight.
It didn't take him long to find the source of the scream. A man cornering a poor, defenceless woman in an alleyway. How typical.
Oh look, he has a knife.
He swooped in a few metres away from the man. He was silent as the night, so neither party noticed him.
Well, they would soon.
In a single leap, he was at the man's throat, his fangs piercing skin. Two screams echoed in the night, one of fear, the other fear mixed with pain.
And he noticed that the woman made the move to run away, before she was attacked next.
The man in his grip continued to struggle as the red essence of his life flowed down the other's throat. After a few moments, the movements became sluggish, and finally stopped.
He drank until there was nothing left to drink. When he was finished, he let the body fall to the ground.
"A cowardly man, wouldn't you say?"
His red eyes turned to look behind him, where blue and green eyes waited to greet him. The one with green eyes was the one that spoke.
"Quite," he agreed. "His blood wasn't that good, but necessary. The woman?"
"Her mind has been erased from the moment she strayed from her intended path," the blue eyes said. "She will never know about this."
"Come," green eyes said. "I took the liberty of preparing a grave at the cemetery. I also modified the records, in case anyone becomes suspicious."
"Good," red eyes said. "At least Germany can't complain. I did him a favour."
…
The next morning at the world meeting, everything was chaos as usual. But Romania was pleased with himself.
Of course, when America made the suggestion that Romania could be a vampire, he calmly pointed out that, if he was a vampire, he wouldn't be out during daytime. And England came to his defence.
Only England and Norway knew the truth. That Romania was a vampire. But because he was a nation, the normal rules for vampires didn't apply to him. He could walk in the sunlight. He could enter a home without being invited in. And holy objects had no effect on him.
He just needed to completely drain a human of blood, and it usually lasted a month. Just in time for the monthly world meetings.
England and Norway would usually handle damage control. Dealing with witnesses and disposing of the evidence. He used to do it himself, but it drained him. He already used enough magic to keep the other nations ignorant. He knew that many other nations would use the opportunity to take advantage of him. England and Norway, being magical nations themselves, could be trusted in keeping the secret.
Even though vampires were stronger, they could easily submit to large numbers if they are all intent on opposing them. And if the entire world were to team up against him, well…
So he would continue with the monthly ritual, in order to protect his country. He would keep the other nations ignorant. And he would not succumb to the weaknesses associated with being a vampire.
